The Benji as a senior player era

Apart from the first round, Reynolds has been better than Benji all year. Can't work out why he is there

Well, Reynolds did get suspended for that kick to Graham's head in the Bunnies game. But yes, he's been the better option.

I can see the team reacts to Reynolds energy & attitude. It stopped after the Bunnies game. Sure, we beat the Broncos, but who hasn't beaten a dead horse? With Benji in the team, we have become a dead horse getting beaten over & over & over again.

Benji needs to come out and state this is his last season he is retiring. Then we all can say farewell in a dignified manor and saviour the last few games of the greatest player that has worn a Weststigers jersey !

We have played 5 good games this year - Cowboys, Dogs , Penrith, Raiders and Broncos - Reynolds/Brooks were the halves combo in the 1st 4 and everyone has smashed the Broncos so it doesent really count

Thats definitely the end of any 2021 conversation re Benji...but Brooks has absolutely nothing either other than turning the ball inside with a telegraphed pass to a forward at standstill. What do these guys do at training??
Dunno where to go from here, but Reynolds a shoe in for one halves spot

I think Brooks feels intimidated to take control of a team when there are legends on the field with him, eg, Benji or Farrah.

I've heard rumours that Robbie would overrule Moses & Brooks years ago to the point Moses said he's out of here.

With Brooks & Reynolds in our halves, we lost to the no 1 team in the comp by 7 points in a poorly refereed game, only conceding the 7 points in the last 5 mins of the game. But the team attitude was something to be proud of. And we've gone away from that.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. He couldn't consistently get us to the finals when he was 25, I don't know why Cleary, Maguire and Pascoe thought/think he could at 35.

Thanks for the memories Benji, but enough is enough.

Your post is spot on...and I hate to say all this, but it is true.

He could not do these things in his prime...he was always massively inconsistent as a senior player and the club has followed suit.

You have Thurston Cronk Smith 9 / 10 guys weekly. You have Benji 9/10 once a month.

You have Blake Green 7 out of 10 every week.

And then you have Benji's "off games" three times a month 3/10 style.

We have needed a steady 7/10 style half there for ages and let the team develop consistency. Sadly has not happened.

This is probably the saddest thing about Benji's legacy. On his day he could do things that Thurston, Cronk, Lockyer etc couldn't dream of doing. But on his worst, he couldn't do basic things that guys like Jeff Robson, Josh McCrone or as you said Blake Green could, like throwing a normal cut out pass or finding touch off a penalty kick, or even building pressure with a repeat set and not drilling it dead.

I'll always love Benji and I'm grateful we got to watch him in his prime at our club. But it's time to walk off into the sunset Benji.

I said it in the live thread, it's off to the glue factory for Benji.

The team comes before pride.

He’s always been a rock and diamonds, hit or miss player. One of the most talented players ever but somehow couldn’t find one repeat set all game.

He needs to rack off now

Can't believe I'm saying it but it just needs to happen

All he offers is a couple of tries a game to the opposition and relentless 7 tackle sets

If he feels intimidated after 7 years I 1st grade it's not going to change in the next 6 years

Bye bye Brooks

Benji has said on 360 all year that he'll give it away when his body can't do what his mind wants it to. That missed tackle for the Ese'ese ( I think) try at the end tells me it can't. He won't play again next year.

When Ponga ran around him with ease to score that try.

He retired Benji right then and there.

If Benji had even the slightest feeling of playing on it disappeared at that moment.

I think Benji is starting to feel his age - looks tired - but there is a brain there, unlike Brooks ...
Reynolds looked like the Cheshire Cat up there in the coaches box behind Madge, maybe Madge had slipped him the ‘ticket to ride’ next week already.

Yeah I think you're right. He's still quick between the ears but the body has had enough, and to be fair given the shoulder injuries he had early on in his career, he's done extremely well to have a career like the one he has had. I think in his mind he knows it is time to go.

I hope you are right and nobody has done more in giving the club the profile we have but his time is up.I dont want him leaving the wrong impression in peoples minds because he keeps on playing.I want him remembed for his golden years between 2004-2012 not the dross he has dished up most of the time since 2018

if Benji Marshall plays in the National Rugby League in 2021 then it is clear that we as a club and as an organisation have accepted mediocrity as the best we can do. it hurts to write given he was mine and just about everyone elses childhood hero, but he's just not up to it anymore.
