You can do all the sugar coating you like, but once again we miss out on a big signing. It happens every time and it’s not like we missed out to a top four team. It’s basically a PR disaster as it just gives the media more mud to throw at us. It also makes it even harder to attract a big name next time.

Anyway we are going to be in great shape to pick up a fringe FG when teams start discarding unwanted players for salary cap reasons.

Firstly, don't worry about the media. Basically they're right anyway, we did botch negotiations. But it's nothing to be too sensitive about.

As for Cleary signing TPJ, I don't think I'd make this move mid-year if I were coach. I feel like the team cohesion is built on working together throughout the year and then someone comes in and takes a role who hasn't worked with the team and earnt the trust. Not saying it was SBWs fault last year, but the roosters lost all form after he joined them, and they were red hot before then. I think it just throws things out. Someone else mentioned the NBA where players signed on halfway through the year for the Nets and they had a stacked roster and couldn't even make the final.

Anyway, it might work out great for them, it looks good on paper, I just would tend towards loyalty and putting contract money into the already elite team rather than let everyone know in your team that they weren't quite good enough and need someone else to come in and help. Even if there are injuries, you'd want to give someone the opportunity to be a part of it who is likely to be at the club long term. But loyalty isn't Cleary's strong suit.

That’s the issue isn’t it - we have repeatedly done this stuff out in the open for no reason. As a result the media coverage and speculation jumps up another gear, and the fan expectation is raised as well. Thus the letdown is all the more heartfelt in turn.

The player managers put it out in the media. Clubs don't do it on purpose, none of them do. All clubs would keep it perfectly quiet if they could, but player managers use the media to try and manipulate dealings with clubs, put pressure on clubs.

There will always be stories written, and you're right that the agents will be the ones feeding the majority. But our chairman has commented publicly on all three of these now, when he really didn't need to say anything.

I don't see that it matters whether Lee makes comments or not. Is anyone trying to say that the number of anti-Tigers articles has gone up since Lee got involved? That people weren't calling Tigers a basket-case way before Lee was Chairperson? Were Tigers consistently signing high-profile recruits in the pre-Lee era?

The only thing I can see is some fans get embarrassed when someone like Lee makes a statement. wrt TPJ, Lee didn't even say anything spectacular, he just said Tigers had discussions and had moved in another direction. I don't see any disadvantage for saying something like this, considering it was all through the media - I don't think anyone believed Tigers were not talking to TPJ.

But some fans seem to get triggered, as if it makes a difference whether or not Lee admits something. Now the day he comes out and says "oh boy we are going to sign TPJ for sure", then yes that's a stupid comment. I don't think Lee has had his "Manchester United of the NRL" moment yet. But the guy is a lawyer, for all his reported ego or enjoyment getting into the public eye, he knows how to qualify his comments.

So if Lee says nothing ever, I still don't believe Tigers end up signings Latrell, JAC or TPJ. Those negotiations were based on money and opportunity, not on Lee Hagipantelis.

This isn't difficult stuff.

You make no comment to the media regarding players contracted to other clubs until you have their signature on a legally binding document.

Anything else is completely unprofessional.

How embarrassing for Penrith, apparently, to claim in public that they weren't going to sign TPJ and it made no sense, and a few hours later they've signed the bloke. How embarrassing, why does Brian Fletcher feel the need to comment in public when the deal isn't done yet? Not professional.

>Panthers CEO Brian Fletcher told Channel Nine the club did talk to Pangai Jr's agent several weeks ago but no deal was made.
>
>"He is a quality player but it made no sense," he said.
>
>"We have an excellent roster."
>
>However, reports emerged today that the deal was back on, with both teams juggling salary to ensure they stay under the salary cap.
>
>The Broncos have so far declined to confirm the arrangement.

Wests Tigers save a roster spot for this sort of play, we usually just upgrade a reserve grader when it doesn’t come to fruition. I agree with you, lock in your squad early and back the guys who’ve been there from day one.

Exciting times as a tigers supporter lmao

Who is next

Zac Lomax
Hudson Young
Joe Tapine

???

✅✅✅
Lomax can flat out play, would have been an origin centre this year if he wasn't injured.
I thought we should have targeted young right after the raiders got CHN.
Tapine would slot straight into our backrow and offers some real play making ability.

Lomax would be a great acquisition of us, I really like Tapine but againts the Sharks he had a bad arm grab on Ramien and was really lazy ib cover defence when Mulitalo scored.

Sounds like the perfect signing he will fit right in ?

In all seriousness though I like Tapine and think he would add to the team but he would just be another young bloke to add to the pack.

Lomax is miles ahead of our centres.

Watch the highlights of the Raiders V Sharks game and look at Tapine's effort.

We should go hard at Lomax problem is his under contract and we can't even talk to him for a couple of years.

That's twice now the dogs have gotten the better of us in negotiations. They seem to come in late and land the signature.

I honestly think we need a shake up at CEO level. Something needs to change.

He can always agitate a release if it's as bad as being mentioned.

Could become toxic for him if the other players are bullying.

He'd look great at the tigers.

Still don't have a decent 9 and they have Dufty their fullback ... for 1 years.

Re-signing a lot of their dud players too.
Terrible spine.

They've managed to squeeze in a lot of good signatures. Cotric, JAC, Burton, TPJ... They're doing better than us.

But the bigger issue is that TPJ and JAC BOTH had tigers as their preference originally. How the heck we botched them is beyond me.

What has the CEO got to do with it?

hopefully moving forward Sheens and Hartigan along with Madge can get the deals over the line for our next negotiations.
Leave Lee out if it and tell him say nothing to the media

Should be nothing.

Trouble is he meddles in recruitment and puts his name on all the press releases. Also calls himself the boss.

Lomax is good and I'd be happy to have him but zero chance he would have played Origin.

Mitchell and Turbo are streets ahead of him - he's not in the same postcode.

100% correct.
Lee should just worry about getting his mates to pack the paper bags full of "TPA's" for new signings and keep his mouth shut.

Cotric has been beyond ordinary this season TBH. He's been like a more expensive version of BJ Leilua. Same with Corey Allen. Will be very interesting to see how their other recruits go next year.

Agreed, I get a sick feeling for what the future holds when we blatantly dumb .. might as well communicate our recruitment intentions on a billboard for all clubs to see ... by Pascoe’s own admission (in Tales From Tiger Town) he never gets stressed regardless of how bad things get — I’d prefer someone that can stress, it normally involves a response to the issue.
