FORMER Giants favourite John Skandalis is making a name for himself on the coaching front.

The tough Australian prop, pictured, who was a big hit for Huddersfield in 2007 and 2008, has taken over as head coach of Wests Tigers Under 20s team.

Being handed a coaching role was always on the cards for Skandalis, who has earned legendary status at the top Australian NRL club, and Giants captain and former Tigers teammate Brett Hodgson isn’t at all surprised by the news.

“It was good to catch up with the big fella when I was back home,” said Hodgson, who took advice off Skandalis before deciding to sign for the Giants for the start of the 2009 campaign.

“He’s now the head coach of the Tigers Under 20s side and I’m sure he’ll do a great job.

“But, deep down, I think he’d still like to have stayed a bit longer at Huddersfield.

“Like me, he absolutely loved his time there – I did, in fact, move in to the house he had at Slaithwaite – and he does miss the town and the club.
