Ellis given until the last opportunity to play

Reddy named on the left wing

I read it was a chronic heal problem requiring injections before every match

RACE IS ON FOR GARETH ELLIS

Gareth Ellis will be given every chance to prove his fitness leading into the round 3 clash against St George-Illawarra this Friday night.

Ellis suffered a nasty corked thigh injury in the loss to Manly last Friday night. He has been named in the side by Head Coach Tim Sheens but will continue to be monitored by the rehab staff.

Joel Reddy has been named on the left wing for the match at WIN Jubilee Oval to replace the injured Matt Utai (knee).

Sheens says playing Friday night footy in front of a packed crowd should bring the best out of his team. Both sides have recorded one win apiece and head into the match on the back of round two losses.

“They (St George-Illawarra) won’t be happy about that (big loss to the Bulldogs) and will be embarrassed so I’m sure they will come out fired up,’’ Sheens said.

“Both sides are 1 and 1 and both need to win. Friday night footy normally generally brings the best out of you so we are anticipating a really tough game.

“There is a bit of Leichhardt in (Kogarah) from the point of view being closed in. The crowd will be pretty parochial I imagine but I think there will be a few Wests Tigers fans there as well.”

Sheens also dismissed media reports that Wests Tigers don’t like ‘playing winning, grinding football’.

“When we won 9 in a row last year, I didn’t hear them saying that,’’ Sheens added.

“People can say what they like. We will just keep our heads down and keep playing footy. If I worried about what everyone said about me or the team, all I be doing would be pulling my hair out.

“I’ve lost enough hair as it is over the years . I’m not concerned about what people are saying at all.”
