Regardless of anything else TPJ is a player we identified as one we wanted, publicly courted him and ultimately missed out on to the wooden spooners.

It’s another embarrassment for the club to go on top of a growing pile of them.

I don’t think it is an embarrassment at all. We put a value on TPJ of what he was worth to the club and that’s what we offered. Another club thought he was worth more and made their offer and so he went there instead.

I for one am glad we are no longer paying overs just to get someone. Instead we place a value on their worth to the club and that’s what we offer. The player either accepts that offer or goes elsewhere. I am very happy with that process.

You missed the part where we publicly pulled out of the race to sign him and then later made contact again with his agent to renew our interest only to have him turn us down flat for the wooden spooners offering the same money.

If you don’t think thats embarrassing for the club then we’ll agree to differ.

For me shambolic doesn’t even cover it.

Don't actually know any of that to be true. Too many folks listen to the papers like gospel.

Lee at one point said something along the lines of "move in another direction". Didn't say anything unequivocal about ceasing all negotiations or re-starting. That was paper talk only.

I welcome anyone to produce a direct quote from the that confirms anything else about negotiations with TPJ.

i can't post the interview from the SEN website
The SEN interview with Andrew Voss on 7 July he mentions
there were discussions with respect to provisions of a contract.

“But there was no formal offer put on the table.”

So we "moved in another direction" and "no formal offer was put on the table". Is that the sum total of public Tigers commentary about TPJ?

so we moved in another direction then a week later we make him another offer, we look like amateur hour

No no no... where is the confirmation from the club that we made him another offer? I am being told this was all apparently played out in public, I want the combined might of the WT Forum to post everything the Tigers said on record about the TPJ discussions.

ok mate you believe we didn't make an offer then
just like we didn't make an offer to Latrell or JAC

I'll take that as confirmation that you don't have further quotes from Tigers.

listen to the interview then comment
I'll take it by your comment you have no idea

Here are the quotes:
>“There were discussions between the club Tevita’s representatives,” the Chairman said.
>
>“There was no formal offer.
>
>“But there were discussions with respect to provisions of a contract.
>
>“But there was no formal offer put on the table.”
>
>“The club, as it does with all potential opportunities on the market, considered Tevita and decided to move in a different direction.

The whole point of the discussion is people getting embarrassed by reports that Tigers abandoned negotiations, then were drawn back in to make counter-offers. I haven't seen this confirmed by anyone at the club.

You jump in to say that Lee said something, I've now gone the trouble of pulling the quotes, and all he says is they spoke to the manager. Doesn't explain why Tigers "moved on". In fact he says, verbatim, they did not make a formal offer.

That's the only thing I am aware of Tigers making public about the negotiations with Tevita Pangai.

so the three wise men flew to Brisbane for nothing then a few weeks back

I don't get what your point is. Nobody is trying to say Tigers were never interested in TPJ or never spoke to him. Lee confirmed we were interested and had spoken to him. Madge confirmed we were interested.

Anything else within that context, any "ebb and flow", any talks, any visits, negotiations, offers, dollar values... nothing confirmed, all just speculation. If you want to spend your time hanging your hat on speculation, go for it. If you want to get your knickers in a twist about what the papers are saying, go for it. But at least be self-aware enough to accept that the newspapers WANT you to get your knickers in a twist, they are trying to get a reaction from you.

Lee should not have said they we were moving in another direction then we change our mind and offer it is unprofessional

Why

Agree... Do you know if we are chasing anyone else mate ??

Get a sense of deja by reading threads like this. The moment we hear of a potential named signing it’s all I hope we get him.

The moment we it’s not we dodged a bullet, or he’d be a mistake etc.

Can’t wait to see the reaction when we land a name of a good player we’ve actually been linked to.

Onto the next one..

TBH no one else worth going for

I just did a quick count up for the dogs salary cap for next year and they are ALL IN and hoping no injuries or big suspensions occur as they will be in trouble.
12 of there players salaries are about 6.3 -6.6 mil and will need to have the rest of the 30 into the remaining 3mil. Madness and that's with no real fullback and hooker.
I am very surprised Gus didn't jump in and and talk them out of the TPJ as that's a big salary for a guy with questions..
JAC,TPJ, Corey Allen, Burton, Cotric, Flanagan, Hetherington, Josh Jackson, Luke Thompson, Adam Elliot, Waddall, Stimson, Naden and also paying some of DWZ salary.

I wonder if the NRL looks at this and say's hey guys you are going to have most of your team on min wage..

As much as I wanted TPJ here I am comfortable with us not paying stupid money and putting us in a bad position like the dogs are going to be in 2 years.

That’s the issue isn’t it - we have repeatedly done this stuff out in the open for no reason. As a result the media coverage and speculation jumps up another gear, and the fan expectation is raised as well. Thus the letdown is all the more heartfelt in turn.

The player managers put it out in the media. Clubs don't do it on purpose, none of them do. All clubs would keep it perfectly quiet if they could, but player managers use the media to try and manipulate dealings with clubs, put pressure on clubs.

There will always be stories written, and you're right that the agents will be the ones feeding the majority. But our chairman has commented publicly on all three of these now, when he really didn't need to say anything.

I don't see that it matters whether Lee makes comments or not. Is anyone trying to say that the number of anti-Tigers articles has gone up since Lee got involved? That people weren't calling Tigers a basket-case way before Lee was Chairperson? Were Tigers consistently signing high-profile recruits in the pre-Lee era?

The only thing I can see is some fans get embarrassed when someone like Lee makes a statement. wrt TPJ, Lee didn't even say anything spectacular, he just said Tigers had discussions and had moved in another direction. I don't see any disadvantage for saying something like this, considering it was all through the media - I don't think anyone believed Tigers were not talking to TPJ.

But some fans seem to get triggered, as if it makes a difference whether or not Lee admits something. Now the day he comes out and says "oh boy we are going to sign TPJ for sure", then yes that's a stupid comment. I don't think Lee has had his "Manchester United of the NRL" moment yet. But the guy is a lawyer, for all his reported ego or enjoyment getting into the public eye, he knows how to qualify his comments.

So if Lee says nothing ever, I still don't believe Tigers end up signings Latrell, JAC or TPJ. Those negotiations were based on money and opportunity, not on Lee Hagipantelis.

This isn't difficult stuff.

You make no comment to the media regarding players contracted to other clubs until you have their signature on a legally binding document.

Anything else is completely unprofessional.

Why is it unprofessional? I can't get to the bottom of what your issue is, apart from personal embarrassment.

In any recruitment process the privacy of all parties involved needs to be respected. Negotiations are difficult and intricate and public comment can easily jeopardize this at any point.

Its got nothing to do with personal embarrassment but if you don't think the chairman saying we are moving in another direction only to go back to the agent with another offer is a bad look for the club then I guess your expectations are different to mine.

To turn it round slightly what is to be gained from the chairman making public pronouncements like this?

Just another nail in NRL's coffin for me. I don't say how it's ethical for Penrith to play TPG for a few games and then the finals. I realise it's contractually legitimate, I just think it's in the real spirit of the game however old-fashioned that view may be.

Looking forward to us playing them. I'm sure Luc and Garner will have no issues with TPJ and Kikau.

We'd be cheering like mad if we were Penrith fans. We're only annoyed because we're constantly getting shat on from all directions.

No, I wouldn't. I don't think it's ethical. I don't care who does it, I don't agree with it.
