If Blues coach Laurie Daley is looking to plug a hole anywhere in his backline for Origin I, Wests Tigers fullback and City Origin winger James Tedesco says he's ready to go.

Tedesco has been one of the form players of the competition at the back for the Tigers but has Josh Dugan, Matt Moylan and Brett Stewart in front of him in the pecking order to replace Jarryd Hayne as NSW custodian.

However the 22-year-old speedster had a fine game on the wing for a losing City Origin side in Wagga on the weekend, scoring a try, making 91 metres with two line breaks, and making a team-high four tackle breaks.

He also played all three games in Italy's 2013 Rugby League World Cup campaign in the centres, and said he's played elsewhere in the backs before and would play anywhere Daley would pick him.

"If there's an opportunity anywhere in the backline I'd put my hand up," Tedesco said.

"If they need me anywhere I'll happily put my hand up and have a dig. I didn't mind it on the wing [for City], it's probably a bit different but I played a bit of juniors there and played a bit of first grade there so I didn't mind getting in there and having a dig.

"It was a good opportunity for me to play. Obviously we didn't get the win but it was a good week and I'll take a lot of experience out of that."

Tedesco also earned the backing of NSW prop and clubmate Aaron Woods.

"I think Teddy's been probably our best player, he's been probably the most consistent we've had so far. He's a good young kid and I think he'd be ready to play at any time," Woods said.

Tedesco has certainly added a new level of consistency to his game in 2015; he currently leads the competition for tackle breaks with 43 – well clear of Newcastle's Dane Gagai (36) – and his eight tries in eight games are just one behind frontrunners James Roberts and Curtis Rona.

While Daley still has plenty of players to choose from, the absences of Brett Morris, Josh Mansour and Blake Ferguson through injury, plus injury clouds over Josh Morris, Dylan Walker and Josh Dugan and form questions over others with Origin experience such as Will Hopoate and Dan Tupou all add up to put Tedesco in the frame.

His immediate task though is helping his side to a win over a desperate Roosters outfit coming off four straight losses, and Tedesco hopes his blossoming combination with the young playmakers at the Tigers will help.

"The more games we play together the better it's going to get," he said of his combination with halfback Luke Brooks and five-eighth Mitch Moses.

"Mitch and Brooksy, the more experience they get together playing and controlling games… they showed against the Bulldogs we can take control and not let games slip away like we have in the past and obviously Robbie [Farah]'s experience there is great for us. I think if we can stay on the park together it's going to get better and better."

Anthony Minichiello backs Wests Tigers' James Tedesco for NSW fullback spot

Former NSW fullback Anthony Minichiello believes James Tedesco is the man to grab the No.1 Blues jersey vacated by the departure of Jarryd Hayne.

While most of the selection speculation has been on Laurie Daley's halves pairing, fullback is another key position up for grabs before the side is named for the series opener. Daley has indicated the most likely candidates for the custodian spot are Josh Dugan, Matt Moylan and Brett Stewart, although the good form of Tedesco at Wests Tigers makes him a dark horse.

Dugan suffered a knee injury playing on the wing in the Anzac Test, with the Dragons naming Peter Mata'utia at fullback for their clash with South Sydney on Monday. Dugan could also be a candidate for a centre spot, a position he filled in last year's interstate series. Moylan has injury problems of his own but has been named to play against Brisbane on Friday despite fracturing his hand and dislocating his fingers. The absence of Hayne, who is pursuing his NFL dream, robs the Blues of arguably their best and most explosive player.

Minichiello, who represented the Blues on nine occasions during an illustrious career which included premiership success and the Golden Boot award, believes Tedesco is the man to line up opposite Maroons veteran Billy Slater.

"The guy that I feel has been in the best form has been Tedesco," Minichiello said. "Whether or not the selectors want to try someone new in a key position in a big series where the boys want to win two in a row, that's the decision for them. Definitely he could do the job. He's been injury-free this year and looks fit."

Minichiello has had the opportunity to play alongside Tedesco when the pair combined at Test level for Italy. The experience left the Roosters legend convinced the 22-year-old has the grit and talent required to excel at the highest level. "I played with him in the Italian squad and he's a great kid," Minichiello said. "He played in the centres and killed it there as well."

A cruel run of knee injuries have restricted Tedesco to just 36 games since he made his NRL debut in 2012\. However, he has shown no ill-effects upon his return and can further state his case for selection against the Roosters on Friday.

Tigers coach Jason Taylor has said Tedesco isn't ready for an Origin call-up but Blues assistant coach and City mentor Brad Fittler said he was "impressive" and "did some great things" at the traditional Origin trial at Wagga Wagga.

I think if we lose Tedesco Woods and Farah for 3 games over origin we will really struggle to make the finals this year. So i'm hoping he doesn't make it.

So we will lose Robbie, Woods, and now teddy
With the outside chance of Brooks as well.
With Simona out injured.
The game against the Cowboys, we will be missing some key players

Good luck to all of them.

Realistically, I would only bank on Farah & Woods being selected as Teddy will have a few in front of him to contend with, however if all those backs mentioned in the article with injury concerns are all out he may make just squeak into the squad.

Considering we play 3 games this year during origin I hope none get picked. Michael Ennis should be picked over Farah :stuck_out_tongue: and gal can play front row with Tamou

Watched the City Country game again today and it was something I noticed watching it live and the replay just reaffirmed it but Moylan really seemed a bit lazy in defence at times and didn’t want to put his body on the line to stop a try.

Never noticed how he defends in Panthers games but that might be because I really haven’t seen too many Penrith games recently.

We play Cowboys, Bunnies and Eels
Thurston and Inglis will be massive outs for the Cows and Bunnies.

Will be a good opportunity for the youngsters to stand up and prove their worth.

He might put his hand up to play but I doubt he would get picked if he puts a few years together and stays in form I'm sure he will get a call up but won't be this year and prob not next year unless he is playing out of his skin
