The best player you've ever seen

It would be a toss up between Johns and Mark O'Halloran. Both were exceptionally gifted players, however Johns was able to bring his talent onto the field so he wins.

Rec drugs has nothing to do with footy. Social issue. A third of the league probably do/have taken rec drugs, just the same as other people of the players' ages. You can't give that many boofheads the amount of money they get and expect to play PlayStation all day long, so many will use a few drugs just for kicks or something to do.

Dealing would be another matter though.

If that was the case BB they would of been picked up by the multitude of drugs test these guys randomly are given throughout the entire year

If the NRL is hiding the results (they are probably at risk of a huge compensation claim at some stage ) they are fools

I think that we have assume that if they test clean , they are clean of social drugs

Don't care Snapper , used drugs and shouldn't have been named an immortal[/quote

Well thank the lord you weren't a judge on the panel to pick the next immortal HT.
Andrew Johns is my pick followed closely by
Peter Sterling then Wally Lewis

John Raper is easily the best player that I've seen ,and closely followed by Reg Gasnier and Andrew Johns ( seeing as that question was simply who is the BEST player, not best community citizen)
Gasnier is right up with Raper , but unlike Raper sometimes he would only do what was needed.
The thing was that his "enough" was mostly more than what was needed.
Anyone who wasnt lucky enough to see those players, certainly missed out on something special.

Darren Lockyer has just beaten Wally Lewis for my vote… The Best Player I have seen through video's and was better than both DL & Wally was Norm Provan.

If they are going to include achievements at club level to justify the induction of Andrew Johns, then how old Norm is not an Immortal is beyond me!

Yeah go on , pick the Easts boy

I can remember footy from about the late 80's (so rules out Gasniers, Beetson, Raper, Fulton etc)
but this is my top 5

1\. Joey
2\. Freddy
3\. Wally (he may be higher if I saw more of him)
4\. Mal
5\. SBW (controversial, but he does stuff Ive never seen a forward do, an amazing talent)

Unlucky omissions for me Slater and INglis.

C Smith and Lockyer not brilliant enough for me to make this list (but obviously amazing players)

Thurston wins the most overated player of my era. I think he is very good, but IMO is no where near the best player in the world which he is often billed. He is one of the highest error makers in the comp and if he was as good as he is talked up to be he would have got the cowboys to the top 4 in a regular season at some stage. They have had a good enough roster to achieve it.

Here I was thinking you'd pick Shane McNally

Goal kicking hookers , you just can't beat them

I get why JT gets the billing, but until I see him capable of 'Leading a Team' for an extended period, he wouldn't be 'GREAT' in my eyes.

And as I was typing I was thinking prop or hooker

And guess what , he just jumped about 1000 spots up the rankings with me

Checked Wikipaedia and it turns out he played for the mighty Panthers before he played for that bunch of losers you support and played in reserve grade 1975 GF winning side for Wests

I have watched Rugby League for nearly 60 years. Reg Gasnier was the best I have seen by a long way.

Never had the opportunity to watch him play.

The best player I've ever seen plays the game would be Andrew Johns.
What made John so good is he had all aspects of the game.
A leader
Kicking game short , Long. And a goal kicker.
Brilliant passing game.
Passing game left to right.
Running game.
Defence.
Able to read the game.
The list go's on.
Andrews ability to cover all aspects making him the best player I've seen.

who's the best you've seen?

x2

I've been following the game for 30 years and there hasn't been anyone consistently as good as Johns, in my book.

One of the few players that alone would convince me to watch a match, regardless of the opposition or how his team was travelling. He would dominate teams by himself, made his entire side better.

And when he played us, I'd constantly be afraid that he was about put us away. More than once Newcastle would beat Tigers and I would shake my head and say "result would be different if they didn't have Joey Johns".

In some weird way I was a bit relieved when he retired, because he couldn't dominate us any more.
