Taupau not happy with bench spot

I have always felt comfortable with Galloway and Woods starting because they're more your traditional front rower and geneerally get the team rolling forward with an even share of possession. Galloway though needs to improve this year because last year he was disappointing, and with how Taupau performed…The other factor is Ava who looks the fittest I've ever seen him and will be pushing to play more minutes this year. It's a good position to be in IMO.

thank you!

taupau will eventually get to start if thats what he wants, 1 injury to woods or big red (fingers cross) and he's straight in.

if he does become more versatile like he intends to he could easily force his way into our starting backrow too given how little expereince there is there

but as of round 1, he's best as an impact player like fifita as opposed to matt scott.

It's a matter of making the most of the roster that exists atm and based on what I saw last year, Marty offers most coming off the bench while Sauce offers more starting, these are the players the coach has to work with. Just as important will be other players aiming up around Marty and Sauce ie Woods, Jesse, Siro and Lodge, while Ava looks to be aimed at giving a good account of himself already judging by his fitness and the clips I've seen. Whilst it's great Marty is looking to improve further by his own words, at the end of the day the coach will position players as he sees them compliment as a Team.

Agree Cunno. I reckon its a no-brainer; he works best for us off the bench. Galloway will go good this year if he is fit.

Gahh its the same story when you hear about wingers wanting to be fullbacks. Some are amazing wingers then they move to fullback and they are shit house.

Marty is incredible off the bench. The whole point of the bench is to add impact when the opposition are getting tired. He does this better than anyone. Why does he have to see this as a negative?

If he can transition to lock though it would really add some size to our back row.

I really like Taupau.
Think he is a terrific player.
I also think that he offers most value for us giving us 40-50 high impact minutes coming off the bench.

As for Galloway, another player unfairly maligned by the fans. Most fans like to see blokes charge into the line and belt blokes in defence, it is exciting to watch. Galloway doesn't do this, so fans think he is rubbish.

He performs his duties well, he runs his 100 m a game, almost always finds his front and gets a reasonable play the ball. He generally wins the tackle in defence and is deceptively good at controlling his space in defence.

There is a reason we win a lot more when he plays, and that is he is pretty effective, if not aesthetically pleasing.

Thank you Goose, that's it in a nutshell, and explains his value in defence perfectly.

If we didn't have Keith he'd be exactly the type of player we'd say we need…

Total agree with Goose and Barra. KG and Taupau are two different beasts. The opposition wont be able to go through the middle of us while KG is there. And once the traditional softening up period ends, bring on Taupau to run wild.

Galloway no longer in top four props at tigers -woods/tapau/Ava/lodge. These are the clear cut. It's debatable if he is better than others like Buchanan etc. transition to England would be great.

The way the game is heading these days, lock is pretty much being used as a 3rd prop. In recent yrs Merrin has shifted to lock. Gallen's role doesn't change whether he plays 10 or 13\. Now Aiden Tolman looks to be the latest to shift from prop to lock. Its a trend that seems to be growing. Why not play Taupau at 13?

OR

Why not move Woods to lock? He has a lot of similarities to Merrin, I don't think it would be beyond him to play close to 80 mins. I can see him ending up there some time down the line.

I think Taupau has to be at lock unless you play Woods at lock. Whatever the case I think if Marty wants a starting spot he should be given it. He is one of our best forwards and we need to keep him happy.

I agree up until this point. Well i don't disagree, but i don't believe that what he's saying is an ultimatum. He wants to start like every player does, and he feels he probably has earned it. But there's no indication that he'll want out if it doesn't happen. People are overreacting imo.

I may be the only one trumpeting these thoughts but…

I don't care how much of an impact you have for 40 or 50 min. What about the other 30 or 40 min? You have one of your best players watching the game! You need your best players on the field for as long as possible. The spine to start with.

If Marty wants to play and not from the bench - he needs to be able to play for 80 min. I am sure he could - so that is where he should be - on the field.

I like how - going back a few months, 95% of posters said he wasn't a back rower - now we have quite a number of people saying play him at lock.

IMO, I think it is the wrong way of thinking again.
Why you ask - and I've said this a number of times, he should be in the second row with Sironen. The lock is a no contest....Santi.

Ave and Lodge are your new impact players.

With this side you have 4 front rowers who can tackle and are good hitting up, and a hooker that tackles all day and one of the best dummy halves in the business. Two big second rowers who can offload to centres and wingers, after drawing a few defenders and creating space. Maybe a ball back inside to quick halves backing up or Teddy flying through. Santi will tackle anything that moves all day (it will be Fulton again, only better) and he'll take his share of hit ups as well.

That eighth spot would be shaking and maybe causing concern to the 6 and 7\. Let's wait and see what side we end up with......

I don't believe that he is giving an ultimatum either. I do think though that he deserves it. It he wants it and he deserves you should give it to him.
