Tigers and Storm Player Loan Swap

- The loan deal has hit frustrating "roadblocks" from the NRL, says Craig Bellamy.

Despite both clubs and players being keen to get the deal done, Bellamy said on Thursday that he was unsure it would happen, with salary cap and contract issues stalling the agreement.

**Bellamy says doubts about NRL player swap**

Melbourne's landmark player trade with Wests Tigers has hit frustrating NRL "roadblocks", according to Storm coach Craig Bellamy.
Melbourne were looking to do a one-season swap of their promising young hooker Harry Grant for Tigers centre Paul Momirovski.
With captain Cameron Smith and feisty Kiwi Brandon Smith ahead of Grant, the Storm wanted to give the 21-year-old, who has played two first grade games, more experience.
They are light on outside backs while the Tigers need more depth at No.9 after the retirement of Robbie Farah and an injury to Jacob Liddle.
Momirovki had visited Melbourne while Grant was also keen to get the deal done, but Bellamy said on Thursday that he was unsure it would happen.
"I'm not quite sure where it is at the moment," he said.
"It appeared to be a simple thing to me and the two clubs and two players were very happy for it to happen for 12 months, but there's been a fair few roadblocks put up by the NRL."
The deal, which has the blessing of the Rugby League Players' Association, requires the clubs to terminate the players' existing contracts and for them to sign 12-month deals with their new clubs identical to those they were on.

Roosters, Rabbits and Broncs have been in Greenbergs ear.

More likely reminding him about who controls the NRL when push comes to shove

NRL pissing about 30k already paid to a player. Geez. Just get them to sign a new contract for this season for 9 months, at 3/4 of the total of their previous salary...
Its really not very complicated stuff

I think the problem possibly is that the clubs wanted to keep the players on their current contracts to have no impact on their salary caps! i.e we pay Momos his contract and that comes of our cap and Storm pay Grants salary and that comes out of their cap. I would guess that Grant would be on a lower salary than Momos and that is part of the appeal for Melbourne. With the NRL wanting the players to sign new contracts that takes away some of the appeal for the Storm!

Souths may benefit from a similar deal as they are after forwards but are short of cap space. A loan deal such as this maybe attractive.

I don't think people realize how big this deal is for our season

i do

harry is a MASSIVE boost for our squad

a good hooker is the difference between winning games and losing

This sort of agreement represents innovation and progress. Concepts that are foreign to the boffins at NRL HQ. They are probably struggling to understand a proposal that is both logical and mutually agreeable by all parties concerned.

On the surface it would appear to be a simple matter for each player to cxl their existing contracts and each player to have 2 new contracts drawn. There’s no real need for the NRL or players association to get involved. Let’s not forget that it was Bellamy who had originally wanted the option of having Grant return at any time during the season should Smith be unable to play. It could be fear of losing out , or lawyers maximising billing which is slowing The implementation? Who would know???
You could look at Stefano’s situation and call that a WT player loan to the eels?

Why doesn't the NRL give their reasons for not allowing this to go ahead as it currently stands
That way we can all understand their decision making
I would love to see a complete overhaul of the NRL Hierarchy because I sometimes think these guys have no Idea
The NRL need to employ some impartial ex NRL players and or Coaches
Ex Players who love the game
Ex Players who completely understand the game
And
Ex Players who know what needs to change to make this a fair and even competition so ALL, And I emphasize ALL supporters can enjoy watching the game again and supporting their teams because we all have a chance at success
Sometimes I think the guys at the top are just trying to justify their pay packets
Get rid of them and put someone competent in

Maybe Bellamy can be one of those people

Sorry to rant but please move to another thread if required

I honestly have no idea how good Harry is? But if he is second behind Smith then he probably rates higher than existing choices?
So yeh, the dummy half role has become increasingly important to success because he is usually the first to handle the ball in each play. We need to get this right!!!

NRL is full of dinosaurs. They need to go spend some time in an NBA and NFL front office so they can grasp the concept. Those leagues can deal in 50+ million in contract trades in a day. NRL can’t get Their heads around 30k In 2 weeks.

NBA does it in hours - the other day there was a massive trade across 4 teams involving 12 players and a heap of cash.

Trades would be massive for the NRL and take things to another level, could also reduce contracts being broken

The fact that the NRL can't get out of the way of this happening is a testament to their mediocrity. Big Business, even Fox Sports must be sitting back watching this thinking how amateurish the NRL is.
