It will take more than one good player to bring success - and players know that better than anyone.
We need more than one - which is what the Bulldogs seem hellbent on doing - however the pressure that puts on their cap if it doesn't work will set them backwards again.
From the outside looking in I'm not sure many players would be brave enough to take this on - when they don't need to.
We have to build from within like Penrith and then hopefully they will come when they can see some quality to play beside.

Bulldogs are digging their own grave by throwing large amounts of money at a few players. They may get a very slight lift for a little while(1 year) but in the long run they will be in an even worse position than they are now.Quick fixes do not work you have to build from your base like Hartigan has started to do with us

I think the Bulldogs will end up like Manly and have lopsided roster but not have Turbo to counter that.

both agree and disagree. Juniors is our actual way out but unless we also get a big fish who can convince other players that were a good club any talented juniors we develop will leave as they start to excel and we will remain stuck in a rut.

According to some on here we didn't miss Signing him as we "pulled out" fact is another player who did not want to come here.
I am glad we missed him at the price

"TPJ is said to prefer the Tigers or Dragons over the dogs", if this in fact true, then we didn't miss him, he just wanted more than we wanted to pay? If you look at the dogs, they will be in serious trouble if they don't fire from the get go?

we did miss him we made an offer he didn't take it he went elsewhere that is missing the purchase

IMO Tigers have pulled out of negotiations because TPJ management have raised the $$$ to high and then leaked to media that they are clearly out so that TPJ management cant use Tigers as a wedge in future negotiations. Its a signal to Bulldogs and Dragons

If that’s the case, then it would be very courteous of WT to be so concerned about the cap management of other clubs. But also would highlight the sheer depth of our despair with recruitment.

Teams don’t win comps. Clubs do. Until management etc is in a good place we will never reach out potential.

That is why we have to look to development, keep trying to get the big fish. What is important though is to get the right experienced players to match our youth. Remember Sheens old saying of you are not an NRL player until you have played 100 games. We need to target the right players around that 150 game mark.

Not sold on the notion that if a player of TPJ's calibre signed with WT then other players off contract would see us as a good destination.
Re: TPJ, apart from the game where he took Taumalolo out with a tackle that mashed his leg has he ever done anything noteable? I think he is very much more hype than substance. Not fussed at all that he isn't coming to WT.
We need effort players to turn our club around.

Good to see we have rejected Pangai. Just like we rejected Mitchell & JAC when they would not roll over and agree to what the tigers had offered.

It is the fish that wests reject that make them the (12th to 16th) best.

We are a basket case, our signing will again consist of who other clubs need to get rid of after signing the top available talent.

Disagree, we had the money for all 3 players you mentioned, the fact they didn't want our offer is on them.

Money is nearly always the issue, except for perhaps LM, we offered the money ($1m) and the position (FB) that he wanted, but he wanted to go to Souths, there is nothing you can do.

Latrell would still be getting the same money we offered him from Souths......just outside the salary cap. Rusty would be looking after him off the books you can be certain.
Paul Kent said as much the other day "I don't think Latrell took a pay cut to go to Souths" during a conversation with Big Dry Crawley when Crawley was having a dig at WT for missing out on targetted players.

TPJ is too inconsistent to break the bank on.

I get Harvey's post but the reality is we have to operate like a professional business. We can't keep making the same mistakes with our salary cap. We also can't be used as a bargaining chip for managers.

It looks like the way things are at the moment managers get our best offer and then use that to get their player signed on a bit extra at another club. We gotta keep going for quality players. It costs us nothing. It costs other clubs money though.

I hope the tiger's haven't pulled out of the negotiations. I'm hoping they're being creative and trying to work with TPJ and his management to get the deal across the line. That's the ideal negotiation, both parties leaving happy.

The tigers have been creative lately eg Harry Grant, so maybe they're thinking of ways to incentives TPJ. I definitely don't want to pay $700k for the current TPJ, but he certainly has the ability to be worth that much.

Going on past experience, I would say you are bang on

According to some on here we didn't miss Signing him as we "pulled out" fact is another player who did not want to come here.
I am glad we missed him at the price

"TPJ is said to prefer the Tigers or Dragons over the dogs", if this in fact true, then we didn't miss him, he just wanted more than we wanted to pay? If you look at the dogs, they will be in serious trouble if they don't fire from the get go?

we did miss him we made an offer he didn't take it he went elsewhere that is missing the purchase

this happens to Tigers all the time
they better land Funucane and or Brandon Smith

No we didn't miss him, we made an offer, he wanted more, we moved on without further negotiation.

Are they after Finucane or Smith?

It’s all paper dribble until it’s official.. we might be fighting fire with fire - also known as doing a Bar

IMO Tigers have pulled out of negotiations because TPJ management have raised the $$$ to high and then leaked to media that they are clearly out so that TPJ management cant use Tigers as a wedge in future negotiations. Its a signal to Bulldogs and Dragons

The door is closed.

But. have they locked it and thrown away the key ?

Good to see we have rejected Pangai. Just like we rejected Mitchell & JAC when they would not roll over and agree to what the tigers had offered.

It is the fish that wests reject that make them the (12th to 16th) best.

We are a basket case, our signing will again consist of who other clubs need to get rid of after signing the top available talent.

The problem is when the youngsters we bring through show ability, other clubs start chasing and these blokes have not played finals football or made rep teams and see a squad full of fringe first graders and youngsters that are a few years off contending, they will move on. We then replace them with more youngsters, fringe first graders and players at the end of their careers. Rinse and repeat the cycle will continue.

We have seen it before. There are no transfer fees in the NRL, so being a development and feeder club for heavyweights is not a business model that works.

I disagree. We need to unearth a bunch of good young kids and just keep adding them into the first grade team. Melbourne do the same thing.

I'd love us to sign a marquee player but it has to be on fair dollar. We can't seem to do that. We gotta though keep trying to get fair value out of our players. The problem with overpaying is that it's a losing model as well.
