St Greg's Old Boys Rugby League Development

Some people may be aware that the Rugby League Secondary School Powerhosue, St Gregory's College, has been rumoured to be losing it's League culture. Last year the Telegraph had a huge spread in relation to the school moving away from League and into Union (a rumour strongly denied).

Well there are a group of old boy's, several known to many of us, who are not prepared to let that happen. Peter Mullholland, Warren McDonnell and Martin Bullock are part of the group attempting to re-establish the college as the number 1 League school.

They persuaded the Headmaster to allow the employment of a full-time head coach of the first grade side - on the condition that the school did not have to pay a cent  So through sponsorships and fundraising the committee has employed a full-time coach for 2010 - Lee Addison - I don't know much about him but I think he was Manly's Harold Matt's coach last year. They have also contributed some new training gear, etc.

In my opinion, this is a great initiative (I may be a little biased, as I am a passionate St Gregs old boy myself) and I think is a good thing for the Tigers. Firstly, if League lifts another notch at the school, they will continue to attract the talent. The Tigers have the edge when it comes to recruiting these guys - especially in the case of students from the country who have to board. Due to training being in close proximity, the Magpies often have high quality boarders playing Matts/SG Ball on the weekends, take for instance Matt Groat. Provided the Tigers keep their foot in the door, they will maintain an advantage in a very competitive player market.

Plenty of talent has been produced in the last few years - Ryan Hoffman, Brendan Oake, Beau Scott, Stuart Flanagan, Taulia Tautai, Peni Tagive - and at the Tigers we only currently have Lawrence, Mataka and Mullaney in the NRL mix. Hopefully over the next few years we can continue to develop and maintain some of the talent.

Anyway I thought some of you would find this interesting. I am not trying to make anyone pay the $100 to become a member, you would want to be pretty passionate to want to pay such a ridiculous amount in my opinion

I think this is a disgrace that the Old Boys have to fund a fulltime Rugby league Coach at St Greg's. I too am an Old Boy of the school & I believe all the Marist Bros Headmasters from the past would be turning over in their graves to learn that this great league school has gone over to encouraging the boys to play "yawnion"- that game is a bloody disgrace to any sane thinking human being as it takes no skill at all to play and iots full of gays and fairies as well as wimps. Wake up to yourself St Gregs or u will disappear into oblivion!!!!!!!1

Terrible news that they are heading down this path….when I was there we won 3 commonwealth cups out of the 6 years I was there. Skull was coach and the place was just kicking everyones backsides.

Opportunity for the tigers here....

It would be good to see the Tigers support St Gregs more. The Tigers have a stronger relationship with Keebra Park up in Qld which is all well and good, but when you've got a powerful league nursery in your backyard, commonsense says use it!

St gregs may be going down the rugby union path as it provides something for borders to do on the weekends. School rugby is played on the weekends, whilst rugby league is a weekday event. When I was there the school was having some problems in the borders playing in local comp. I can't see St Gregs stopping playing in the MCS, so hopefully they will always keep that league attachment. Ideally you would think the tigers could have a decent impact at the school and help foster local talent.

The MCS comp is a mere shadow of what it used to be, highlighted by the fact that Farfield Pats doesn't have a footy team anymore. Additionally, I think they have finally started to allow the Gregs boys to play in the local Wests rep teams. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think young Groat is a prime example.

I would love for WT and St Gregs to have something more formal in place

To be completely fair the school has an increased focus on academics compared with the glory league years. This is the right direction as well. The school is not going to maintain enrollment numbers simply by being the best league school in the country. League success is not the focus of the leadership team at St Gregs anymore, it is merely a bonus - so there is no way in hell they are going to pay $30k a year to a footy coach who is not even going to teach any classes. The fact that they are allowing a full-time coach at all is a big step forward in my opinion.

For the record, the current principal at St Greg's is not a Marist Brother - nor is any of the leadership team - thus the tradition just isn't as strong anymore. Marist Brother numbers are dwindling, any Brother that is experienced enough to be a principal is probably bed-ridden.

I am currently at Marist College Eastwood playing in the MCS comp and it is a very high quality. We were supposed to play Gregs yesterday (about there 3rd grade squad) but had to forfeit THANK GOD. If the MCS comp is a shadow of what it used to be then it must of been incredible before.
