Wellington Phoenix have made a winning start to their 20th A-League Men season, thanks to goals from Corban Piper and Riley Bidois against Melbourne Victory at Hnry Stadium.

Riley Bidois has made sure that Wellington celebrated their 20th birthday in style, after his late strike secured the Kiwi side a 2-1 win over Melbourne Victory.

Hosting the same foe they’d faced in their first-ever game back in 2007/08, the 20th A-League Men campaign in Phoenix history got off to a fine start on Sunday when Matthew Sheridan teed up Corban Piper to drive a header home just 14 minutes in.

And while Charles Nduka would level things ten minutes later, the introduction of Bidois off the bench proved pivotal, as he netted just seconds after his 77th-minute introduction to secure ‘Nix coach Chris Greenacre a winning start to his first full season in charge.

The Victory had more of the ball throughout the contest but struggled to do much with it, outshot nine to five.

Their goal came when Denis Genreau capitalised on a numerical advantage gleaned by Rafael Duran being forced off for treatment; driving into the box and, after a fortunate bounce, having the ball sit up for Nduka.

With Duran forced off soon after, his replacement Nathan Walker almost restored the lead just seconds after coming on, but his 28th-minute attempt was sent straight at Jack Duncan.

It was the first of a handful of clean looks on goal that both sides would go on to fashion, with Matthew Grimaldi spurning a chance to give the visitors the lead on the hour when he bent a left-footed effort around the post.

But just as it looked like the spoils would be shared at Hnry Stadium, Walker put the ball on a plate for Bidois with a cutback that was duly deposited into the back of the net.

Wellington will next host Central Coast, while the Victory will return home to prepare for a Melbourne derby against City next Saturday.

Bournemouth lifted themselves out of the relegation zone as goals from Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson secured their first Premier League win of the season while Sunderland's struggles continued.

Both teams began the day in the bottom three after poor starts this season on the domestic front despite winning their opening two Europa League games.

But Bournemouth boss Marco Rose got his first three points as a Premier League manager as Sunderland remain winless on the road this season and without a league victory since beating Fulham on 30 August.

Sunderland got off to a nightmare start of their own doing as defender Kevin Danso endured a disastrous17 minutes in which he helped Bournemouth to their opener and then was handed a red card for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.

Cherries striker Evanilson bullied past the former Tottenham defender in the sixth minute before crossing for Tavernier to head home into an empty net for his fourth of the season.

Then just 11 minutes later, Evanilson's strength saw him get in front of Danso and as the defender fell, he pulled down the Bournemouth forward, who was on the edge of the area and in on goal, which saw referee Craig Pawson brandish the red card.

Black Cats goalkeeper Robin Roefs did keep them in the game with some good saves as he twice denied Brazilian winger Rayan.

Adam Smith should have scored on the rebound from one of Rayan's saved efforts but Sunderland gifted Bournemouth a second just three minutes after the restart.

Omar Alderete's back pass to Roefs was way too short which allowed Evanilson in and the Brazilian striker rounded the Sunderland keeper before sliding the ball home.

Diego Gomez scored a sensational goal from the halfway line as Brighton hammered rivals Crystal Palace.

With the Seagulls already 1-0 ahead because of Jaydee Canvot's fourth-minute headed own goal, Gomez scored one of the goals of the season three minutes later.

Olivier Boscagli won the ball from Adam Wharton and 23-year-old Paraguay midfielder Gomez, spotting away goalkeeper Walter Benitez off his line, went for goal.

Benitez sprinted back and desperately dived, but the ball went in just under the crossbar.

Data provider Opta said the goal came from 51 metres out, the furthest long-range Premier League goal since Wayne Rooney scored from 58m in Everton's 4-0 win over West Ham in November 2017.

Things got even worse for Palace as Yasin Ayari made it 3-0 after only 10 minutes, running on to Charalampos Kostoulas' backheel and firing past Benitez.

Kostoulas made it 4-0 four minutes into the second half, shooting into the net after Ayari's effort deflected into his path.

Substitute Jean-Philippe Mateta, back after nearly two months out with a hamstring injury, hit the crossbar for Palace and Jefferson Lerma headed against the post.

But Brighton added a fifth goal in the 84th minute with Jack Hinshelwood converting from close range after Benitez had parried Luka Vuskovic's header.

It meant Brighton earned their biggest win over Palace since 1956, kept their eighth clean sheet in all competitions of 2026-27 and recorded their fifth Premier League win of a superb campaign.

The result temporarily took them up to second, before they dropped back a place when Arsenal won at Nottingham Forest in Sunday's later game.

Manchester United's winless run extended to six games as Leeds United denied Michael Carrick a much-needed Premier League victory at Elland Road.

A trip to the home of long-standing bitter rivals Leeds provided a stern test of Manchester United's mettle under head coach Carrick, at the end of a tumultuous week in which defender Lisandro Martinez was fined for criticising the club's hierarchy.

Amid a raucous atmosphere, and with Martinez starting, a fiery opening featured more bookings than attempts at goal as Bruno Fernandes and Gabriel Gudmundsson were shown yellow cards for poorly timed challenges.

The game sparked into life before the half-hour mark with action at both ends, but an unmarked Bryan Mbeumo failed to hit the target with a free header shortly after a full-stretch save by Senne Lammens denied Nico Elvedi.

Mbeumo made amends when he gave the visitors a half-time lead by battling past James Justin to meet Youri Tieleman's excellent pass into the box 10 minutes before the break.

But Dominic Calvert-Lewin ignited the home crowd shortly after the interval, beating Mbeumo to a loose ball after Tarik Muharemovic was first to meet a corner.

Manchester United captain Fernandes pulled a shot wide, while Anton Stach failed to keep a first-time strike down as neither side managed to force a winner.

It meant Manchester United, 13th in the table, went a sixth game without a win in all competitions for the first time since the end of the 2018-19 campaign.

Leeds remain unbeaten at home in all competitions since March - and sit three points above Carrick's side in seventh.

Arsenal broke Nottingham Forest's resolve as a second-half strike by substitute Noni Madueke earned the defending champions a sixth Premier League win of the season.

The Gunners looked in danger of being held to their first draw of the campaign as they struggled to break down the home side's defence.

A dreadful first half did not feature any shots on target from either side, which is only the second time that has happened in the Premier League this season.

The first time was in a game that also involved Arsenal - at Aston Villa on 31 August, when the Gunners went on to win 1-0 thanks to Bukayo Saka's second-half strike.

Once again they ultimately found a way to secure all three points as Madueke - who had replaced Eberechi Eze at half-time - saw his shot deflect off Daniel Munoz and find the back of the net.

That was Arsenal's first shot on target and will have been a frustrating blow for the hosts, after they had looked like potentially upsetting the Gunners after making the better start to the second half.

But Forest paid the price for poor finishing as their search for a first home win of the season continues.

Arsenal, meanwhile, remain second in the Premier League, three points behind leaders Manchester City.
