I wouldnt leave Cherrington out of the equation either… I dont think its a coincidence that quicker service is playing a big part.

I hope Harry T was at the game with some mates and they all brought their checkbooks. We need to these guys on the books long term. Mind you they are only playing the way they are because of the Forwards. Tim Grant has surprised the hell out of me. I thought he was going to be a poor mans Keith Galloway but he is running hard and tackling hard. He still gives away the odd stupid penalty but hopefully this will settle down once the boys get a few games under their belts. Sue, Lawrence and Woods are playing great and so are Aloiai and Seumanufagai off the bench.

Agreed, the forwards really laid a platform with that hard running up the middle. Was pretty happy with the way most of the boys played.

I am hoping and also think that they will stay together as the benefits of doing so are pretty obvious. For mine all WT need to do is get within cooee of other offers from another club to tip the balance in our favour.

Set of Six: Let's hope money doesn't break up Luke Brooks, Mitchell Moses and James Tedesco

Luke Brooks, Mitchell Moses and James Tedesco again showed their brilliance against the Manly Sea Eagles on Monday night. The skill, speed and flair of these young players is a joy to watch and the combination they are forming is a dangerous one indeed.

How sad it will be for Tigers fans and for the game in general if this talented trio should ever be broken up because of salary cap and/or opportunity. I would also hope that these three lads understand that while money is important to a professional footballer, it is not the be all and end all of life.

By remaining together for the rest of their careers at the club that gave them their first opportunity, these youngsters could achieve something really special. If that means earning a few dollars less each year to ensure they have other quality players around them, then it's a small sacrifice to make.

If they are successful, the money will come in other ways. Changing clubs just to go to the highest bidder is not all it's cracked up to be.

Sure, it's up to Tigers management to understand the importance of these three boys as a combination and find the necessary funds to keep them together. But someone also has to explain to the boys the value of sticking together over time.

Very hard for any club to keep three or four top shelve players on there books and still have enough cap space to put a good team around them. The better we go the more the value of the next tier of players rises.

As I said in another post, every dollar over what they had planned to spend on the 6 and 7 (if they sign) will come out of another players contract. They also have to be in the position to have a real crack at Teddy when he next comes off contract because he will not come cheap

Interesting article from Gould, especially as he has been rumoured to be very interested in trying to get Moses to Penrith.

What he said is so true, stick together for a bit less, enjoy some real success, and the money will flow in from lots of other places. Hope they listen to Gus

It really isn't that hard. Look at the roster of the Broncos, Cowboys, Souths, Storm etc.

To do it you need to take full advantage of the loop hole of Third Party Agreements (TPAs). These allow you if used correctly within the guidelines to have a squad that is paid well above the Salary Cap.

For example if you pay Tedesco $700,000 a year but can put him in the cap at $400,000 and have the remaining $300,000 paid by TPA you can use that extra $300,000 under the Salary Cap on other players. Broncos have been doing this for years, lets you keep star players and have a better squad around them. It was rumoured that Darren Lockyer in his last contract at the Broncos was on close to $1,000,000 and year but in the salary cap at $350,000 with the rest TPA money.

We just need smart management to take advantage of TPAs, the young talent we have are marketable and it shouldn't be hard to do (actually if management can't do it we need better management). Believe me if any of them go to another club most of their money will be by way of TPAs. Yes I know club managements aren't meant to source TPAs for players but if you think other clubs aren't doing it you still believe in the tooth fairy.

Third party agreement is capped and at present is being overhauled and of course getting TPAs in a highly competitive Sydney market place is not easy especially when the economy is slowing down. Of course TPA's are a way of improving our chances of resigning these kids and I am sure that is what the club is looking at, but as I said the better the team goes the more expensive every player on the roster becomes. Take a player like Sue, if we make the eight and he keeps his form going, his price could nearly double because he is probably on modest money now. It has been happening to the Storm for years, they keep their spine but loose plenty players around them

Surely it's easier to hold onto your local juniors than it is to buy highly talented individuals. The likes of Melbourne , Broncos , Roosters Warriors have always gone and signed up a team of internationals. Through TPAs or however they do it …and we can't hold onto our juniors. There's is something seriously wrong with the game if that's the case.
How many good players have we had to let go over the past couple of seasons to assemble a team that most experts saw vying for the spoon.
Now that we are going ok the experts are saying we won't be able to hold onto a team that they saw getting the spoon.

