Tigers future plans

Due to injuries and other issue this season hasn't gone the way a lot of us would have liked and it doesn't look to be getting any better. I hate to say but I think we are almost done for this year but that is not what concerns me. What concerns me is our direction in the future because I can except that this has just been a rough season under a new coach with a different team but who can tell me where we are headed. In my opinion this is our outlook

Moving Forward we have got to get fast backs and some big hard forwards. Honestly rebuilding our team will be hard , were locked into some bad contracts. But I agree with a lot of the you that we have guys who haven't pulled there weight in ages. In my opinion these would be the contracts I would be trying to shift:
- Blair ( No one will have him at his $)
- Ayshford ( maybe)
- Lawerence ( IMO hasn't shown that pace to beat his defender since the hip injury)
- Miller ( Just never was )
- Moltzen ( IMO he just doesn't fit in with the dynmaic of the team he isn't really a Fullback and the halfback role is being kept by Braith for Luke Brooks in a couple of seasons)
- Galloway ( I know shocker, but tbh he is just never on the field)
- Utai ,Tuquri , Reddy , Masada and Meaney ( all can go and they r all off contract at seasons end  )

But with that being said I believe our core is actually quite good with guys like Tedesco , Koroibete ,Nofoaluma , Siro , Farah , Woods , Buchanan , Sue and Marshall the spine of this team is not exactly a lost cause.

Recruitment will be another big issue for the tigers moving for but first they have got to change there recruitment strategy and/or recruiting personnel and maybe even the entire administration barring Mick Potter. In terms of coaching I believe Potter has a lot of ability as a coach and can do a good job with this team. It is the assistants that pop up time and time again like Royce. Top player in his day but I don't feel as though in his time with the tigers he has contributed a huge amount as an assistant. The last time we were good a couple of years ago Steve Folkes was involved. We need to have a defensive minded coach like that involved in the running of this team. So if a guy like Folkes was available I would pursue hard. Todd Payton could also be promoted to assistant coach in the next 5 years because I feel as though once Potter goes when he does Payton will be the next coach.

Recruitment is something that has to addressed. We need to stop signing these solid 1st graders and trying to turn them into champions which IMO makes no sense. Looking at the off contract players on Zero Tackle these are the guys in the near future that would be n our price range that have a bit of potential or fulfill a serious need at their position.

2013 offseason

Martin Taupau ( huge prop not wanted at Canterbury could really turn into a perfect compliment to aaron Woods with his brute strength and force he relies on rather than woods footwork at the line)

Dale Copeley ( An outside back with a lot of potential something our outside backs don't have a lot of. @ the broncos it is a long jam with a lot of talent in the outside backs. This make me think a guy like Copeley is a gettable target. It could also lead to Lawrence playing in the back row which may revive his career.)

Lama Tasi / Martin Kennedy ( If we miss out on getting Josh Kennedy from the rooster who is looking for a release, I say he pursue his roosters team mate Lama Tasi. On a loaded roosters team he is barely getting an opportunity but at the tigers where we need to add some size he could thrive.)

We may pick up a few more guys for depth but those 3 guys are the ones we should be after.

This is what I would do if I had the power sorry for making it so long but this is the team we all care deeply about :sign:

No matter what tigers 4 life

Great post.
Recruitment needs to be addressed we are the worst in the NRL we look like a bunch of amateurs.
The best we can do like someone else said is sign plodders and guys over 30.

Adam Blair worst signing ever. Last year he was finding his feet..what is the excuse this year ?

Canberra beat Melbourne tonight and they had things that WT don't;

1\. go forward- Two forwards got carried off, but 5 other forwards ran over 100 metres. I'd suggest WT forwards have NEVER achieved this.

2\. Speed/footwork in the back line- Ferguson, Robinson, Wighton, Earl, Lee- all grass burners who can step- between them they ran 650m for the game!!!!!

None of these guys are Marquee players- but the game is pretty simple- Muscle your way up the middle, bend the line, then let foot work and speed out wide score tries!

Good post tigerman2005 i cant disagree with anything you say except Ayshford and Galloway. Removal of all the deadwood at the club is essential both at the playing level and support staff. No more jobs for the boys.

This is a great post.

On thing I will say, is that, in my opinion, Ayshford is well worth holding on to. With good service from his halves, he can tear big holes in the left side defence of the opposition. He did in the dragons game. In the last 30 minutes, when we had more ball, he was everywhere. He just needs to learn to hold the ball with two hands.

He will find his 2010 form again

I can pretty much agree with everything op said.
I like Martin Taupau, he is the goods.
Not too keen on Lama Tasi or Kennedy - but no doubt we need to sign some props.

Haven't seen what Gavet can do, so he might be worth hanging onto if he comes good.

