Thoughts on Pritchards hit...

I think it is a shame that big Frank is in hot water for that tackle which was a great rugby league hit.

He has been cited for what is a traditional, front on, old fashioned belter….very reminiscent to our own Simon Dwyers big hit on Hargraves.

Not that I think their tackles should see suspensions but Slater and Ryans coat hangers were far worse as they involved very little technique compared to Pritchards. I hope he doesnt get suspended for it as these hits are what sets our sport above the more limp wristed codes of Union and AFl.

What do you guys think? Should he cop a suspension?

The shoulder charge looks spectacular when it comes off but Pritchard has twice showed the damage it can cause when contact to the head is made. I thought he was lucky to escape a suspension for the hit on Wade Graham last year but he won't be so lucky for the hit on Simmons. Simmons spent the night in hospital for severe concussion so Pritchard needs to serve a suspension.

Not a fan of the style that Pritchard uses. It is actually more of a body check that a shoulder charge. When ever there is a height differential in favour of the checker it is a very dangerous move

Nup… Last time I checked this is a contact sport!

I understand why some people are supportive of Simmons on this incident, but he chose to run at the biggest bloke on the field. We get so caught up in contact with the head, but what is Pritchard supposed to do. Give the game away???

Maybe wingers should stay on there Wings and leave to tough stuff for the big boys!!!

Exactly Watto….if you run straight at a big fella like Pritch then you have to take your medicine.

It was a great hit, an unfortunate result for Simmons, but that is football. His shoulder was aimed at his chest and Simmons compacted his body lowering his head. Thats the way it goes.

Don't get me wrong I do enjoy the contact sports but maybe Pritchard should learn to tackle with his arms more. This is Pritchard's second incident of a big hit gone wrong with players left heavily concussed after contact to the head.
The problem is if a player slips or falls into that type of hit a player performing the hit can't pull out of it and the damage can be quite serious to the ball carrier.

Have to say it looks good when he pulls it off, but I wouldn't be very happy if he did it to any of our boys. Imagine the damage he'd do to Utai, he'd take his head clean off.

Have to say I agree with Stryker, if you run at the big boys, chances are you're going to get hurt.

The little blokes have certain skills such as their speed and evasiveness to combat the size differences. Most of the time they have the advantage.

But sometimes they stuff up and jink when they should have swerved. When this happens the big fellas have a duty to belt the bejesus out of them….every coach I ever had always said if you get your hands on them make sure they regret it lol....

Too little margin for error.

Nobody likes seeing players on the floor concussed or off on a stretcher.

Pritchard is a great player when he decides the inject himself which is usually against WT in a penrith jumper.

Best leave the shoulder charge out the game.

Am i reading Wests Tigers fans saying leave the shoulder charge out of the game??? So we turn it into Rugby Union.

Wake up to yourselves, the game has gone soft enough. That was a case of the attacker running into pritchard's shoulder just like JWH did to Simon Dwyer in 2010\. Simmons decided to run straight at Frank and tried to streamroll him which he failed to do and got hammered.

Brilliantly said… I felt the same way. Simmons tried to run at the biggest bloke on the field and gets cleaned up!

I was reading in disgust this morning an article in the DT with Dr Nathan Gibbs stating all tackles above the nipple should be outlawed... Stop ruining this great game and keep it the way it is.

Fire Up Tiger99... Make sure the boys are ready to belt those Silvertales on Friday!!!

Agree with you guys in relation to Nathan Gibbs comments but thats all…
My own thoughts about shoulder charges are that they are lazy pieces of showboating usually done by some huge boofhead - with the chance that if you miss you open a huge hole because you haven't got your hands on the attacking player.
In Pritchards case he is just a grub.
He deliberately put his shoulder into his head- don't make excuses.
If you look at the Wade Graham shot from last year it was closer to being his elbow to his head.
Interestingly he made the mistake of trying it on Idris in the All Star game this year and ended up looking like the clown he is.
I appeciate the hard stuff as much as anybody (ex front rower) but this is just youtube fodder with no substance.
PS In relation to Dwyers hit it was a direct charge head on into another big man

I think in Dwyer's case, his tackling technique will change drastically if he ever returns. I doubt he'll ever lead with his shoulders into a tackle again.

As for Pritchard hit, things happen in body contact sport.

Its up to the League governing body to either alter the rules, stopping shoulder charges, or just let them keep happening.

I have one question to ask:
will the shoulder charges stop being used, when the defender ends up requiring season ending surgery??

What happened was a small back ran full speed into a forward that saw him coming and timed the contact. Simmons knew what was going to happen and cliched a bit, pulling his head a little lower. BANG. His out. I'm should he would have got the same results if he ran at any other object that was bigger then him.

I don't like the shoulder charge. But only in that it is lazy and does wrap up the ball. It does have a place in out game. Maybe we should just stop winger running at forwards.

I wonder if we would have so many pro Pritchard comments if he did the same thing to Marshall and put him on the sideline ?
I don't have any problem with anyone hurting another player legally -loved doing it myself and didn't begrudge copping it in return.
Pritchard is plenty big enough to hurt people in legitimate tackles but he doesn't have much of a tackling technique
(too lazy)
Lazy in attack too - that's why he lucky to play one good game in 10.

If that's fair in our game, ive heard it all. When will he ever learn. That hit is illegal. He had all intention with his actions. Lucky I'm not on the judiciary panel, minimum 3 weeks for the repeat offender.

I clicked on this thread ready to write that I was against the Pritchard hit and that measures needed to be taken in order to protect the head of the players.
After reading a few great posts; Watto and Tiger99\. He did run at Pritchard and probably deserved a flogging for utter stupidity. Great posts guys.

CK if it happened to Benji I would say ' whoops wrong option there mate…'
It wasnt a swinging arm or coathanger - there was no malice other than hitting the player hard. He did not try to take old mates head off. He lined him up, led with his shoulder and thats how it went. It also wasnt your typical "shoulder charge" as many have stated. It had technique and certainly wasnt lazy.