I think any club can afford to keep 3 big names, and there is plenty of evidence:
Storm - Slater, Smith, Cronk
Souths - Inglis, Burgess, Reynolds
Sharks - Fifita, Graham, Gallen
Manly - DCE, Stewart, Lyon
Parra - Foran, Jennings, Norman
Dogs - Graham, Morris, Morris
Cowboys - Thurston, Taumalolo, Scott
Roosters - JWH, Pearce, Ferguson
Warriors - Johnson, RTS, Luke
Broncos - Milford, Boyd, Parker

The real issue becomes trying to fit in a fourth big name, the so-called "Big Four". Storm obviously did it by cheating, and if Parra are on the verge of having their own B4, they also apparently have broken the rules to do so. A few sides arguably have a B4 right now.

Regional sides will always have an advantage because some players will take less money to stay with their friends/family.

Right now we have our own big 3 - Tedesco, Woods and Farah. We know Farah is in the twilight of his career and his money will be going to Tedesco, mark that as a given. It is likely that Farah will finish up just as the money for a high-performing Brooks and/or Moses is needed.

2016 is probably the year that Tedesco becomes one of the game's elite players, especially if he plays Origin well this year (and barring injury I cannot see him not getting picked). There is plenty of argument that Tedesco should become Australia's fullback by the end of the year, with Slater injured, Hodges retired and a centre position open for Inglis.

Woods is only 25 and we would expect him to be a representative mainstay well into his next contract and perhaps beyond. I don't see him running out of steam for some years yet.

If both Brooks and Moses get to Teddy's level of consistent excellence, certainly we have a struggle on our hands. It's a big IF of course, but we've invested heavily in Moses and Brooks already, so as a club we already have expectations of them becoming big name players. Given the current weaknesses in NSW halves, it's not hard to picture Tigers trotting out the NSW #1, #6, #7 and #8 within 1-2 years. Heck, in 2016 alone we will probably have #1, #8 and #9 running out for NSW.

So if the best outcome happens and we develop the pre-eminent spine in the comp, there is going to have to be compromise or serious TPAs for this group to remain together. And personally, this is where we should already be positioning Uncle Harry and other well-financed backers to support the club. Forget sponsorship and the rest of that, if he or the Brydens guy are fair-dinkum supporters and not just in it for business-related perks, we ask them to prepare a number of brown paper bags to keep Tedesco, Moses, Brooks, Woods all together for the next 5-7 years.

We are in a tricky situation because Brooks / Moses have not really come on enough during this current contract to fully support the big bucks. Even renewing them now for another 3-4 years carries a fair amount of risk, and we will still be paying a lot of money for future potential. It's also not great having them both on/off contract at the same time, like having to pay rego and insurance on both your cars in the same month.

It's almost the reverse of the Lawrence situation, where he started off cheap then ramped up aggressively over several seasons. Brooks and Moses are already on serious coin, the question is how much more might they deserve and when do they get it? Do we try to keep them at the reported $600K for another season, with increases year-on-year, or triggers based on rep milestones?

Also another thing - I wonder now the potential tactical error of releasing Te Maire Martin this season.

I am all for releasing players who want to go elsewhere, or who have an offer we cannot match. Clubs cannot try to use the line of "stick together with your mates and the club that supported you as a junior" whilst ignoring the personal or career prospects of players.

However, if I have my timeline right, Martin was released before "Mooks" (I'm sick of calling Brooks and Moses - or should it be "Broses"?) decided to postpone their final-year option decision. We should not be shocked that they are testing their market value.

But the media says we have been sounding out backup half options like Benji and Blake Green, to cover ourselves in case one of these kids does decide to leave.

Had we kept Martin on the books just one more year, would this have already given us the backup / bargaining chip we now need? Would we be in a stronger position to negotiate with Mooks if Te Maire was working away in NSW Cup right now?

Or does releasing Martin play in our favour, showing our readiness to invest in Mooks at the expense of other juniors?

Certainly this topic gives great support to the comments of JT about releasing Taupau early. I expect that few hundred thousand is coming in VERY handy right now. It's not just "was Taupau worth big bucks as a dynamic forward in reduced interchange" but "was Taupau for 1 year worth losing Brooks or Moses?"

I, like quite a few Tigers fans, had quite a rap on Martin so at last year's coaches night I asked JT what he thought about him. He said straight up that it looked like the club was going to lose him. So even then there must have been substantial offers coming in for him. JT also said during the conversation that he thought Moses was a better player. He didn't go into detail and only time will tell if he is right but both are fine talents in their own right. There's no doubt that the club will do all they can to keep Mitchell & Luke, and I think they can help the club achieve something pretty special over the next 5-10 years, but in the end it's up to them if they want to stay or not.

Good Posts Jirskyr

Long and the short IMO is we cant fight the Cheats or the clubs with a significant Third Party Payment network such as the Broncos and Dogs who seem to have money to buy anyone they want.
