Tallyn Da Silva #270

Looking for our stats guys,
How has TDS performed when starting as our NRL hooker ?

As I recollecting at the start of this year when API wasn’t available he was dropped for our 3rd rated hooker (was it Hope) to start the game.
Just interested to see his performance when required to start when everyone else is fresh against coming on late against tired legs ?

And if you break things down a bit, it's not like our recruitment has been great.

Luai - Made him one of the highest paid players in the game and offered more than 1.5x the money on a longer deal than the club he was at. He's a good 5/8th and not a halfback either.

Hunt - 3 year deal on big money, already in reserves.

Turuva - Solid signing.

Skelton - Don't think he's a first grader long-term but a nice low-risk, high upside signing.

Bird - Whatever. He's average and will probably be dropped by the end of the year / next year.

May - Great signing, albeit more luck than anything else because the Roosters decided to punt him.

KPP hasn't joined yet, but I think it's a decent signing based on the figures and his potential.

So really since Richo/Benji have been working together, we've had 1 great siging in May, I'd say Skelton and Turuva were good buys, Bird and Hunt aren't looking too great and I'll give the Luai deal an incomplete, but unless he drastically improves as a player, it could be Brooks 2.0 and hamstring us for a while.
Hunt is not on Big Money
and don’t underestimate the culture change Luai has brought to the club.
Most understand that as a club we are still around 4 quality players short of being a consistent top 4-6 team.

My positives so far this year
Both front rowers
Fainu & Pole have improved,
To’a causes opposition trouble,
Plus lately Fainu in the half’s looking the goods.

TDS is not even close to an 80 minute player. Coming off the bench for 30 mins mid game is a completely different story to starting and playing 60-70 minutes. Look at how much less impact Bailey Hayward has had since starting. Look at Jacob Liddle for example at Saints, he is a brilliant bench hooker who looks like hes on the cusp of origin almost. As a starting hooker, he is a solid NRL player whose pass is probably slightly behind where it needs to be, and his running game is less effective.

TDS is much the same. He was very valuable for 25 minutes, and had a big impact in many of our wins (EG - Parra R2). However, he has alot to work on. The Storm game he was struggling to make basic tackles against their big men. The ideal situation is we keep both in a shared role. However, Benji needs to be fair as well, because to say we needed our best players on the field Friday Night does not reflect the fact we have improved significantly when a fresh TDS comes on against tiring defence.

If TDS doesn't believe in the club's vision going forward, what can you do about it.
You can't tell him you're staying, lock him in the vacant barber shop only to be let out for training and game day.

What can the club do they want him to stay but he looks to have his heart set on moving to another club to get more 1st grade game time
which by the way isn't a given, it's disappointing but junior player churn happens at other clubs too you only have your own club under the microscope most of the time.

But if we do, it's not any more a slight on Benji's coaching than it is on any coach that loses players. And EVERY coach loses players. Ivan Cleary, on that theory, is probably the worst coach in the NRL. Imagine losing Katoa & Luai & Burton. What a terrible recruitment record!
Blaize Talagi is starting to look pretty good for Penrith after a shaky start to the season. Just cause you lose someone doesn't mean you can't replace them. People on this forum are saying Jared Haywood is pretty good, and I feel like people were raving about Galvin for 2+ years before we saw him debut. So I'm inclined to believe that if TDS leaves, we still have someone good coming through in his position.

That's not my point though.

The problem is we're the worst performing team in the league choosing to prioritise older players over juniors we've developed, while the best teams in the league are choosing to prioritise our juniors over established players.
I see what you are saying.

The 2 clubs are at polar opposite ends of the spectrum.

A team like Penrith has established stars in place & can filter through junior players while the experienced guys around them nurture their way through the early stages of development.

The Tigers are bereft of quality players & the juniors coming through are often relied upon to make the immediate impact in order to cover for the lack of quality the older players possess.

Latu Fainu would be an interesting side note to watch on occasions in a team like Penrith.

He's the future that unlocks Luai at the Tigers.

We need more Api's, Luai's etc & less Galvin's & Latu Fainu's populating the top squad if we intend to win games.

Look at the Dolphins. They are a team on the verge of making the finals. Katoa is a young, emerging player.

How many other, young emerging players are in that squad, compared to pretty established guys?

