The best football brain

I wonder how Gus would go coaching in this day and age though

He hates the new ways of the game as he has stated many times during games

He has proven he is very adaptive creature , but if he wasn't going to let his players get involved in the wrestle etc , could he find another way of being competitive ??

good question.

I think the best football brain was Ron Massey he was the brain behind jack gibson and others and don't know if he ever played the game

It is what type of football brain your talking about administration or onfield …Gould admin yes onfield meathead .
Reading the posts many mentioned are definitely good footy brains, but having followed one player from the start of his career my choice would be our coach JT he had a real brain for the movement of the game and the reading of the game in progress.

We have had many onfield football brains over the years , but very few make good coaches

If you want to see how much work goes into being a coach , read Gould's book Good as Gould

He can spend around 16 an hours a day during the season making out game plans

Cam Smith

One of the most overrated players of all time

KS , you are completely off the mark with this call

I have never seen a bloke take the right options at the right times as much as Cam Smith

Better than Lewis or Sterling

A lot of the praise that Smith gets for his decisions, should be going to the real brains in that team, and while I hate giving a Qlder a wrap , Imo. Cronk is the main brains behind the Storm and has been for a long while. most of the big calls that are made are his.
While I wouldn,t put Cronk up as the best football brain , he is certainly up there with them.
When hes not there, the difference it makes is very noticeable.
As was shown in the last SOO series, where Smith came back to the field without him, and was very little danger to the opposition
Not saying that hes not a good player , but the sainthood that has been placed on him is sometimes not deserved (Thats only an opinion)

This is a good question… This is where I rate players like Hastings, Sterling & Johns as being very astute and above there peers.

Out of today's players, the best running around the NRL today is Jared Mullen.

Sterling himself has said he would make a terrible coach.

He also has confessed he doesnt fully grasp the intricacies of the modern game.

He makes the simple sound astute, and makes the casual observer feel like they are an expert.

I agree alot with this, everyone always down plays Cronk's ability saying he rides on Smith's skirt tails, I think they both benefit from each other.

Cronk calls every system, and every play in the system, he tells smith which segment on wants the ball played on the attacking play. Smith is very good at implementing this, and is terrific at getting his forwards across the line. It must be noted Smith benefits greatly from Cronk.

Cronk is the best organiser I have ever seen, and is machine like with his options. He lacks the brilliance of a Johns or Thurston, but if you wanted to teach a kid to play half, you'd mould them on cronk.

Ben Ikin is one of the best minds I have chatted with, Justin Morgan another.

On field, Cronk, Taylor and Ricky stand out for me.

Coaching Bellemy, Warren Ryan stand out. Dessie must be great, but he keeps it to himself, so it is hard to tell.

And that's what would of made Sterlo a good coach Goose

He is too happy playing golf , being a dad and a commentator than to stress himself out with coaching

Sterlo was my first thought when I read the thread title.

Brilliant player.

When he bagan calling games after retiring, he would often predict what would happen three tackles before hand…reads a game like very few
