Well where do I start. Our fifth biggest defeat since the merge, and wasn't it painful to watch.
The Raiders ran absolutely riot, with 10 Raiders running over 100m, J.Tedesco (129) and A.Seumanufagai (135) were our only players running over 100m. In total the Raiders ran over 1000m more than the Tigers did (2710-1658). In the second half alone, the Raiders ran 1303m compared to our 570m. Tigers missed 28 tackles and made 15 ineffective tackles. The Raiders missed 17 tackles, 5 of those on J.Tedesco. Second-phase play was once again non-apparent in the Tigers game, making only 1 offload compared to Canberra's 10.
Despite the scoreline, (and trying to be positive) the Tigers completion rate wasn't exactly terrible, completing 78% of sets (21/27). On the other hand, the Raiders completed 88% (38/43). To put that into perspective, the Tigers failed to complete 6 sets, compared to the Raiders 5\. However, having 42% of possession and conceding 10 penalties made things difficult. The significant difference in possession led to the Tigers making almost 100 more tackles than the Raiders (Raiders 241-335). The Tigers spent 10 minutes in the Raiders 20, yet the Raiders spent more than double that time in the Tigers 20 (22 mins). To narrow it down, our worst period of the game was once again between 40-60 minutes, where we conceded 22 points.
Congratulations to Kevin Naiqama on being the only Tiger who managed to offload the ball last night. As stated previously, the Raiders made 10 offloads, compared to Tigers 1\. Five of those offloads came from J. Leilua. In hand, Leilua crossed the line twice, as well as coming up with 5 line break assists and 2 try assists. Additionally, 17 runs for 215m resulted in Rapana being the lead runner for the game, as well as scoring 2 tries from Leilua assists, plus another 2 (4 in total).The short-ball play from Hodgson led to early tries from Whitehead and Boyd. J.Hodgson racked up 5 try assists and 4 LBA's. In total the Raiders made 11 line-breaks, C.Lawrence was the only Tiger to break the Raiders line, ultimately leading to our only try.
In the halves, neither Sezer or Williams assisted in a try or line-break. The Raiders halves made 11 runs combined (7 and 4 respectively). For the Tigers, Brooks made 8 runs (72m) from 33 possessions and made 15 tackles, along with 5 misses and 2 ineffective tackles. In 22 possessions, Moses failed to run the ball, yet led the game in kick metres with 218m from 4 kicks. The Raiders wingers and fullback had an easy night. Jack Wighton caught 3 kicks on the full, Lee and Rapana both defused bomb kicks with no issues.
Both Lawrence and Sironen played 80 minutes, Chris Lawrence put in a notable defensive effort with a 97% tackle efficiency (38/39). Sironen also made 34 tackles. The two combined made a total of 13 runs for 110m (Sironen 5, Lawrence 8). In comparison to Canberra's second-rowers, Papalii made 15 runs for 178m and Whitehead made 12 runs for 129m. To put that into perspective, Papalii made more runs and more metres than both of our second rowers combined. Whilst Canberra dominated possession, it was J.Hodgson who led the tackle count making 44 tackles without a miss. Next in line is R.Farah making 41 tackles with 2 misses. The Tigers forward pack was once again led by (to an extent) Seumanufagai with 14 runs (135m), 28 tackles and only 2 misses in 53 minutes. Due to the injury to Halatau, Lovett was able to get more game time than usual. In 50 minutes, Lovett took 9 runs for 97m, making 1 tackle break and 21 tackles with only 1 miss.
We can only improve for next week (you would hope so) against Souths this Thursday night.
