Tigers claw woeful Magpies to shreds, reinforcing case for teams to merge

ANY doubt still remaining about whether the Wests Tigers should merge their Western Suburbs and Balmain Tigers NSW Cup teams should all but be put to bed after yesterday's 76-4 thrashing of the Magpies at Leichhardt Oval.

The eighth-placed Tigers made a meal of the wooden-spooners, relegating the Fibros to their 24th consecutive loss of the season for a winless winter. Balmain Ryde Eastwood five-eighth Dane Chisholm ran in five of the side's 14 tries for a man-of-the-match performance. All the Magpies could do was resume their standard position behind the try line as the Tigers piled on enough points to have scoreboard attendant complaining of RSI.

A quick read of the Magpies' team sheet and one was quick to discover why - not one surname triggered the memory. Balmain were sprinkled with NRL players such as Joel Reddy and Ray Cashmere.

But with Western Suburbs so far refusing to merge with the Tigers, it's blindingly obvious starving the side of NRL talent has been a ploy to force the Magpies into submission.

Ryde Eastwood Leagues, naming-rights sponsor of the Tigers, wants to sponsor a merged side. The Wests Tigers want a merged NSW Cup side to support the NRL side. The Magpies' argument is built on emotion; a matter of saving what's left of a once-great club. Ryde Eastwood and the Tigers' decision on the other hand is based almost purely on business logic and the future success of the NRL club - both on the field and financially.

And unfortunately for passionate Western Suburbs supporters, yesterday's result only stood as a brutal reminder of how far the heritage club has fallen. Ardent fans flew a ''Magpie Muscle'' flag on the hill as the points were piled on, but sadly, they were all but outnumbered by the players themselves.

If it was to be the Magpies' last match as a senior side, it's one to be forgotten, just like the season past. Supporters of the club remain defiant but yesterday's display is evidence a merger is the only option to maintain what little dignity the Magpies have left - barring a financial miracle.

Five-eighth and former Storm player Chisholm opened the scoring of the match with the first of his five tries, converted by fullback Sean Meaney.

So fluent was the home side this scribe could barely lift his head to watch as tries came play after play.

Centre Tim Simona added another seven minutes short of the half, with Chisholm collecting his third and fourth minutes later. Meaney's boot made it 48-0 at the break.

It was more of the same after the break, Reddy scoring a double inside the first 14 minutes of the second stanza to have the score at 58-nil.

It took 56 minutes for the Magpies to score their first try, prop Seffa Silafau pushing off all comers to barge over the line. Reddy collected his hat-trick and reserve Francis Tuigamala scored in the final minute as the margin got even more embarrassing for the proud Magpies.

What a harsh score line. Id like ti see those teams combine. Imagine the team we could have next year. What is everyone else's thoughts of merging?

i would like to see them kept seperate but have the plauyers aligned to each team , so if reddy goes back he plays for wests etc , we still have to keep the identity and tradision around ,

Still makes you wonder why at some stage that Chisholm wasn't given a run with the NRL side

Chisholm is on a 2 year deal isn't he ??

Both teams need to go back to Bundy cup and have one state cup side. Its stupdity to split our reserves over two sides which then go out and bash each no other club would do this.St George has one feeder club why cant we.Im an old Balmain supporter but i dont give a rats butt if BRET disappear from state cup, If Wests are our team in SC then i will happily support them as long as both sides of the merger are not playing each other.Wests,Balmain or preferably Wests Tigers.

Wests declined the merger because Balmain are broke , they believe it is only a matter of time until Balkan crumbles financially and Wests are left as the sole NSW cup team

All this season has done is further disinfranchise the Wests side from the joint venture. Nothing more. Well done to the Wests Tigers board and management.

So I guess Ryde Eastwoods involvement has stymied that plan … That and the WT's decision to use BRET as the clubs sole reserve grade side.

Wests have been happy with a merger, but Balmain didn't like one particular condition of it, and said no. People should stop putting all the blame on one side all the time, without knowing all the facts. It always gets protrayed that Balmain are saints and Wests are the villians. As for financials, I can assure you that there are no issues for Wests in that area. This Josh Rakic bloke is a nobody know nothing and is in for a rather large suprise very soon. He's completely wrong!

I thought the Wests Tigers board AND the balmain board wanted a merged NSW Cup team.
The Magpies have themselves to blame, and if they go around again next year it will be more of the same.

Go for it Magpies…Balmain will probable merge with the Weststigers to form a reserve grade side sponsored by Ryde Eastwood and have all contracted players and fringe players as to there entitlement.Magpies can stay in the comp and good on you enjoy..the other 99.9 of us get a club to support with 3 grades sounds good to me.

Well said. Finally someone who has an idea of whats going on. The rest of the jibberers in this forum only post what suits there own agenda.

Be careful though slick. The powers to be on this forum will come down hard on you for having a differing view and contradicting the propaganda.

The next 3 months will be proof if the Wests group have finally grown a pair.

Business logic…..hmmm. Why does Ryde-Eastwood have to be involved? Where is the logic of their involvement?

Why can't the "merged" state cup team be sponsored by Wests Campbelltown or Wests Ashfield?

A WT nsw cup team would be majority funded by Ashfield. Ryde-Eastwood have no purpose or benefit being involved in a WT nsw cup side.

The financial status of Balmain FC will be the major factor in any decision re a potential wt nsw cup team. Wests Leagues Campbelltown will not be part of it if Balmain FC cannot meet their share of the coin.
