The whipping boys

Gee, how dare the guy have a bit of ambition. Maybe if the club had been more professionally run we wouldn't be reduced to players like him. Oh but its his fault. He should be playing above his ability and winning us games.

I am not doubting his ambition just his ability, he obviously rates his ability higher than it is. He makes these statements and does not back them up he is fair game, it is that simple. You can't blame the club for his comments or his higher opinion of himself than is reality.

So that's why he warrants criticism? Yet Rankin has never come out and made those statements and he still cops it.

How old are you 6, you had a hissy fit when I bagged Rankin, you are having another one now about JLJ and you had a melt down when I bagged JT. This club is clearly to much for you.

You're the one getting personal.

I thought I would dedicate a thread to the club's whipping boy's and this forum's fascination with them. By whipping boys I mean Rankin, JLJ, Lovett, Edwards and even Sue to a lesser extent. I really don't understand the hatred, regardless of how much I try to. We've been resigned to having these kinds of players due to years of mis-management. Blame the club, don't blame the players.

The hatred for JLJ yesterday. What were some of you expecting from a player earning close to minimum wage. Even read comments of anyone being a better option than JLJ, even Rankin lol. What's hilarious about that is if it was Rankin who'd have had a shocker there would have been calls for JLJ. Our depth sucks, that's due to the previous administration, blame them .

I dont think anyone is blaming the players if your not up to Nrl standard thats just the way it goes…i solely blame our talent identification scouts and management for giving them a start....i dont think things have changed much...were still signing players from pillow football in the hope they will be the one in a million player that turns out to be a thurston or inglis ....at the moment we cant compete with most of the sides in the NRL....we supprters deserve a top 8 roster from round 1 next year....for once in a long time we have a bit of cash to spend....and bargain basement signings accounts to bargain basement results

Rankin, JLJ, Lovett, Edwards…dont stop there please!

Throw in Lawrence and Naiqama.
Brooks is still amateurish and Suli, Aloiai and Mcilwrick offer very little in attack.

Poor, poor excuses for first-graders. They would barely get a run in any other team.

I blame the administration for sure. But the administration aren't making school boy errors on the field each week. GNR; no one hates them, but they deserve the brunt of the blame because, well, as far as on-field performance goes they are blameworthy. Crikey, Lawrence has barely gone a week in his career without making pathetic mistakes.

The whipping boys deserve all the criticism they get. They play football for a living earning minimum $80k a year. If they don't like it, they can get a different job

I agree with some of the original post.

I couldn't really be bothered getting worked up about a poor performance by JLJ.

He is a career reserve grader. Slow as a wet week.

He is doing his best out there The fact he had a poor game should come as no surprise.

Still I totally understand fans frustrations given it was a close game and we could've won.

I probably lean to the side that say we would be better off with Rankin there.

Whats the saying you can't polish a turd?

This pretty much sums it up. Even the worst first graders are earning far more than the average 9-5 Joe, even if that Joe is great at their job.

I don't hate based on ability. I do however hold disdain for a percieved lack of basic skills required to do the job.

Catching a football, kicking a football, tackling people. These kind of things feel like basic skills for me and they should have been nailed down well before first grade, and well before they get paid any kind of money to step on the football field.

If any of us made similar bread and butter mistakes at our place of work getting paid that kind of money, we'd be outta there quicker than you can say YOU'RE FIRED.

When JLJ can't seem to kick a football consistently, Kyle lovett seems to have feet for hands, and Mitchell Moses can't seem to wrap his arms around a player, that's where I get annoyed.

I hear what people are saying but we don't have many options, we are not the Roosters and have FG quality players waiting in reserve grade.

We had 2 new players on debut on the weekend which hopefully progress over the coming weeks.

The only issue I had with the team was JLJ getting the nod over Rankin, thought Rankin was better at Brisbane. Ivan will know what he is doing, he has to give the guys a chance under him.

People wont admit it but I think Lovvet is looking better under Cleary.

Im sure our whipping boys try their best.
When I watch all the other games and I see all our ex players killing it at other clubs (theyre everywhere its hard to miss em) its hard to blame our reggies players

This thread makes no sense. We are talking about proffesional footballers, that are on at least $100k if not more to play sport as a full time job. If you have a bad game you will be criticised. We as passionate supporters will criticise players when they play bad. You can have all the ambition and heart in the world but if your not up to it then your not. JLJ had a shocker. Is it the clubs fault for previous mis management that JLJ kept passing to no one, or kicking it straight to the oppositon, hell no. He was given a chance and he didn't take it, he rightly copped criticism. If he has a blinder next week we all love him. Thats footy…..

Actually, in a way, yes. Because if they hadn't been so inept he wouldn't be out there in the first place. If you hand a 10 year old a set of car keys and tell him to go for a drive and he crashes the car, whose at fault?

Most of the criticism comes from the fact that many of our depth players play first grade each week because of out terrible roster put together by a previous coach/admin.Cleary is rightly fixing up the mess i dont even mind if some of the "depth players" stay for 2018 but they shouldnt ever see first grade next year.
I have massive faith in Ivan to fix the mess he inherited. This year i hope we avoid the spoon and with a new roster next year to start our climb up the table

Our team as a whole isn't a cohesive unit. You could throw just about any of those players into the Storm's team and they'd look solid at the least. The situation is the cause of our issues, and that was caused by previous management. Our team is made up of these gap fillers and they're expected to carry the team in key positions.

On another note I don't really understand the negativity towards Sue. He can be a really solid player and was looking like he had a lot of progression building at one stage. His performances have crumbled (far from the worst btw) with the rest of the team so I hardly think he's worth mentioning individually. As I said and others have mentioned the blame shouldn't be cast on individual players for the most part.

Been down this path before - the club has failed to put together a roster that is of first grade standard due to years of poor salary cap management and lack of funds. The players we have lost/ let go have not been replaced by better ones, instead we have bought a string of fringe first graders that came cheaply who could aptly fill gaps in a good roster -but are no way starters from week to week like they are in our team.
Its no wonder our quality players - like our fans - have been frustrated by this because they are in no position to fix it.
Things finally look like we are in a good place to take the club forward from years of underwhelming performances - but the promise of next year will be better has definitely run out of gas.

I'd like to extend that to players like Nathan Milone also… He and his family recieved abuse beyond the RL field from disgruntled fans, in restaurants, at family gatherings etc.

The players dont pick the team [well, some may have an influence] and if they have done the hard work over the past 5-6 years and get lucky enough to get a call up to NRL, they deserve it by seeing it through for 9 months every year and making the sacrifices that come with being a professional athlete.
