CURTIS Sironen is on a mission to play Wests Tigers star Benji Marshall out of his No.6 jersey, saying he isn't content with being a stopgap solution.

Gun teenager Sironen will run out at pivot for the second straight game against Brisbane on Saturday, with Marshall (toe) still sidelined by injury.

With veteran Braith Anasta (groin) also unavailable, Tim Moltzen has been switched to halfback with talented youngster James Tedesco slipping into his No.1 jersey.

But Sironen isn't content with a temporary place in coach Mick Potter's revamped side - with Marshall and Anasta expected to be sidelined for at least the next fortnight.

"I'm not just here to hang around till they come back,'' Sironen said.

"I'm looking to cement a spot - be it in the halves or wherever Mick wants to play me.

"I'll put my hand up again.

"Realistically, I have to try and play them out of position.

"There's a lot of competition for spots in the halves here, which is good. It makes you have to perform every week.

"I'm happy to be playing in the No.6, it's where I feel most comfortable at the moment.''

Sironen, the son of former Balmain Tigers great Paul Sironen, was riding high after an impressive performance in last round's 13-12 loss to St George Illawarra - his first NRL match this year following shoulder surgery.

"I took a bit of confidence out of the Dragons game, even though we got pipped at the post there,'' he said.

"I got an early touch, a few early runs and poked my head through a few times.

"I'm more of a ball-runner so just getting my hands on the ball and getting tackled early gives me confidence throughout the rest of the game.

"I'll be looking to do that again.''

Moltzen said he was looking forward to working with Sironen in the halves, with Potter keen for the pair to be vocal in steering the team around the park.

While the 24-year-old said he would prefer to stay at halfback, he was just out to command a spot in the team.

"I came to the club as halfback and I've sort of been thrust in and out of the position for a few years now,'' he said.

"If Teddy does a great job there (at fullback) for us and I'm going alright at halfback then hopefully not too much has to change.

"We'll just take it as it comes and hopefully I can keep a spot in the team.''

I heard him interviewed the other day, said he was happy to play backrow or even centre to stay in the team, great attitude I think.

Nothing wrong with having aspirations as long as they are realistic…. A fit benji= Marshall at 5/8... Keep dreamin Sirro

Pshh, who cares. never know! anything could happen so sirro should just keep trying and he might findhimself permanently in the halves or moved to somewhere like back row; better than just giving up cause he is not likely to shift benji outta 5/8.

Benji could move to 7, that is realistic.

I agree. Benji has gone away from his running game and unless he makes a serious effort to take the line on, I think he'll be more of a hindrance than anything. I thought we looked at our best last year with the Marshall/Sirro halves combo before injury struck.

Top attitude from the young bloke. I can understand why many dont see him as a superstar, but it this kind of attitude and confidence that allowed him to all but seemlessly slip into first grade. Self belief, hunger and a positive attitude is necessary to unleash full potential, which I still think he has up his sleeve. He has been natural and not intimidated from his first seconds in the big show, a massive compliment, and while its just a basic game he brings at present, its solid, and Im sure he has more to bring to the table.

I would prefer 78 mins a game of solid, than 2 minutes of showtime any day of the week. Bellamy would agree ( probably cry over the 2 mins).

Love the attitude, not a look at me attitude, but the give me the bloody ball, I'm gonna win this game for us attitude! If all the players had this belief, we would be like the Storm and be unstoppable. Maybe the Sironen's should have Benji around for tea and teach him about the passion, the fire, the burning to be the best. I'm sure he had it once, but haven't seen it for a long time. Good onya Curtis, love to see more of it, very similar to Brooks's passion. Maybe they should invite Miller too.

Yes that Canberra game last year was benji's most accomplished at 7 but like the rest of his game he is very I consistent at 7 plus benji has stated he wants to be a 5/8 again and recapture his running game… He just needs a good half inside him... Hopefully Moltz can be that...

I think Benji is more suited to 7 than Moltzen is. The positions are very similar though and maybe it doesn't matter. Benji also shouldn't get to state where he plays - if it is better for the team for Benji to be at 7 well then that is how it goes.

I think we definitely have increased competition for the halves - Moltzen, Miller, Benji and Sironen. Two of them are going to miss out. The question is can they fit into the team in another position.

Good on him for coming out and letting his team mates know he wants to belong… While this kid has huge talent, I feel he is still a long way off being a 5/8 at NRL Level in a team that doesnt have a creative Halfback. Curtis reminds me alot of John Wilson... Has alot of talent, but not enough flair to be a playmaker at this level.

For Sironen to remain at 5/8, we will have to adopt him as a Mateo/Bird type of 5/8 where he will be doing some hit-ups & create second phase, going to the line & passing, and be responsible for some of the kicking. For this to be a reality, our only real option is to have Benji at 7 for the next 3-4 years as Brooks is more of a Domestic Halfback and wouldnt compliment Curtis.

I agree Alexaki , I love Curtiss's attitude as well , and even though Benji has been playing busted , the stats saying that the Wests Tigers have only one 1 game from their past 8 matches wgen Benji hasn't played Is a very telling Stat indeed

How he can help makeup 2 from 9 on Saturday night

The stats aren't so great with Gallows out either. If you were a punting man, you wouldn't be on us. However, it's a great opportunity for players like Bodene, Baby Sirro and Sue to step up and make a mark.

Good to know the lad isn't a pushover. He's stating he wants to be here and that sort of spirit and desire for the game is refreshing to see.

When it comes to the tigers I dont pay any attention to stats like that; so what if melbourne have only been beaten once in 100 when they lead at half time. Lets make it 2!!!

And if we've only won 1 from 8 without benji we'll make it 2 from 8 against the broncs!! :sign:
