"That really grinds my gears"

A new one thats starting to annoy me…

People Calling this symbol # a hashtag.
NO, its just a hash.

When you use it on social media along with a word then the whole thing is a hashtag, but # is just a hash.

People who want to father younger people online. Like no stick to fathering your own kids if you can get any.

Might be getting a bit pedantic but I get really annoyed when people say 'much' instead of 'many'.
Eg. "There are so 'much' people". No, there are so 'many' people.

Have to agree with the you'se and West Tigers ones as well, they drive me mental too!

it was embarassing that i used to call # as number until a year ago

People sometimes struggle with spelling which doesn't bother me, but not showing someone respect by using a capital for their name annoys me

my internet grammar is terrible, especially from my phone when watching TV….I make all the mistakes people have mentioned on here I'm sure

People who think language is set in stone and doesn't change and evolve over time.

Usage is the final arbiter of these things.

Example.

100 years ago Ejaculate meant to exclaim. "He ejaculated loudly from his 2nd storey window" .

and people who get annoyed at words like "Chillax", Portmanteau between chill and relax, who will happily go on and use words like 'Meld' which is a Portmanteau of melt and weld.

People who hijack words like "gay".

I'm an absolute grammar nazi. Everything mentioned annoys the crap out of me.

Aside from grammar, one of my pet peeves is the sound of people chewing/eating. I work in a fairly 'cosy' office space and a lot of people eat at their desk. It is torture for me haha. We also have a few rogue sniffers too… Disgusting.

The one that gets me is the misuse of the words 'me' and 'I'.

It was seen as dumb to say something like "Matt and me went to the game", so people decided to change it to "Matt and I went to the game", which is correct. But then they started saying I instead of me when it was wrong. "Do you want to go next week with Matt and I?".

Grrrrrr!!!

Someone told me the correct word to use in the first sentence is "myself"

For all intensive purposes.

Lol I used to say that up until fairly recently - felt like a real goose when I realised what it really was! And I have a degree and a post grad - not in English obviously

Away from the topic of words and grammar for a moment, something that really grinds my gears is water saving shower heads - it's like being piddled on from a great height and it doesn't end up saving me anymore water cause I have to spend so much extra time in the shower running around trying to get the bloody soap off!

you do know that in alot of cases you can remove the water saving washer… its basically a fine tea strainer mesh in a plastic ring. Most can be easily accessed by removing the shower head from the wall and locating it just inside...

I do now, thanks for the tip

Affect vs effect - in the majority of cases,

Effect is a noun. eg "What is the effect of this".
Affect is a verb. eg "This could affect the result".

I remember it by the acronym NEVA - Noun Effect, Verb Affect.

Note though, that effect can also be a verb on some occasions. eg "The coach was able to effect change in the team".

Another one people often get wrong is practice vs practise.

Practice is a noun. eg "We need more practice".
Practise is a verb. eg "We need to practise this".

It is exactly the same as advise and advice. But because of the different pronunciation, most people get this one right.

the misuse of these is rife on this site! i too am a grammar nazi, and have to refrain from correcting people. but there are SO many of these (this?! :wink🙂 that just drive me nuts.

i know it sounds a bit cynical, but seriously, if people were (another one! people "that' - grrrrrrr!!) to put in a little time to improve their diction im sure they would be taken more seriously.

okay, so i rarely use capitals and apostrophes. but at least i know when to!

people! an apostrophe denotes possession or is used in place of a letter/s.

here are some off the top of my head:

people THAT

HIS playing well… NO!!!! its HE IS or HE'S dammit!!!

i SEEN that...

he is BEEN stupid (instead of being)...

definately always used instead of DEFINITELY.

the omnipresent misuse and confusion of there, their and they're! were, we're and where...

ughh. i have to stop.

these really grind my gears... glad there is somewhere to express this! thanks.
