Tiger cub wants key role

ROOKIE Wests Tigers halfback Jacob Miller says motivation to bring his A-game to training is at its apex with the vacant No. 7 jersey up for grabs in 2012.

While competition for the role is at a premium, Miller, 19 says he needs little incentive to perform on the training paddock in a bid to outshine his team mates.

Tim Moltzen and Parramatta recruit Tom Humble are also in line for the coveted role -but motivated to add to his four games in 2011, Miller is desperate to make his mark.

“I need to come to training with a lot of enthusiasm and make sure every time I go out there on the field and gym I give it my all,” Miller told Sportsnewsfirst.com.au.

“It’s a big motivator knowing that spots up for grabs that doesn’t make it very hard to switch off when you’re going for a session.

“There is plenty of competition it’s not going to be easy.

“I’ll be training hard and we’ll see what happens.

“A spot is up for grabs, and I’d love to get my hands on it.”

Named the Toyota Cup Team of the year halfback, Miller was honoured by the selection which capped off a mixed year for the young playmaker.

He also made the Junior Kangaroos, who played in the curtain raiser to the Australian vs New Zealand Test match in Newcastle last month.

While his coach Tim Sheens, who also runs the international side, was pleased with Miller’s selection the veteran coach is looking for improvement for the young half.

With bettering himself his priority, Miller believes a real emphasis will be placed on trialling well with the best performer likely to land the gig for Round 1.

“The way the trials go will have a lot to do with how sheensy goes in his selections,” Miller said.

Having been a part of the squad for two years since joining from the Roosters, Miller is confident his combinations within the team will only continue to grow in strength.

“There’s a couple of young boys coming through that I would have played with last season and we did the pre season with the older boys last year and trained with them throughout the year,” he explained.

“I’m pretty familiar with everyone and we’re a pretty tight knit group so it shouldn’t be too hard.”

One former 20’s player who has backed Miller to succeed in the role is Aaron Woods who made his NRL debut in Round one this season.

“He’s a good player Milky and he doesn’t mind getting into the hard stuff,” Woods said.

“To learn of Benji (Marshall) as well will make him more confident because Benji’s a real good talker on the field and all that stuff will give him confidence and take a bit of pressure off.”

Miller is the man I believe is going to be the next superstar.

I have only seen him in those 4 FG games and the youngster has the skills offensivle and the heart defensivly.

With a few back to back games under his belt, I don't think we will miss Lui at all.

I have agree with you Spartan, with a full off season under his belt I believe Miller will be the one to step up for us next year. With Chisholm and Humble keeping him honest, Lui will just be a mere memory.

He's been around the squad for a full season now, and even pulled on a FG jumper a couple of times. Why is it that we will take a chance on players who clearly aren't halfbacks and the closest thing we've had to a #7 since Prince doesn't get a look in because he's "too young"? Manly took a chance on DCE and he didn't even have the luxury of a FG hardened halves partner to work with.

Put him in the #7, put Blair outside him to give him a little more confidence in defence and she'll be apples.

As much as I like Brown, leave Moltzen in the #1 jersey. He's technically the incumbent and should be given first shot. Don't mess him about again.

Moltzen needs to prove he can take kicks back at full speed
Milkman needs develop his game, he needs to take the line on alot more IMO

I say give him a crack.

He's more of a natural player than Humble, and NOT just there for utility value.

Plus he kicks goals like a BOSS as well.

As much as I love Mitch Brown, i'm honestly simply resigned to the fact that Moltzen will be fullback which I don't really mind, as long as he keeps his end of season form going. Bell and Reddy will be on the bench, and Brown, sadly in state cup.. The second we get an injury Brown will be there, and once again be mister reliable, a tag i'm sure he's sick of hearing. :frowning:

Miller is a natural Halfback - something we haven't had since Prince. Lui, and Moltzen were manufactured, Farah likes to moonlight there, and Lazarus was never given a real shot.

Give Miller a Bonafide crack, have him defend next to Blake Ayshford, Adam Blair, or Gareth Ellis to staunch him up, let him have a bit of creative licence (and watch as coaches start to realise that we have ANOTHER headache on the park, except not with the surname MARSHALL) and watch his game flourish.

The kid will be gun.

the thing i like about miller is that he is aggressive and was always to get involved, even in defence

he will definitely get his chance to become our fulltime 7

I am a Miller fan too. Think he has the skills (INCLUDING goal kicking) and a bit of mongrel. With the experience of Robbie and Benji near him I am hoping for big things in 2012\. Still reckon Moltzen at no.1 until Reddy (or someone else….maybe Grant who will start at some point in nos. 2 or 5) proves themselves in the black and gold no.1

From his under 20s form he is way too "kick happy" in the opposition 20!!!

When his kicks come off they appear brilliant - but when they don't he gets frustrated and keeps trying the same thing ad infinitum betting on a different result!

He reminds me of Tim Smith and Luke Walsh who cannot read the game to put a man through a gap with a pass - but instead need to keep going over the top with a prayer for their results!

That sort of football almost always comes unstuck in semis!!

PS - As for "Miller Time" - maybe if you tasted that stale urine your graphic represents you'd have second thoughts young fella!

it's only early but i'm pretty certain the time is right
miller > lui

… believe it.

Red, the crisp taste of Millers' Chill goes alright on a scorching summer's day!

If he gets a go at 7 then it's a big opportunity, the ball will be his court to make the most of it, such opportunities aren't frequent.

It's up to you young man head down ,train hard,be positive and the world might be your oyster .There are many Tigers fans that think your the man for the 1/2 spot don't let us down! 2012 is your year.

DCE was like 22 or 23 when he debuted - older than Lui who was in his 3rd season of first grade

He'd just turn 22 when he debuted. It does give them a bit of an advantage.

I think Sheens just has to bite the bullet. With Benji, Farah and Moltzen there we have enough of a brains trust, and all Miller has to do is catch and pass. When he gets a bit older and more comfortable he can start over ruling those blokes, much like Lui did on occasions this year.
