In late 2020, the Tigers signed prop James Tamou, who had just captained the Panthers to a minor premiership and a grand final. Wests saw him as a powerful forward to set an example for the young pack at the club.
Here are the 2020-1* splits for Tamou:

It’s clear that his power in attack (half as many metres and tackle breaks) and efficiency in defence (over triple the amount of missed tackles) have dropped significantly this year, while playing around 3 minutes less per game.

But it also shows that Tamou did have an impressive 2020 season. Barely any missed tackles would have been a major drawing card for a Tigers side consistently shown up in defence. His yardage was great for an interchange forward, with his metres-per-minute being the best for any prop in 2020. It wasn't a terrible signing at all, and most of the media and this sub was very happy with it. Something in Tamou's game has shifted dramatically this season.

Let’s look at his stats in comparison to other middle forwards for 2021:

From an attacking standpoint, Tamou has been quieter this season than Dylan Napa and Aaron Woods. Yep. To be fair, he hasn't missed nearly as many tackles as them. But he still has almost double the missed tackles as his teammate Alex Twal.

Madge wants to create a professional environment with representative, premiership-winning players. Tamou has been all these things in the past. But it seems that he is just that - a “culture signing” - who has brought nothing on-field during the Tigers’ 2021 campaign. Is it a fitness issue? Is Madge playing him wrong? Was he just playing for a contract last year? Or is the club just cursed to ruin good players?

Stats can be very misleading as the data is based with the same player in 2 completely different squads one of which was almost completely undefeated last year as compared to one that loses twice as often as it wins this year.A fairer comparison would be if he was with the same squad 2 years in a row.Despite that i dont believe he has been great value for us this year

Reddit aye?

Melbourne didn't carry a single prop on the bench tonight. Tamou is a waste of space. Twal can do everything Tamou can do times two.

Reddit aye?

Some people call me the space cowboy... I'm a midnight toker.

I thought his best quality was his leadership and experience? Are we not getting value from his leadership qualities? Do we know how to value it or what it actually is?

It’s the tale of two packs – the Panthers 2020 pack versus the WT 2021 pack.

The Panthers dominated the middle in attack and defence. Each player benefiting from the momentum created by his teammates running the ball and dominating their opposition in defence with line speed and dominant tackles.

Our pack rarely dominates and Tamou’s numbers reflect that.

I imagine if Stefano played for the Panthers this year, his numbers would be even better than they are with us.
A player’s performance can be lifted by the quality of the players around him.

I note Sharons missed tackles are very high worst than Tamou and some want him back. A big No from me.

and surprisingly (or not) he still gets picked in our 17 every week .
If these stats can be found on the net, then you would think the coaching staff have these numbers plus more...yet they still pick him in the team every week .
Doesnt make sense

Yeh. That has major alarm bells.

Woods is very lazy covering the middle

Yep. In the Sharks last game I watched him literally stand and watch an opponent run past him.

It's a worry when you give an interview stating that you didn't think you could keep up with the young blokes coming up at the Panthers.
He should've retired if that was his thought process.
