THE SALARY CAP

Really are we that tight on the cap that we have to release players that give us some back up, from injuries.
When I go thought our team and the top 25 players and compare it with other teams who are still signing players I just cant for the life of me see how we can be close to the cap. Some thing is wrong with the way we do business.

As long as we are legit I have no issues…you have to remember we are STILL paying(therefore included in our CAP) many of the Tiger Sharks we let go...Gibbs and Ayshford for example...

Something was wrong with the way we did business previous to Mayer and co coming onboard. Unfortunately Mayer has to fix the mess, and I have complete faith in him thus far to do so.

We might lose a few players because of paying overs and backloading contracts, but we will be better off in the future. Short term loss for a long term gain.

I dont understand it given who we have released over the past three years.

Marshall, Ellis, Gibbs, Heigno (signed at a time when the Dragons were after him), Ryan.

I struggle with how we can have cap problems with our squad. Imagine what will happen once our young stars prove their worth.

Players released whilst under WT contract…therefore we still were paying a chunk of their new contract.

Ellis
Gibbs
Ryan and Heighno

We are still paying Marshall for 2014 and 2015...I believe its only $40k p.a. but still...that counts in our cap,

I would be very surprised if Ellis is in our cap given he wanted a release. Why would we pay him anything? Also he was only released a year early so that would have ended now.

I understood all the Tiger Sharks ended last year.

The Benji one I dont understand either. Why we are paying him when he wanted the release befuddles me.

We probably front loaded the first years of Benji deal so that some of it still counts for subsequent years.

I would be shocked and disgusted if we were paying Ellis when he wanted a release on compassionate grounds.

BMM would've been on some money that can be better used elsewhere

Yeah that is not confirmed by anyone anywhere. I see people make that claim and I am puzzled. I suspect they are claiming that from previous releases without understanding the situation is fundamentally different if the club is acceding to a request from the player. Usually the continued payments are a sweetener to another club to take him, or to ensure the player receives the same amount of money and is thereby willing to accept the offer of a release. Given we wanted to keep him why the hell would we still offer these inducements to leave?

Sorry ST, I've just repeated what you said. It's just an often repeated claim which frustrates me!

Its not fait accompli that any player that is released means we are automatically paying for them for years to come.

Also it would be a fair assumption that we are not paying Ryan given he we off contract anyway.

Maybe the CEO should introduce a "deficit tax" on members.
