Tiger Talk: Chris Lawrence
Wests Tigers centre Chris Lawrence talks about the win over Penrith and the long trip to Townsville in this week's Tiger Talk column.
Tiger Talk is part of the Club's weekly feature in the Campbelltown Advertiser.
'Lawrence's Lowdown'
Wests Tigers might have collected the two points last Saturday night but we still have plenty of work to do.
The win over Penrith was a real arm wrestle with the lead swapping several times. I always thought we were in control and even when Penrith hit the lead late in the game, the good thing was that we didn’t panic.
It was a tough, grinding win and one we badly needed to end a three game losing streak. And at this stage of the season, any win is a vital win.
I want to thank the Wests Tigers fans who braved the cold conditions to come out and support us. There might have only been 12,000 people there but I can assure you, your support especially towards the end of the game certainly lifted the team when we needed it the most.
Having grown up in the area, Campbelltown Sports Stadium will always be a special ground for me. I love playing there and it still gives me a great buzz to run out in front of my home town for the Wests Tigers. I hope all of the young rugby league players playing in the Western Suburbs Juniors competitions have that dream as well.
Speaking of kids, it was again great to see plenty of children attend the post match presentation with their parents in Wests Leagues Club auditorium and also those who I met at the Wests Tigers Gearzone store in Macarthur Square last Tuesday. What a great store it is. If you haven’t been yet, make sure you check it out as it stocks all of the Wests Tigers merchandise. Pop in and see Dee and the friendly girls there. Tell them I sent you!
We have one more home game at Campbelltown this season against Parramatta on Monday night, August 6\. It would be great to see a packed Campbelltown crowd for these two clashes against our western Sydney rivals.
Before that though, we have a very big game against the North Queensland Cowboys next Monday night in Townsville. It is going to be tough on two fronts. The first is the Cowboys themselves. They are a quality side with five-eighth Jonathan Thurston in superb form. Their forward pack boats Origin and international players so it is up to our big blokes to match fire with fire.
The second reason why the Cowboys are tough to beat at home is simply the trip to Townsville. It is a very long flight from Sydney and can be taxing on players. I much prefer to fly over to Auckland to play the Warriors than do the trip to Townsville.
Fortunately for us, we have international back-rowers Adam Blair and Gareth Ellis back this week. Gaz is raring to go after being out with a broken foot since round 5\. I reckon Blairy will put in something special too after missing last week’s win over Penrith through suspension. He has been tremendous for us in his first season at the Club.
