Teammates love Taupau's aggression

Wests Tigers enforcer Martin Taupau can fly pretty close to that line between aggression and madness sometimes, as witnessed in the Kiwis' historic win over the Kangaroos last weekend, but his teammates wouldn't have him any other way.

Taupau was in the thick of things on Sunday against the Aussies; his immediate impact off the bench was crucial to New Zealand's win and he was close to best on field.

His 129 metres from 12 powerful charges was the most of any NZ forward while his four tackle breaks was the most of any forward in the match and he added two offloads and 13 stinging tackles.

Despite his quality all-round performance it was a throat-slitting gesture he made to Kangaroos back-rower Sam Thaiday for a crusher tackle (albeit one that is likely to see the Bronco sit out a game due to suspension) that attracted the most attention.

While Kiwi captain Simon Mannering distanced the team from the gesture post-match, saying "that's not us", it's that same fiery aggression and passion that makes Taupau such an asset to the Wests Tigers.

Back-rower Dene Halatau – a veteran of 15 Tests for New Zealand – was as pleased with Tauapu's form as he was with New Zealand's third straight win over Australia.

"Marty had an immediate impact and he did that last year in the Four Nations as well, that was his role, he came on and really got them moving forward and was really aggressive and played a good style of footy," Halatau told NRL.com.

"He does it for us too, that's the way he's been for us. We know he's very valuable for us on the field because he puts a dent in the defensive line. He's very busy."

Halfback Luke Brooks also welcomed the platform Taupau's aggression has provided him and fellow young playmakers Mitch Moses and James Tedesco.

"Taupau was outstanding when he came on for the Kiwis, he got them rolling, then off the back of that they got a few tries," Brooks said.

"You need to have a bit of aggression in your forward pack. He's just playing awesome this year. It's good to play off the back of him, he gets some quick play the balls and in defence he's good as well."

Taupau is far from the only forward making an impact for the Tigers in 2015; Kangaroos prop Aaron Woods is easily the top metre-getter among props in the NRL, averaging 215 metres per game – 50 more than the next best prop, Cronulla's Andrew Fifita.

Sauaso Sue is having a breakout year, while Curtis Sironen and Kyle Lovett have made the edge back-rower roles their own and the understated Ava Seumanufagai also earned praise.

"These young guys coming through, guys like, Kyle Lovett, it's been great to see a guy like him [cement a first grade spot]," Halatau said.

"Every year since I came back he's worked hard in the pre-season, he's a great guy to be around, he's earned the spot in the team and he's doing great for us.

"Curtis Sironen, he's a talent, and he was rewarded with a City jumper on the weekend and he's doing really well for us.

"There's a couple of guys that don't get the mention, like Ava Seumanufagai, he's been really good, Jessie Sue's done a really good job, this is maybe his breakout year, he does a good job in every game and does all the little things really well and he's pretty hard to handle."

WESTS Tigers fans love it to just quietly…

Smash the Cock's on Friday MARTY...

Every forward has improved under Taylor so far

Sue and Ava have been underrated by many , hope they come out and give it to the shuttlecocks

Our forwards are looking good aren't they. We also haven't missed Blair at all. Taupau is definitely a better option at 13.

We haven't seen that rooster fan on here yet.. What's his name "cockfan" or "cockman" or something. He was quite entertaining last year.
As for the Tigers pack. They have been good this year, minus some moments when they have switched off in the second half. If they keep the concentration up and don't get hampered by injuries they can be one of the top packs in the comp. along with the Dogs. The Raiders are also big improvers. We are probably only one top quality second rower away from a complete pack. The Roosters have us in the 2nd row dept but we match them in every other forward position.

I think we'll be a lot better balanced with Lodge back on the bench also. Should enable us to keep that momentum. Our playmakers now need to capitalise on this now.

Love Marty, in my books he's quickly approaching the Gareth Ellis status of importance to our team.
Been our best buy in recent years.

We've been waiting a long time for someone with his level of determination…
To break through the ribs of opposition packs and climb out through their shoulder blades with blood in his eyes and their spine between his teeth...

what i love aside from his agression is his ability to run at the line, step sideways, fend a player and create a one on one or two on one which allows him to dominate the ruck, create metres after impact, quick play the ball and often an offload.

saw it numerous times for the kiwis on sunday. very effective because of his surprising speed/agility and his obvious strength.

he certainly can and does improvise.

a monumental loss for the Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs. They kept Klemmer.
Don't get me wrong - both players have aggression - both have demonstrated it this season - both were noticed.

Best buy for the club second to nobody. Love the passion and agresion.

A couple of weeks ago I copped a bit of criticism for saying that we needed controlled aggression on the field ,from our forwards , and pointed out the early part of last year when we had Tapau and Gavet coming off the bench and terrorising oppositions . Gavet unfortunately was a complete twit and went overboard on occasions and had average defence

There were a few who said that there was no place for that style of play.

Hope you saw Tapau rip australia apart last week, that's what I meant.
Someone who makes the opposition think twice before they put their body in front of one of his charges.
Someone who wants to dominate his opposition in attack and defence .
Be nice to find another prop of second row with the same attitude
Keep it up Marty. You lift a team every time you smash the line.

Definitely. I'm hoping Sue or Lodge can become his partner in crime for the remainder of the year at least.

he is a leader. Sue and Lodge will benefit from Taupau's attitude on and off the field.
I was listening to Ennis speak about him at the dogs. He said he had a young family and was very professional and quite off the field. Even though he was in NSW Cup he would train harder than the guys in 1st. He would spend twice as long in the gym. once the gym session was over, he's do it again.
With the amount of young guys at the WTs, we are very lucky to have someone with Taupau's attitude on and off the field.

Lol whoever disagreed or criticized that is no RL fan.

I don't know is anyone watched 360 on Tuesday but the wraps that both Ennis and Marshall gave Taupau were pretty big

Ennis said he has never seen anyone work harder in the gym and was talking about his 300 kg dead lift

He said that Taupau would start his second gym workout as many others were finishing their first

Benji said he was a gentle giant , one on the quietest and nicest fellas away from the game and gave heaps back to the fans

I was watching it and loved every minute of it !

Arguably the Wests Tigers best ever signing when you consider the value for money where getting out of him.

Love him :sign:
