UTOIKAMANU SET TO ATTRACT SEVEN FIGURES FROM RIVAL CLUBS AS TIGERS TARGET POTENTIAL REPLACEMENT

The Wests Tigers are set to lose Stefano Utoikamanu with the star prop likely to test himself on the open market.
Despite being offered $4 million over five seasons by the Tigers, the 24-year-old will reportedly trigger the clause in his contract which will make him a free agent after he wasn’t selected for NSW in State of Origin and with Wests set to miss another finals series.
The Daily Telegraph’s David Riccio said the in-demand prop is not short on potential suitors.
“I know a club that are willing to pay close to $1 million for him,” Riccio revealed on
SEN 1170 Breakfast.
“Money won’t be an issue on the open market for him compared to what the Tigers are willing to offer him.
“There’s a crucial meeting at the club this week between (CEO) Shane Richardson and (coach) Benji Marshall who are going to meet with Stefano again.
“It’s one last crack to convince him to stay or at least not go to the open market. I think there's no chance of that happening.
“It’ll be fascinating to see which clubs enter the bidding war because as I said, I know at least one club who are willing to pay at least $1 million or more in order to get him.
“He’ll go to the open market. It’s a fait accompli.”
Riccio further revealed that the Tigers have already identified Utoikamanu’s replacement if he departs the club.
The Tigers are reportedly interested in acquiring Melbourne Storm enforcer Nelson Asofa-Solomona but Riccio believes that deal is fraught with danger.
“If things do fall over with Stefano, the Wests Tigers will have a look at the Nelson Asofa-Solomona situation,” Riccio added.
“The Storm have been loath to release Nelson at any point and he is struggling as far as being a mainstay of the Storm lineup.
“They have shown no indication that they are willing to release him, he’s got three years left on his contract and he is on massive money.
“My point to the Tigers is that you always have to be careful of players let go by the Melbourne Storm.
“Justin Olam has been solid for the Tigers without being outstanding and that’s my concern.
“It’s where the Tigers may look to head if they lose Utoikamanu.”
The Tigers will look to win their third match in a row for the first time since Round 6 2018 when they play the Sydney Roosters on Sunday evening.
“He’ll go to the open market. It’s a fait accomplis.”
