THREE Wests Tigers players have been heavily fined and forced to apologise to teammates after a Friday night drinking session in a western Sydney pub.
>
Beau Ryan, Liam Fulton and Bryce Gibbs watched two games of televised Friday night football on March 18 before the night ended on a sour note - with a heated carpark argument between two of the players, a woman and her partner.
>
A witness says a bouncer was forced to step in to break up a potential scuffle.
>
Tigers CEO Stephen Humphreys said players were remorseful that they had broken the club’s zero alcohol consumption policy for injured players.
>
They breached protocol by drinking during the season, particularly while in rehabilitation when they should have been preparing to regain fitness.
>
Fulton (shoulder injury) is expected to return to the field in Round 8, while injuries to Gibbs (knee) and Ryan (groin) are indefinite.
>
The club is already under strong scrutiny - because of an alleged punch thrown by star player Benji Marshall after a season launch in the city late last month.
>
The first-grade trio left the pub after televised games finished just before midnight.
>
A patron who saw the players inside the pub said they were in good spirits, but had clearly been drinking.
>
Another witness, who has asked for strict anonymity, spoke of a heated carpark argument.
>
Mr Humphreys backed the players, but admitted a pub was probably not the ideal venue to spend a Friday night while in rehabilitation.
>
He would not say how much players had been fined, but said it was in the ``thousands, not hundreds’‘.
>
``They have also suffered the indignity of apologising to their teammates and coaches for the poor decision that they made on this occasion,’’ he said.
>
``I’ve spoken to nine people about the alleged carpark incident and all agree there was nothing in it.’’
