Former NSW Origin great Laurie Daley in frame for coach job

LAURIE Daley has emerged as a potential frontrunner to coach NSW next season should Ricky Stuart jump ship for Canterbury.

While speculation surrounding the Bulldogs and a likely offer to Stuart in the wake of the sacking of Kevin Moore continues to grow, NSW league officials can do nothing but sit tight and wait to see how it plays out.

NSWRL boss Geoff Carr reinterated yesterday that next year's Blues coach will have no affiliation with an NRL club.

That would automatically rule out Stuart if he links with the Dogs.

"Ricky Stuart has a two-year contract to coach the Blues and is very keen to do it again," Carr said.

"If he gets a huge offer to coach back in the NRL, something he can't knock back, then obviously we'd have to look at it. But at this stage, it's all speculation."

Carr said a possible alternative to Stuart, should he vacate the Blues job, has never been officially discussed.

"We have a coach for next year," he insisted. "It hasn't been discussed and I'm not about to speculate on it."

But well-placed sources have told The Sunday Telegraph that Daley would be among the frontrunners for the position in the event Stuart becomes unavailable.

"He'd be the first choice at this stage, depending on his work commitments and whether he could do it or not," the source said.

"His name has certainly been casually tossed around by a few people.

"The list of possible contenders is not all that long.

"Laurie's done the Country Origin job for the past three or four years and done well there. With the right people around him, he'd handle Origin in much the same way that big Mal (Meninga) has for Queensland.

**"The only difference is I don't think Laurie would be afraid to come out and say he needs some help around him."**

Well no surprises with the last comment there…

Well you could absolutely pencil in Chris Lawrence for Origin next year if Daley is coach. It'd also improve the chances of Heighington playing. Farah would be no chance, neither would Galloway. He also rates Ayshford highly and with the retirement of Gasnier, Ayshford has to have some hope if he keeps improving.

Queenslanders must be laughing their arses off. It just keeps getting better and better for them.

Daley doesn't like Galloway???

I would have thought Lawrence and Jennings were specials for the centres next year.

It's not that he doesn't rate Galloway, it's just that with Daley coaching you could consider Learoyd Lahrs, Snowden, Mannah, Brett White, Weyman, Hunt, Merrin, Kite, Perry, Douglas… all ahead of him.

Here we go again, the boys club survives, year after year of failure and this is the best NSW can come up with, we need completely new blood get rid of those associated with past failure even if it is a coach from left field, Georgalis??

Wouldn't mind Junior to be given another go, 1 series draw, 1 win (3-0) and 1 loss (2-1).

Anyway, surely there are plenty of people out there who would do a better job than Daley

Just logged on and saw this headline - bloody hell nooooo! Why can't this guy just go away? He sticks to NSW like s–t to a blanket - it stinks and you can never get it all off. He should not be allowed within 5000 miles of the NSW SOO team next year, please!!!

"To beat Queensland, we need to score more points than them."
"To break the 7th consecutive win, we need to first beat them in 2 games of football."
"I don't see Jarryd Hayne as a running fullback, I see him more as a playing fullback. If I want my fullback to run, I will choose Josh Dugan."
"I need to make sure we are selecting for the future, not just for the present." - on this one: I wish he would actually say this.

I just made those up because they're things he would say.

Its all good if he is made NSW coach for me because I don't support NSW and it would make my life that little bit more enjoyable.
