Spudd as defence coach?

Apart from Spud liking the sound of his own voice..he's more from a run hard tackle harder than the opposition type..yes we need a lot of that as well..a motivator .. as a tactician in the modern game with structures and patterns..not so much..

You only have to look at his commentary on KOE Cup..I just told em to get in there and belt it up..before the game

Well yeah, doesn't mean he can't value add to our squad and bring on the younger forwards

I remember him recounting last year a conversation he had with Russell Packer, after a reserve grade match, where he offered a few ideas that might help him.
Apparently Rusty said something along the lines of 'Thanks anyway, but I know what I 'm doing'.
Spud replied ... 'You're in reserve grade, mate'.

Just saw NRL Tonight and Spudd Carroll offered his services to Maguire to help out as defence coach. I'm not so sure if he would have the intricate knowledge of successful defensive systems in today's game but I think he would be a great addition to the club in a fitness/conditioning capacity. He is a winner who will not tolerate peahearts or blokes not putting in for the greater cause. Need more people with desire and fire in the belly around our club to start pulling ourselves out of the chasm we are in.

Bumped into spud in a bar in Queenstown, he hit me up for some snowboarding advice even though I am a Neville. Seemed like a real good fella. The club could use people like him to shake off our reputation as weak/soft.

Easy money. He knew what he was doing alright.

I wonder if anyone knows that he is a highly sought out personal trainer.

He may be a meathead looking guy but that doesn't mean he isn't extremely good at what he does

Forum experts in the house. . .

Was Russell Crowe’s bodyguard as well

Is that for real?

Anyway perhaps not as a defense coach but perhaps in some other capacity. I know that as Snake said these players are soft these days but seems to have a way to depreciate himself enough to get a connection and get a bit more mongrel out of our side.

Wouldn't even mind seeing blocker as a forwards consultant. Like the way he reads the game and probably could get through to young players with his plain English assessments. Seems respectful enough of both sides of the JV. Is a little close to Benny though.

Why do people keep saying this? Because he was a good player?

Ill repeat this again. He coached Tigers lower grade ( I think JF) and took them from Grand finalists the year before to spooners in the year he had them. The following year he got his nose out of joint because the club overlooked him for a assistant coaches job so he sulked off to Souffs where he coached the same Junior grade there and took them to the spoon. Souffs punted him after 1 year. He eventually got a gig at Manly as a "forwards consultant" but they also punted him. There is a reason no one employs him as any sort of a coach. He has zero idea.

Hahahaha what a terrible appointment that would be. Can we sign some real coaches please?

As a fitness/conditioning specialist? Can't see why he would be terrible.
He would definitely have a lot to offer in regards to teaching attitude in defence and working together as a unit. He always had a never say die attitude when he played, something our current group are bankrupt in.

Russell Packer has an MBA, he surely practiced what he learnt on us… $3m over 4 years and we were lucky if he excelled in more than 4 games….he dudded us big time and his bank balance thanks us

Of course he knew what he was doing. Being in reserve grade was his intention.

I like Dean Pay. Was dealt a similar hand to Madge but Canterbury knifed him before they got their cap back in shape.

We’ll see, Burton and JAC are pretty big talents. They still have holes though.

I wasn't aware of his limited coaching history.
Did think as a type of forwards consultant in a limited role could offer something in keeping with the direction the club is taking trying to reintroduce some character into the joint.
Reckon we've got a pretty dumb squad and his intelligent reads in plain English could be useful.

How good ,bad was he at Manly?

Personally I'd be keeping him away from the joint. There could be an argument to get him, Garry Jack, (insert Magpie) here for "inspiration" but I wouldnt. Whilst these guys might fire us up, none of these kids playing ever saw any of these guys and some old bloke telling you "In my day son......" is unlikely to do much. Additionally it reinforces Balmain/Wests.

Im all for getting the class of 2005 in to inspire but purely on an occassional basis. We need professionalism and technical training. Modern play, even in the forwards is technical, particularly defence. Modern professionals please.
