The Madge factor has Marshall torn between signing off and playing on

He has outplayed our "$700k" half for two years now, which is more a statement about Reynolds being poor than it is about Benji. As someone said, for $200k your probably not going to get a better half. Would I keep him? Probably not, but if its for next to nothing then its not going to bother me. **As we are learning hard as Tigers fans, the quality of any signing any player is relevant to how much you pay. Reynolds would be a decent signing at 300k, at $700k+ it is a disaster.**

Maguire obviously likes Benji. He must do alot around the club to bring to the team. Hence why he got a debatable selection in the halves for NZ last week.

I love benji amd robbie both have done a job for us this year for sure. I think moving forward i would like them to play out this year and then move on. Liddle deserves a proper shot. And id like to see us blood some young halves under reynolds and brooks.
Whether we like it or not reynolds is with us for his contract. Its an albatross.
I rate him unfort we havent got the value we hoped.

@cochise I watch us every week and I think Benji has been our best half this year. I get the impression he is also on significantly less than the other two halves in our team.

Agreed completely mate!

@851 The coach obviously doesn't agree!

You can honestly tell me Benji is NRL standard half, I disagree whole heartedly

For 18 mins a game he is NRL standard
(Depending on the opposition)

And that is the problem Hobbo, the media focus on the try assist or field goal, disregard the passes to no one, the idiotic 3rd or 4th tackle kicks, the missed tackles, the dumb game management, but Benji kicked a field goal, he is god, sign him up for 2020

I think the media focus more on
“ that flick pass from 2005 “

But yeah I’m sick to ? of signing up and hanging onto players to prop up there pensions.

Marshall
Farah
Anasta
Blair
Packer
Ballin
Feel free to add to the list .

Very harsh on Benji and Robbie to be included with the others at least both of them played for the club for many seasons and gave us their best,i certainly canr sat the same for the other names. However their time is definately up and they should go at the end of the year

@TieDye He is coming back from a knee reconstruction. He has plenty to offer but you will not see him at his best for 12 months. Also he is not receiving $850k to play CC and not look like an NRL player. He has plenty to offer and just look at Junior Tatola, Ryan Papenhuyzen and JAC to see how our retention succeeded during that era.

For all those who want Benji gone perhaps you should be demanding more from the player brought to the club being paid a fortune who has delivered very little. He is not the player he was either and yet is being paid as a marquee player.
The risk factor with Reynolds is prolonging Benjis career because he has been incapable of
staying on the field and doing the job he has been signed to do.
Reynolds has got the rest of the year to help determine Benji's future. If the concern is really about the team, then the focus should be directed toward the performance of the player who is here for another two years on big dollars, than the stop gap solution.

For me the writing is on the wall. Farah is gradually getting less minutes while Benji is holding his spot over Reynolds and deservedly so.

I think the club would be wary of losing our 2 most experienced players at the same time. We saw how the Broncos have gone when they chose to keep top young players over experience.

IMO, Farah will retire and Benji will play one more year. I'm okay with that as I don't think we have a better option then Benji at the moment.

This is the whole issue isn't it. Salary cap management is the name of the game. You can't make Reynolds out to be a good signing because of his attitude etc because we are paying him to be a top performer.

Pap has had a few good games, yes... JAC walked and I’m not going to have to say that to any more people on here. Really sick of people acting like we had a choice there?

Jury’s still out on Tatonka for mine, hasn’t looked nearly as good without Grub’s around him (the burg hi)

@WT2K NGL, i want Farah to retire and i'm sure i'm not the only one but Marshall...i'm not actually too sure aye.....50/50 whether i want him to stay or not next year...probably leaning more towards yes but it's like a 51/49...lol.....i dunno...but i want Farah to retire..Liddle is a boss and some!!!!

@TieDye Papenhuyzen was a keeper but our retention was not up to it. JAC as well. You want them badly enough, you keep them. Tatola has been a stand out for Souths in an impressive pack. A very robust player.

@pawsandclaws1 I totally agree but Josh did not let us have the opportunity - was always sold on Melbourne- I only know because am family friends with quite a few his extended family. Tatola is definitely robust but is a benchy and was utterly dominated by our not-so-stellar pack on Thursday night... I’m not speaking on whether we decided to keep or release him but it’s clear that we didn’t prioritise him and he’s definitely better than one we kept in JJ. Felise. Retention had been screwed by Sheen’s approach roughly 5 years earlier! That is a fact

Paps was one that got away... but I’d still rather have a Dane Laurie, Gareth Ellis or Fifita than a speedy outside back who lacks a team giving him punch up the middle. Do you honestly think Ryan would be anywhere near as good in our meagre line up? C’mon paws

Benjis effort in stopping codey walker on Thursday night is reason alone to keep him for one more year. Imo he adds a lot to our team. His leadership and effort on effort is the modern benji I never thought I’d see. He has finally evolved and I hope he continues

Im not adverse to Benji going around again but not as a guaranteed starter, i think he's better than Reynolds and thats saying something. I think Robbie should sail off into the sunset however.
I think Benji could offer alot as a playing mentor.

Benji always had a lot of mistakes in his game even in his prime but people ignored those mistakes then because he did some outrageously and wonderful good things.

Today Benji has more errors in him with way more less good things. But that’s ok when he is on minimum wage. I just don’t see a future keeping Benji on, low wage and all. Benji is not an organiser either and I think he and Farah have hindered Brooks this year.

I’d just like to invest more in younger players moving forward.

My view exactly, the club is being held back by these 2, just because they are supposedly cheap doesn't make it right, they both are selected every week regardless of form, and that is just plain wrong
