Is Man Utd v Spurs a bigger game for Carrick or De Zerbi?

Can Iraola kickstart Liverpool era with a win against Man City?

Will Arsenal move on from Brighton loss – or are stubborn Leeds a problem?

Can Chelsea end winless run against Bournemouth?

Is Newcastle clash Coventry’s biggest game of the season?

Will Hull rediscover winning formula against Everton?

Can Palace earn first home win under Sage against Glasner's Forest?

Can Ipswich continue fast start against winless Fulham?

Will Brighton maintain their pre-international break momentum against Sunderland?

West Ham United 1-1 Queens Park Rangers
EFL Championship, London Stadium, Friday 9 October 2026

Jarrod Bowen scored a second-half equaliser before having his late penalty saved as West Ham United were held to a 1-1 EFL Championship draw by Queens Park Rangers at London Stadium.

On a Friday night when the Hammers paid tribute to the late Luděk Mikloško, the game that followed was a tale of two penalties.

The vast majority of West Ham supporters have been in agreement that the absence of VAR has made football a more enjoyable spectacle this season. That number may have fallen early in the first half following the decision by referee Ruebyn Ricardo to award QPR a penalty.

Granted, the returning Tomáš Souček passed the ball straight to Paul Smyth, but the Czech got back, slid and poked the ball away from the QPR winger a yard outside the West Ham penalty area.

The visiting players did not visibly appeal for a spot-kick, but Mr Ricardo pointed at the spot. The home players looked in disbelief, then appealed vociferously, but with no VAR to intervene, the decision would not be changed.

Nicolas Madsen stepped up and rolled his penalty past fellow Dane Mads Hermansen to put the Hoops in front.

West Ham had started slowly, with Bowen’s overhead the only goal attempt of the opening 15 minutes.

Even after falling behind, with QPR sat deep and organised, the Irons struggled to create anything of note, save for Morato’s cross that Pierce Charles tipped over the crossbar.

Indeed, the visitors could have doubled their lead before half-time had Hermansen not made a plunging stop to keep out Rayan Kolli’s curler.

Head Coach Nuno Espírito Santo made two half-time changes, bringing on Edvin Austbø and Pablo in place of Kyle Walker-Peters and Souček.

Within a minute of the restart, Hermansen had to be alert to block after Kolli got a toe to Morato’s under-hit back pass.

West Ham continued to have more possession, but do very little of note with it. Instead, QPR had another half-chance when Kwame Poku’s powerful shot was blocked.

With time running short, Nuno made two more changes, bringing on Lewis Orford and Joël Piroe.

Finally, with 20 minutes to play, the Irons injected some pace into their attacking play and immediately pulled level.

Bowen won the ball back deep inside his own half, Maximilian Kilman played it forward through the lines, Piroe flicked it to Taty, who fed Bowen.
The captain’s initial shot was blocked by Ronnie Edwards, but he followed in to score at the second attempt.

With the crowd now right behind the home team, West Ham went in search of a winner. Piroe’s curler was tipped wide, Bowen fired over, Austbø fired straight at Charles and the QPR goalkeeper tipped the captain’s low shot past the post.

Then, in the 90th minute, Bowen crossed, substitute Amadou Mbengue clearly pulled Pablo’s shirt and Mr Ricardo awarded another penalty.

Charles dived low to his left, saved Bowen’s spot-kick, then leapt to his feet to push Arne Engels’ follow-up header against the underside of the crossbar before finally Piroe put the rebound over.

With that, West Ham’s chance of snatching a valuable victory had gone.
