The Defensive Myth

I honestly think that despite publicly talking it up, the players knew no Tedesco = no chance

So now your saying we're a one man band :crazy

Taylor has butcherd yet another season !

Picking players out of position and time and time again there's no accountability !

Last nights result just proved that taking shortcuts won't get you into the top 8

I agree Harv, however,I honestly thought they would put in much more than they did especially with the soft trys scored against them….It echoes in my mind the old "we have won games without Teddy before" and it really was an aweful performance all round for us...once again our defense was pitiful for such a defining game...

Isn't it ironic that some people on this forum were beating JT's drum saying how he should be applauded for getting the team mentally ready and prepared for each game the last 4 weeks but now it's not JT's fault that we weren't up for the challenge last night it's everybody else's fault.

Here is the thing. The JT supporters are so delusional. Everything JT does is part of a master plan. It's never a mistake.

The problem is that we've failed to make the 8 two years in a row.

It's pretty sad.

I mean, points against includes goals too does it not? Can't really defend those..

It's the same for every team, though, so it's a moot point…

Not if your team gives away a lot of penalties, that means you would likely end up getting more 2 pointers put on you over the course of the year.. Discipline isn't really indicative of defence. Anyway, my point is that it's far from accurate. Missed tackles, ineffective tackles, etc. the stats that actually gauge the teams performance are more telling imo.

I think just about all penalties are resultant of poor defensive technique and/or structures…eg:
- not clearing the ruck
- chicken wings
- crushers
- cannonballs
- prowlers
- second efforts on the ground
- flops
- head highs
- off side
- late tackles
- attacking someone in the air
- holding down
- inside the 10 on kick chases

Etc....the majority of penalties occur when a team is defending.

JT did pick it when he came here about how our defense needed to improve lits. Everyone on this forum already knew that though.

JTs problem was that he thought he could improve our defense with the players we already had. Nope. We needed to bring in some 'hard heads' but didn't. We all mentioned Beau Scott and others to be the anchor to build around.

This team that we have can defend but it has been proved over the last few years that they cannot sustain a tough defensive attitude over long oeriods of one game, let alone many games on the trot.

Our defense will not improve noticeably until a few new no nonsense hard nuts are added to our squad.

I disagree CQ
I believe defense can be taught, it's not a natural gift like speed.
I think we need someone that can teach the team how to defend effectively as a unit, and Someone able to install the attitude reqd to carry that out.
That said, A few hard nuts like you mentioned wouldn't go astray to assist in this mission…. Would. Make whoever job it eventually becomes easier

So much for the defensive myth theory you say?
We currently sit as the 2nd worst defensive team (albeit close with a few other teams) with only Newcastle worse than us.
Nuff said.

I dunno ink, I think some players are naturally gifted at reading attacks, same as some attackers are naturally gifted at reading defences (in order to exploit them).

Defence is often about split-second decision making, and some players just do not have a natural feel for the shape / structure of the attack being thrown at them, where the playmaker is looking, his hands etc.

But I totally agree it can be vastly improved through practice and definitely the team as a defensive unit need to spend a significant amount of time on team patterns.

It's also 50% confidence, to make the right decision based on the confidence of the players inside and outside you. I think with halves like Benji and Broses over a long period, our outside 2 and inside backrower have always been unconfident about their decision making.

Yeh you're right I guess.
Good fullbacks and the old locks need to possess this intuition… Slater for one used to seem to be always there when needed

And only one of them could be called a genuine quality coach
And even he was on the slide

Against the cowboys our right hand side rushed up in one line. They conceded a try with a kick and im happy to cop that. Then against the panthers its one rushing up, one sitting back, one in no mans land. For me , if you just dont get it, you need to be accountable. If your playing reggies and your specifically told work on your defensive reads, and when you have it worked out we will welcome you back. Then you are forced to concentrate on it and spend more time on it to play first grade. But with no accountability, subconsciously you can be lazy because you know its not really going to cost you.

Plan B = attempt to dilute the failure over a number of years and coaches.

The fan boys and JT are so predictable in that they will never take responsibility.

Ha, I thought GNR would be all over this good news.

Andrew Webster will have his hands full attempting to rectify JT's crap.
