ROOKIE Wests Tigers halfback Jacob Miller says motivation to bring his A-game to training is at its apex with the vacant No. 7 jersey up for grabs in 2012.
While competition for the role is at a premium, Miller, 19 says he needs little incentive to perform on the training paddock in a bid to outshine his team mates.
Tim Moltzen and Parramatta recruit Tom Humble are also in line for the coveted role -but motivated to add to his four games in 2011, Miller is desperate to make his mark.
“I need to come to training with a lot of enthusiasm and make sure every time I go out there on the field and gym I give it my all,” Miller told Sportsnewsfirst.com.au.
“It’s a big motivator knowing that spots up for grabs that doesn’t make it very hard to switch off when you’re going for a session.
“There is plenty of competition it’s not going to be easy.
“I’ll be training hard and we’ll see what happens.
“A spot is up for grabs, and I’d love to get my hands on it.”
Named the Toyota Cup Team of the year halfback, Miller was honoured by the selection which capped off a mixed year for the young playmaker.
He also made the Junior Kangaroos, who played in the curtain raiser to the Australian vs New Zealand Test match in Newcastle last month.
While his coach Tim Sheens, who also runs the international side, was pleased with Miller’s selection the veteran coach is looking for improvement for the young half.
With bettering himself his priority, Miller believes a real emphasis will be placed on trialling well with the best performer likely to land the gig for Round 1.
“The way the trials go will have a lot to do with how sheensy goes in his selections,” Miller said.
Having been a part of the squad for two years since joining from the Roosters, Miller is confident his combinations within the team will only continue to grow in strength.
“There’s a couple of young boys coming through that I would have played with last season and we did the pre season with the older boys last year and trained with them throughout the year,” he explained.
“I’m pretty familiar with everyone and we’re a pretty tight knit group so it shouldn’t be too hard.”
One former 20’s player who has backed Miller to succeed in the role is Aaron Woods who made his NRL debut in Round one this season.
“He’s a good player Milky and he doesn’t mind getting into the hard stuff,” Woods said.
“To learn of Benji (Marshall) as well will make him more confident because Benji’s a real good talker on the field and all that stuff will give him confidence and take a bit of pressure off.”
