The numbers tell a sad, sad story

Hey guys, i'm back, been busy the past couple of years with studies but have still kept an eye on this place. Just haven't posted. A) because i needed a break from here and B) those forementioned studies.

Anyways, i got thinking the other night about the horrible missed tackles and line breaks conceded over the opening month and i decided to do a bit of research thanks to nrl.com. The result is horrible reading sadly

Round 1 V Cronulla: Errors: 19, Missed Tackles: 34, LB's for: 2, LB Con: 6
Round 2 V Manly: E: 11, MT's: 31, LBF:3, LBC: 4
Round 3 V St George: E: 19, MT's:31, LBF:1, LBC:5
Round 4 V Canberra: E: 8, MT's:48, LBF:8, LBC:12

Totals:
Errors: 57 from 4 games
Missed Tackles: 141 from 4 games
Line Breaks for: 8 from 4 games
Line Breaks conceded: 27 from 4 games

Now i don't need to tell anyone how diabolical those read. They are pathetic, shameful and completely unacceptable! Tommy's rant yesterday was on the money and our guys need to pull their fingers out and work a lot harder than they have and it MUST start this weekend. I'm not asking for a win, i'm just asking for more discipline and better application.

not that it tells too much but still interesting

Yeah, interesting that the missed tackle count is so close. Though I do wonder how they compare say over all teams. Could just be an early season thing??

The stats speak loud and clear and it upsets me to say but watching our games we have looked a level or two ( grade wise ) lower than all the teams we played ( even the sharks )

What can be done to improve the situation, the sad, sad story imo is that it has continued for 4 games.

the sad thing is you can look at that and say its okay we got better. but really it should not have happened last year either.

That's what i've thought too. The errors don't surprise me so much but apart from the Canberra game which i did not see, i've thought our defense as a whole has been down a cog or two. Lawrence and Ayshford especially have looked off the pace with their defense. Sadly they've not been the only ones, just perhaps the two i've noticed have played below their best in defense.

This puts the argument to bed. We play like crap at the start of every season, the numbers reflect that. Doesn't mean the season is over. Think of the Dragons, consistently start well and then burnout and fail when it matters. I still think we'll make the top 4, and I predict we'll lose this week to Souths. It's all about a bigger picture.

These stats dont lie. For the people who think this team is going to kick start into action in a few weeks your dreaming. We are a class front rower short, we dont have enough hard young legs in the backrow, we dont have a no7 and we have the slowest backline in the NRL, and of course theirs the bench, the make up and how it is used. We will improve and have a few wins but we will not come near any of the better sides in the next month or so and by that time the horses has bolted.

Every year its the same but in the past two years we have had a grandstand finish, just cant see it this year. Been a long time since we have played three games and never been in the contest

Spot on, I'm sick of people saying basically "who cares we always start slowly we will come good".

This was the year we were supposed to start well. His is the year we were supposed to play consistent football.

Just because we went on a winning streak in the past two years means sweet fa.

For starters, last year we weren't too props short and we had a halfback. Not so this season.

Simply saying "yeah we start slow" isn't good enough. That is accepting mediocrity. What you should be asking is WHY we start like garbage every year. It isn't good enough.

yes it shows why we been losing…position and posession wins you football games...it will improve and the moment it does we will string a few wins and be back in the 8.....

On a side note i know the penaltys were 9-3 v raiders and i think the same against the dragons and against manly it was 7-6...the only game we won the penalty count we won.

Having our forwards only 3 times making over 100 meters and twice it been woods isn't helping

For me the disappointing aspect and one that needs to fixed before we can go anywhere this year is the lack of technique and commitment the TEAM is showing when tackling. We have rarely been great tacklers but this season it has fallen to new lows.

No leg drive, no shoulder, too much arm-grabbing, reluctance to go to the ground to make the tackle effective and tacklers working against each other all add up to missed tackles, allowing off-loads and lack of dominance in the ruck.

Fix this and a lot of good will follow… who is the defensive coach anyway? They need a rocket!

We are hopeless at containing the ball!
What's so hard about this - every other team seems to easily stop us offloading.
