The problem beneath the problem

Hi Everyone,

This is my first time posting. I love reading everyone's comments and I am a passionate Wests Tigers supporter. I tried following another team in 2000 after the merge but I just couldn't do it, so despite shambles that is my beloved club I just keep supporting!

It seems to me that people on the forum have great insight into exactly what is wrong with the club [over paying players, focus on youth, wrong coach, dysfunctional board etc…] however it made me wonder why we continually make the same mistakes when they are seemingly so obvious.

I think there is one problem beneath all the other problems. If we can identify that and address it surely the rest of the problems will sort themselves. My question is… **if you could change one thing at the club to fix all the other problems what would it be?** That is how would you solve the problem beneath every other problem?

For my mind the key issue in a salary cap system is value for money players rather than big name players. Kind of like the money ball idea.

I would be keen to hear everyone's thoughts. Thanks for all the posts and GO THE MIGHTY WESTS TIGERS!

welcome mate !

change 1 thing : first and foremost
The Board incl the ceo.

parramatta have years and years of issues at board level that climaxed last year.
They now have a very very astute CEO who also brought in all new board members
If anyone saw his interview with Sterlo - that was it ! !
That is they type of man you want running a club.
all else will fall into place

That sounds great but who chooses the board and the CEO? How do you make that kind of decision? We have changed the board and CEO a few times and it hasn't helped.

I don't think there is just one problem. The Tigers have the worst training facilities of any club. They haven't been competitive for six years. We've had four head coaches in five years. Multiple players have had falling outs with different coaches. We've signed terrible contracts for players that either haven't performed or aren't worth it. Now we could lose 3 of our best players. And these are just some of the problems Wests Tigers have had. We're just unlucky or maybe cursed. As far as the salary cap goes we're actually looking alright at the moment. I think well see improvement with Cleary appointed. But that's just blind faith and hope on my part.

Fold..

Then jump on the Storm..or Roosters..

No ..seriously good 1st post and welcome…I think we have started to fix the problem with the appointment of Cleary as coach with full control of the football department ...without interference from other directions...it's been born out in 48hrs already...

This is also the 1st time in our history where ownership is not hamstrung with a funding issue where one party could only put in what the other party could afford..

hahaha yes this club goes around in circles for sure !

however,
at the end of the day this is the NRL where anything and everything is possible.

But yes, GEO is correct - Cleary is a great start.

I cant help but to come back to the intervew sterlo had with the new ceo of parra
that is the type of man that would take this club forwar.

complete football knowledge and nouce matched with absolute professionalism

marina Go would have done well to watch that interview ….

The first thing I would change is making high-profile players want to come to the tigers.

To do that we need a good culture where the players play for each other and have their backsides.
We need the facilities, we need good juniors coming up so they can learn from the senior squad, develop and then apply pressure for a spot in the 17.
We need a board that makes decisions in the best interest for the club, fans and players (and in that order)
We need to start getting some performances on-field so the media can get off our backs with all this contract talk etc.

There are many things that the club need to change but appointing Cleary is a very smart decision and is a step in the right direction :sign:

I think our biggest problem is passion.

I hear other players from other clubs talk about playing for their mates and their fans & not wanting to let them down. I don't hear that from the Tigers…..instead I hear from them " its a business and looking after yourself" .... well that probably explains their efforts on the field. I have never heard that rubbish from a cam smith, cooper cronk, billy slater, darren lockyer, corey parker and the like. Those players loved the club probably more than their own careers.....and its probably why their clubs are successful. Would any one of those players put up with a team mate who wasn't as passionate, or who put bets on opposition players....I don't think so.

Sure management, the board and the club structures are very important but its only one piece of the jigsaw puzzle.

Just my 2 cents worth.

You can blame the CEO, blame the board, blame the coach, blame the player manager…but the reason why we are in is mess rests squarely on the "Big4" players... they have brought this club down over the last 2 years.... It's no coincidence that the halves , and the team, started to play well after they took up their option last year...their procrastination and lack of commitment to the club, their teammates to setttle their futures this year has no doubt unswettled the club...The Big 4 have shown no loyalty to the club that has put them in a position to command big dollars...they should sign up and get down to playing good foooty so the club (and them) can have a chance to play semis in 2017...

The Big4 are totally to blame for the sh*t this club finds itself in

I think it's the other way around. Success brings passion and that desire to play for your team mates and the club. It also creates a connection between the players and the club. I think the fact that Moses hasn't had any success with the Tigers is one of the reasons he wants out.

I think the problem is, and always has been, the marriage! We're the only joint venture in the comp and our ongoing struggle to thrive as a club shows that they just don't work. St Geo/Illawarra is a take over not a JV, Illawarra were a new club by comparison that had little, or no, history in the league - not so St George and not so Balmain & Wests.

The battle for power between the backroom factions of 2 clubs, with a long proud history is never-ending. I thought after our Premiership in 2005 that they would come together more amicably and finally become one, but things have gone even more pear-shaped since then, with little success on the field causing even more grief.

The culture of a club begins at the top and our culture has stunk for a long, long time because the interests of those on the Balmain side and those on the Wests side of the JV have never been compatible and I'm not sure if they ever will be.

The NRL is hamstrung by contractual negotiations that seem to go on all season.
Our season is effectively over and the team we thought we were supporting and paid our memberships to is now not what we signed up for.
Best way to lose fans - keep doing what that are doing.

Think you are wrong Flip - think that what you are talking about has been put to bed.

It is only a problem when someone (like your good self) brings it up, that it becomes a problem by reminding everyone of it again.

Balmain and Western Suburbs will always be our history / DNA and where we came from but….

I would say compared to when I first joined the Forum , most of us are on the same page and are Wests Tigers supporters.

Personally, I don't even think about it anymore.

I'm not talking about us the fans Russ (though I'm sure there are some who still feel this way), I'm talking about the powers that be behind the club. You are kidding yourself if you think there aren't still factions within.
