Support Play

Yes, and also that awareness, positioning, and ever-alert back up play of a Lamb, Hynes, Slater, Cherry Evans type player.
I always felt that we'd be a club where this would a natural go-to play with the ad hoc, in the moment stuff we are renowned for over the years since Benji but ..........

If it means standing still and looking at the football, then yeah we are great at it. I don't expect it correlates to offloads, are we comp-leaders in offloads? Sorry I'm too lazy just now to look it up.

I was aware of that stat.

I mentioned the other day that our breakdown in that Joffa play was through lack of supporting him. I really do wonder how they get the numbers for these stats.

I suspect it's primarily when a player is doing a hit up and someone follows him up "in support". I know Laurie has been pretty good at that.

It's a weird stat because it's very noticeable that we struggle in this area. Maybe it's just when Nofa runs the ball side ways and nearly runs into his teammates we're racking up support numbers.

Interestingly we were 13th in this last year, I don't understand how it's got better. Maybe Laurie, but his support play is not that great either.

We lack pretty much all the basics of rugby league really. Good teams to the basics excellently at all times while it seems we are constantly doing dumb crap

No amount of player signings will fix that. Has to be fixed at training by the coaches

The problem with constantly chopping and changing the team is that we've been unable to have the stability to generate a formula that facilitates both individual and team improvement - with the main difficulty being the various ages and experience levels of the playing group.
Their skills and development are all at different stages, and I think it's as simple as our options often look poor when communication is poor because there's been restraint to push them (by our leadership group).

Honestly feels like Madge is primarily focused on values based outcomes for the team - which isn't too bad IMO, as it lessens the pressures and helps instil commitment and teaches them how to self-moderate their performances. It's how they learn to attribute their own input/effort and accept their responsibility in the team. We're just lacking the tough, competitive, win-at-all-costs-type players to drive it home and motivate everyone. Ideally those from the succesful systems.
We really do have a young playing and leadership group and it's not surprising we're unable to capitalise on all opportunities or perform consistently when it requires such a concerted effort, from a playing group with some diverse capabilities.
