Is anyone else still amazed how this story has legs and is still being reported?

The AOC had banned Stilnox use to all athletes

The 6 swimmers involved are still being untruthful Emily Seebohm has said she was still getting calls after 11.00PM and the door knocking was still going on after this

The interview clearly says there has been a culture of initiations in the past and on past teams

Put yourself in some of the young girls shoes , they were in a different country having male swimmers coming into their room late at night making lewd suggestions 5 days before the biggest swimming meet they get every 4 years

And then Seebohm approaches Nugent the next day and he denies it was swimmers or even Australians

No wonder we had the worst results in the pool in over 20 years at an Olympics
 
It's worth keeping in mind that we're paying for these people to go over there (plus the expenses in getting them to that point). I think the public is entitled to expect that they're there to compete and not carry on like clowns. As Happy points out, it's not even that they ruined their own chances by being dopes, they disrupted others too. If it was my first games I'd be pretty dirty on them - who knows if you get another chance?

Also we've now had 2 olympics where the men have failed to win an individial gold (pretty sure that's right) despite going into the games with several top ranked swimmer. Time to get some decent control over these guys - if you want to play the fool and not give it your best stay at home.
 
It's all a scam to sell newspapers. Daily Telegraph has made all this crap up across all the sports & codes purely to sell papers. Cricket was boring over summer and Julia Gillard stories aren't moving papers either. So they have manufactured scandals and Sonny Bill Williams stories to get back on the top of stands.

What I meant by the story having legs is that it's still such a big story and front page news/headlines in February 2013.

It does seem to have a fair feel of media beat-up to it. Yes the boys did wrong, were stupid and interrupted others preparations but I'm not sure they have to be apologizing to the public and the media. Swimming is such a lonely sport and not a financially rewarding one either. We the public demand these swimmers to win gold medals but in the end it comes down to being the best on the day and that won't always be the strongest swimmer.

The bit about Leigh Nugent was a little worrying and I'm sure that's how this issue has been able to rise into what it is.

I think I'm just over this story. These guys should have been disciplined in London or a month or two afterwards. I think this has more to do with the leadership and culture of swimming rather then these 6 boys.

I agree with a lot you say Alan My issue is that a lot of these 16-18 year old swimmers live life in a bubble Training ,school, training, study ,bed and thats about it

We take them to another country , and put the pressure of ours and the press's expectations on them

The last thing they need is older male swimmers who are their heroes hitting on them (some of whom only having jocks on ) in their own rooms 5 days beforehand

As 1 young swimmer mentioned she was doing a time trial for a relay spot the next morning

These people are using my taxes to be clowns , I want them to compete at their best and once their events are finished THEN they can party like its 1999
 
The biggest indictment is on the coach. He knew about it but took no action against these "talented" male swimmers.
 
Seriously… We had the worlds greatest ever swimmer on the team... Just ask him, he is a missile!

FTR - I wouldve assumed these things went on at every Olympics... No big deal is my vote!
 
It's topical, another glaring example of wasted tax payers dollars, the working population of Australia pays for these people to compete, not be clowns
 
The funding is a result of the governments desire to provide feel-good stories for the nation to rejoice… I do find it frustrating my tax dollars appear to be directed to these shananigans, but I don't blame the athletes.

The Athletes have not misrepresented our tax money, the government has, by allowing such things to go on without clearer monitors in place.
 
What a bunch of knobheads….who would find knock-and-runs entertaining once you have passed the age of 7 or 8? Geez that is more embarrassing to admit to than taking the Stillnox I reckon.

And the "missile" having a whinge about being under too much pressure???? Wake up you friggin moron, all we heard in the lead-up to the Olympics was how great you thought you were and how fantastic you were going to perform, you brought the scrutiny on yourself. 100% tosser.
 
it's time IMO, that when they not competing/ training, they work as a labourer, for a brickie or a plumber, to show them how good they have it.

a dose of reality, and epsom salts, will sort them out.
 
In my opinion banning Stillnox was a mistake. These young kids have an event they have been building up to their entire life. If they blow it they have to wait another 4 years for another shot. Imagine being in their shoes. I can't imagine the nights leading in being very easy, throw in the fact there was no team psychologist it would be hard for some of them to get their heads right. If they monitored the use of it then maybe the athletes wouldn't have taken their own supply and abused it.
 
Have you ever taken stillnox Marshal? It is a pretty crazy drug. I remember they tried to ban it once because people on planes were trying to open the doors mid flight. I used to take it a lot in Asia as you could buy it over the counter everywhere. It messes you up.

Is it similiar to Nodoze ??
 
Way stronger Happy. I had a mate who slept for 36 hours straight on it once. I can understand athletes taking sleeping tablets to ensure a good nights rest before competition, but not this one….it certainly knocks you out but there are some bad side effects that I am surprised an elite athlete would risk.
 
Stryker is right. MM - to suggest they be allowed to use the stuff under supervision I think misinterprets their intentions. They didn't want to take it responsibility they wanted to use it to abuse it.

It's a prescription drug for a reason - what next? Supervised methadone?
