Sticky could have been Tigers 2012 Coach

With Tim Sheens' coaching career at Wests Tigers on life support, former board member Ben Elias revealed the club could have had Ricky Stuart take over for 2012.

Sheens survived the first board meeting over his future, but it appears increasingly unlikely that he will be in charge by Monday night.

He will face another board meeting where his performance and future will be discussed on Monday, and Elias suggested on Sunday it was time for Sheens to move on and called on the veteran mentor to step down "for his own credibility".

Elias revealed that when Sheens was deciding whether to re-sign with the Tigers last year or take up a lucrative offer from Penrith, the club had a contingency plan in place to recruit then-NSW coach Stuart, who will coach Parramatta in 2013, to replace him.

"At the time when we re-signed him it was very controversial," the Balmain legend told ABC Radio's Grandstand.

"We had another coach in the shadows ready to go.

"Ricky Stuart was going to coach the Tigers if (Sheens) hadn't signed.

"He decided to coach and we came to an agreement of three years.

"That situation, obviously, we continued for the next 12 months and here we are today."

How it has unravelled so quickly is unclear, although an underwhelming performance in 2012 that resulted in the Tigers missing the finals for the seventh time under Sheens' reign seems the tipping point.

"Unfortunately at the moment we've missed out on the top eight and in our position as such a highly contended side to win the premiership this year we've not even made the top eight," Elias said.

"At the end of the day I think the coach is always going to be accountable for those results.

"… I think the present Wests Tigers board, the Balmain and the Wests contingent are very, very clearly of the opinion that results aren't good enough and it's time to move on."

Sheens has consistently been linked with the Warriors coaching role vacated by Brian McClennan late this year, but there have been no concrete discussions between either party to date.

Elias said it would be a win-win situation to have Sheens link with the Warriors, ending his 10-year stay at the Tigers.

"There would be no better person ... to go to the Warriors and do a job over there they haven't done - that is to win a premiership," Elias said.

"He would be absolutely ideal.

"He continues his coaching (past) the age of 61 ... and (it is good for) the Tigers because we offset a lot of the dollars that would have been required to pay him on his exit of the Tigers coaching role for the next two years.

"... I think for his own credibility and his own self esteem he should amicably work (with) the Tigers (to) come to a position with him to leave with credibility."

Elias' comments capped off a dramatic day at camp Concord where it was also revealed that skipper Robbie Farah was being courted by rivals Parramatta, while star five-eighth Benji Marshall's future at the club is also far from settled.

Never thought I'd agree with benny….his comments towards the end of that article are what we want....hopefully he can take moltzen too

Take it as fact. Robbie was spewing when we resigned sheens last year. Straight from his managers mouth

Not sold on Stuarts ability as a coach and only his performance in 2015 will determine if he is good or a chump! I lean towards the latter!

I really don't think Ricky would've suited us.

He doesn't like players with a lot of flair that can win games if they have mistakes in their game. Coaching Benji would send him round the bend and coaching us in general would've been very challenging without wholesale change from our current style. Look the clean out / players he didn't back at the sharks.

He's also a momentum coach and struggles to turn things around when morale drops. As much as everyone pumps him up in the media about his efforts with origin, he's getting some great players that are pretty self motivated and he just has to keep them that way… hardly the same challenge as a club coach.

I don't think the answer for us was Ricky Stewart

Stuart is chimp ….. Yes chimp like a Monkey , so god Dam dumb , was sacked from his last 2 clubs and will be sacked by his 3rd club , so glad he wasn't coaching at WTs this year we would have run last

I don't particularly rate Sticky as a coach but I know one thing. If he was coaching us this year we wouldn't have rolled over like a pack of weak dogs and let the Roosters put 40 on us in round 25, that's for sure.

how can you say this with any certainty?
he has coached nsw origin to two series loses. just because they were 'closer' doesnt mean he is any good. its like being happy getting closer to the 8 from a wooden spoon position, yet people jump up and down like he's some sort of coaching god.
he was a good player and is an average coach. he may improve over time, but i dont like his attitude. a complete willie wonka.

He certainly made a bad call when he got rid of kimmorly at the sharks. They plunged from first in 08 to the bottom of the table and the doggies made it to the finals.

Sheens > Stuart.
Dodged a bullet there, gotta feeling you'll see him crumble @ Parra like many have in the past.

Massive Bullet dodged more like a grenade dodge , or nuclear bomb dodge

It really is unfortunate that our board allows it self to be influenced by rash egomaniacs like Ellias and Roach , it's well known that rugby league players aren't the cleverest creatures , yet here we are listening to punch drunk pensioners .

I really hope they do the sensible thing and keep Sheens

1\. Because he is the best coach who is available to WTs at the moment
2\. We can't offord the pay out
3\. For me , changing coaches is more likely to result in worse results then better results , the stability of having had a guy like Sheens in charge for this long is a huge Advantage , we would be mad to forfeit that .

Rambo,

To point number 3 - you realize 3 out of the 4 top teams this year had coaches in their maiden season at the club?

Shake up looks good at this stage!

That's all good and well ,

If we could get a guy like Hasler or McGuire or wouldn't be complaining ,

Steve Folks as head coach, is the only reasonable alternative to Sheens , the rest are too risky

Both of them are proven when it comes to getting results

Toovey ….... I think Hasler is as much responsible for Manlys success this year as Toovey is .

If
