The "Best Backrow in the NRL"

Watching the highlights of the weekend games makes evident to me something I already knew, and what most people know.

Your back row needs to be lethal runners of the ball. Have a look at every game and some big back rower is charging onto the ball close to the line and barging over. Unfortunately for us, we have noone. Ellis, Heighno, Blair offer nothing. Fulton is ok at this, but more a whole runner obviously not a big charging back rower. Anasta is not going to help this issue at all either. In the past we have Dwyer who was obviously good at it.

You really need these big runners on each side of the field to give you options close to the line. We get close to the line and I just can't help but think, how the hell are we going to score?

The other teams have structure that provides the lead up to a big fringe runner hitting the ball at speed. (eg - Hoffman's try last night)

Occasionally, WT get it right and Fulton scores. But more often than not, Benji runs back and forth like a headless chook whilst our runners stand there scratching their heads.

This is also the reason our centres are not performing. They need a plan- we appear to have no set plays at all, except the Moltzen up the middle and the done to death blind side play.

Time to adopt short passing forward pack, as the dogs do. Encouraging players to utilise short passing at the very least encourages increased movement of players as they all push up together in support.

BMM is one of those big burly ball runners. Just doesn't get enough game time

The problem is they need to hit BMM with the ball on the advantage line for him to be effective

Usually the passes are too deep for him to be effective

Expecting him to play a big role next year, Moors has also proven himself a strong runner of the ball in the last few games

we used to be a forward pack that threw the ball around couple of seasons ago, ok it wasnt structured like the bulldogs but even thats been phased out of our game.

The ideal way to play BMM would be to hit him flat off the second reciever running an angle in the opposition redzone

Then it gives Marshall 3 (make that 4 options )

He hits the front man (BMM)

Takes the line on himself at SPEED BENJI

Marshall recieves the ball back in a run around play with BMM

Or hits the second man usually Lawrence or the fullback (hopefully Teddy) which opens the field up with an overlap or worse case scenario man on man which can lead to a second angled runner or for someone to play outside in

That is when the Tigers become an absolutely scary attacking weapon

Wasn't this what we did well and achieved a lot of success in 2005?

Remember at the start of the season when we apparently had the best backrow in the NRL?

All positions need to be coached better. Our current way is not effective but we still persist.Mr Sheens does it his way.The game has changed but what does that matter. :rant

A major part of the problem is Marshall not taking the line on. If the only option is a back-rower hitting the ball the opposition figure that out pretty quick and our guys are under all sorts before they even catch the ball.