At the Tigers? Latu, Samuela, Sione, Da Silva, Bula, Mason, Sukkar, Lualili'i x 2.....only 1 has cracked 50 games- Bula @ 52 games.

Think about how much these guys are relied on, not just to start, but be some of our BEST players.

I think we need people with better powers of persuasion.

He should want to stay here.

We need to be a club that players want to play for.

He could be part of building that, like Jerome and our panthera.

He’s got to get it through his thick skull that playing for the Wests Tigers is a very big deal.

It’s a genuine accomplishment, it’s next to sacred.

The coach has an enormous say on who wants to stay and leave. And if we lose TDS after Galvin, two players of enormous potential, you have to question the coach and the club.
If it was a choice between keeping Galvin and TDS... or Latu and Mason...

Im taking Latu and Mason every day of the week...

Its nothing but nostalgia when it comes to retaining juniors.. Bulldogs have somehow convinced everyone they are a "development club " despite their success all coming from singing players from other clubs..

The problem isnt TDS attack (although i do recall some absolute howlers from him this year).. the problem is his defence . So we might open up the attack... Or be opened up by the oppositions attack... I don't think it's as straightforward as everyone makes out. Look at how exposed Mason was on Friday.. they would have done the same to TDS... Then there'd be another narrative about Benji making the wrong decision.. doesn't matter what Benji does, ppl are going to critisize and keep saying he's an amateur and has no experience.. no matter how well we are progressing.

Unfortunately, some young players today are very impatient, how do you change their mindset use hypnotism, brainwashing or a last resort a cattle prod.

If Benji with his man management skills or Richo's powers of persuasion attempts to keep them doesn't work I can understand giving up and letting them go, what can you do if they don't want to wait till it's their time for the team's sake.

It's very easy to get worked up over losing players, particularly junior players.

Perspective is key.

Losing Galvin = bad look. Potentially generational talent etc, blah blah.

However- signed Latu Fainu from Manly. Potentially generational talent etc blah blah.

Losing Galvin who was exposed to 1st grade, Da Silva the same, guys like Large that never had a chance to show etc...

Replaced with all the Fainu's...Seyfarth...took Twal as a kid, Doueihi..To'a was undeveloped..

And with the likes of Bula, Mason, the Lualili'i's, Pole, Sukkar...and with guys like Saukuru, Godinet, Tapau-Moors, Tannous, Broederlow, Haywood...still coming through...all from our junior paths...

It is easy to focus on the ones you lose.

Don't lose track of how many get developed & become part of the club. It's not as if teams have 100% turnover in playing personnel each season. There are only so many Top 30 spots to go around- you WILL lose players..because not many spots open up every year on the roster.

I don't want to lose Da Silva.

Tigers want to build something from the mess we have had. Api, regardless of age, is a huge part of that. Probably responsible for Luai & Turuva. Who are probably responsible for May & May.

What has Da Silva's development brought into the club?
You are talking too much common sense, stop it.

I suppose so…sad though.

No, I strongly disagree.

TDS is a better player with more potential then Mason.

And Galvin has runs on the board with many experts saying he is the real deal whilst Latu has a fair bit more to prove.

Will suck to lose him, seems like a great kid and a hard worker. Whatever happened, I feel like it could have been prevented. Which makes it suck even more.

Saw him as a future leader/captain of our club if he'd stuck around.

Not ready for 80 or starting in the next year IMO, but good luck to him if that's what he gets.

Obviously something has happened, Richo was keen to loan him to the Knights with the idea of getting KPP a few months early and this was rejected by TDS and it would appear all negotiations broke down from that point. My guess TDS has gone down the Galvin road and has told the Tigers he wants out no matter what the Tigers offer.

Another blow to our brand but not to our playing roster. The kid can play and probably will cut a NRL career but miles from being I replaceable.

I smell a rat called Gus could be involved

Other clubs don’t lose their young stars who they publicly boast they will be building the club around.

Tell us how well we are progressing please.

Not that I can recall recently but they do loose talented juniors, parra lost Blaze who was showing some potential there would be plenty of others without doing a heap of research.

You would have to be under the hood of all the NRL clubs to know the height of their expectations for a promising junior the difference being they keep their mouth shut our it isn't leaked to the media.
