Souths will never win a GF with Madge as their Coach

Tonight was a great example of how conservative, predictable coaching can backfire.

Maguire has coached Souths, a team of superstar athletes, to be boring and predictable rather than enterprising and creative. Hit-up, Hit-up, Hit-up, Hit-up Kick is what he has taught them…Souths are coached to only chance their arm inside the opposition 20 yard line..and tonight they fluffed it...when they tried to be creative and enterprising outside the red zone they didn't know what to do and lost the plot....to me that is the Coaches fault and I for one hope that sort of play is never rewarded..I know many sides are being coached this way now, thank god Manly are not one of them otherwise I would've gone to sleep at 9pm.. I hope Potter doesn't turn the Tigers into a boring predictable side in attack next year...

Manly are so strong in Defence and that's why they are a great side, in attack they are prepared to play "football" Souffs were not....and to me that's why Souffs lost the game tonight....unless there is a change of coaching philosophy they will never win a GF.....and boy wasn't it great to see Rusty's sour face on the box!... Manly will win this years GF for sure....and good luck to them, they deserve it

The real mistake was having Luke burgess and tyrell as their starting props. Both very average players

I dont think it is the coaches fault they lost tonight.
The fact is that the bunnies halves are not creative enough. Foran and DCE owned them completely tonight. Reynolds isnt experienced enough to guide the side in these crunch must win games.Just proves how wrong people were in calling for him to play SOO this year. Sutton is big and strong but is not a 5/8ths backside. They have also fallen victim to their own self promotion over the past couple of months. This is a good result tonight as it might help them to shut up and let their footy do the talking

I was a little surprised to see how well Manly played in that second half as well. I already knew that they were a hard tough group of footballers but they went up another level for me over their past 3 games. They always play well and especially in finals footy. We could only dream to have a side who played their guts out every weekend. Once again they have made the big day and I for one think they thoroughly deserve it.

I reckon south's looked tired in the second half. I thought south's were going to flog manly from how they started in first half.

I can't believe that no one has brought up about Maguire's Mum passing away today

It doesn't cross anyone's mind that has affected the whole club in a huge way

I honestly thought Many would be too stuffed given the previous 2 games, when the Bunnies came out of the blocks and put 14 on them I thought at the time is was pretty much all over. I guess Manly's last 2 games really steeled the side for grinding things out.

Regardless of who wins tonight, I'd expect Manly to win.

The cameras often crossed to him, at times he looked miles away, others like he didnt wanna be there, and others where it was back to busines.

It HAD to have had an affect on him and the team

I was very satisfied to wAtch manly belt souths
I have always hated manly like many others -however this year and last I have really admired them as a footy team -wish the tigers were alike mentally -they are brutal in defence and play smart football -
Southfield on the other hand are my manly to hate -they get me rightly pissed off -pride of the league my ass -they think they have a right to win and the way it's said u know league is going well when souths are going well -what a load of crap - that makes me sick -I was gunning for them to lose one game out from a final again-that's made my year reasonably bearable as to have us tigers so poor and rabbits in a or win Gf would be completely unbearable -go tigers 2014

I only switched on with about 10 mins of the first half to go, so I did not know of the death until I just read it on this forum or how the game had progressed to that stage.

I was glad to hear that Ballin has received some plaudits, as for mine he was head and shoulders above the rest with his involvement and perfect service from a dummy-half. Together with the front row rotation that were fantastic, they put it all over the bunnies through the middle, with experience triumphing the power of youth. I think the coach made a big mistake by not playing Sam Burgess tight.

Souths backline outside Inglis who was playing busted and very well contained by Manly are extremely average. The six and seven lack speed and creativity. Although lets not be to hard on Souths, takes a great team to come back from 14 blot and dominate the game and win.Manly have a hard nosed pack of forwards with a great backline and are all blessed with being ultra competive.

They got out to a 14-0 lead, i don't think you can say his mums death had an impact on the result. What id put it down to is a mix of Souths thinking they were gonna do it in a canter, Manly's toughness, and most importantly Manly getting an even share of possession after 20 mins.

You want to see an affect a death had on a team, watch the Roosters game when Robbie's mum passed. Thats an example of a team being out of it. McGuire probably didn't have his head in the game and understandably so, but i didn't see any signs from the players that they were grieving.

I know a lot of people will shoot me down for this , but the week off really does throw all sides a curve ball

No I agree with you Happy. I think that Manly's tough games against the Roosters and Sharks have primed them beautifully for a crack at the title. I know everyone was saying they'd be too tired and worn out, but it's actually had the opposite effect - it's made them stronger and given them momentum. Not to mention Manly are probably the most experienced finals football team over the last decade - they know how to lift for the occasion. The week off worked well for Canterbury and Melbourne last year, but it doesn't always work out that way. I don't know the stats, but I reckon teams that have had the week off have faltered at the last hurdle more often then not.

On Maguire and Souths, they were great all year, but finals football is different. They will be better for the experience and if they can keep much of the same team together for a couple of years, I think their time will come. Manly were just too good for them last night, no one would've stopped them, imo.

I tend to agree with most here. IMHO i yhink the following:
1\. Manly's half completely overshadowed souths for most of the game, especially second half
2\. I tend to think that souths do try to dominate the ruck too much as their main objective. And when a side holds them they don't seem to have a lot wide - why? I don't know with Inglis and Farrell - but i don't rate Goodwin or sutton - just me
3\. I don't think the coaches mum had anything to do with it. I am sure they would have wanted to win for the coach and family and after getting put to 14-0? They closed up shop, became pedestrian and couldn't go with manly once possession equalized and manly got into their stride.
4\. Souths will be a force again next year but i do think they need to be more creative and not just rely on size. Reynolds will continue to mature.

Manly in the second half just dashed out from dummy half causing havoc to Souths defense. Souths forwards had no answer and when they had them going backwards and on the back foot DCE and Foran took control.