@ tigerman2005…completely agree..including Galloway

@ russelldp...thats how Rugby League is played..yep, when was the last time we played a game like that with such speed and aggression and a half leading around the paddock.

@ tigergirlz...yes CC to potter..but I worry that he does not have much of a power base in this setup and therefore his hands might be tied.

I don't think signing fringe players will turn it around to be honest , we need a signinifcant second rower ,quality prop ,at least one prominent centre ,and then some solid first graders

But the next problems are these

1/Do players want to come to the Tigers ,we have an unproven coach an NRL level , a side that most opposition players would class as soft ,internal problems ,back up coaches who aren't doing the job and a 7 and 9 who won't pass the control of the team over to anybody it seems (well maybe Anasta )

2/ Do we have the money to attract talent to the club ,with the Sheens debacle hanging over our heads like an albatross

3/Are potential signings happy with having three home grounds ,its pretty hard to create a fortress like AAMI ,Suncorp,Brookvale when you might only play at a ground once every six weeks

4/We are basically a bottom four side ,with much work to do to become even competitive let alone be force

5/ Carrying many players who aren't NRL standard to start with or since injury issues

/ Doesn't at least 12-13 clubs sound more attractive than us to sign with , so if we wan't to attract talent we will need to offer overs

Tigeman yes we need a huge clean out and yes I agree with most of the players you have nominated. However you haven't mentioned who we would replace them with that would be available and half those players ave contracts eg Lawrence 2015 Moltzen 2016 Blair 2016….... We need learn how to utilize these players or really get up them??? The problem unfortunately can't be fixed at the click of a finger!!!!

@Eye Of Da Tiger - I aggree with u that yeah it would be very nice to think that Lawrence, Moltzen and Blair are all going to just going to pull finger and start p;laying but this club holds onto guys cause there good blokes rather than good footballers. We have to be realistic. Moltzen is now another 18 months or more to getting back to full form and even if we hold him for that long Brooks and Tedesco will develop @ HB and FB and the were does he fir into this team? Lawrence IMO is either a backrower or at another club in a few years because he is still a hard hitter and a good dfender that likes to hit the gap , He just isn't quick enough to play in the centres. But Yeah overall I know what u mean we are locked into some very bad contracts and it's bad because I don't see a way that Blair and Moltzen pan out at the tigers.

You win premierships on form, not sentimentality. Yes we are a team full of juniors who we had high hopes for, but it comes down to results - if they're not giving us results it needs to be a fond farewell and thanks for your time.

But they are giving results? the old codgers arent. Honestly, the only players who have played well this season besides Farah and Galloway have been young guns! Woods - 22, Teddy - 20, Koro - 20/21, Buchanan - 20, BMM - 21, Sirro - 19, Simona - 21, Sue - 21\. Add in brooks, moses, santi and maybe lovett and you've got a very strong set of youngsters between 18-22 and in around 2015 most will be just about to peak!

It's a shared frustration and I just wanted to bring some reality your thread. I wish it was like the real world me and you would probably get sacked if we didn't perform in our jobs. They should put performance clauses in these bloody contracts. :bulb:

Good post - all I would add is that I'm not sure we want to hang onto Benji, Unless he can turn his form around but i'd like to look to the future with Miller & Brooks, Moses in a couple of years, we have Anasta until then as well as Sirro who can play halves until he starts to move to the back row.

I think the days of the "dancy, prancy, fancy" Tigers is done. We need to look at two stable halves players – 1 a ball runner, 1 a ball controller.

Sorry should've made myself clearer.

I'm talking about guys like Lawrence and Moltzen who have played in the Wests Tigers system since schoolboys. Unfortunately they just haven't kicked on to be the quality players we had hoped. It's nice to see players have their entire career with the one club but we're not getting results.

The Tigers need a clear platform to work from before they should enter the marketplace for talent… They need to build a Productivity Matrix that identifies the basic needs of the 'Game Plan'. This Game Plan can not have names attached, it needs to be built from scratch and identifies what 'type' of personal we need.

Once this is done, it will identify a Structure for a 30 man Squad [still no names]… EG: 6 x Props; 6 x Backrow/Prop; 3 x Roving Forwards; 2 x Hookers/Dummy Half etc etc. From there they need to asign a dollar value to each position within the structure. Once completed, only then do we place names into the structure and play a little fish with the $ amounts.

Upon completion, it will give us a clearer picture on which players to go after, and which players we should stay away from... I would assume the club currently has something similar, but the recent decision to re-sign Fulton and recruit Richards would suggest it is somewhat lost?!

Haha don't take this the wrong way but that sounded like sheens speak.
A sensible, technical businesslike approach in rugby league. Be careful you'll get pilloried.
