Tigers in Sheens talks as rivals lurk

![](/images/stories/news-imgs/sheens.jpg)Wests Tigers are ready to step up contract talks with coach Tim Sheens in the coming weeks as they attempt to finalise an agreement which will mean the game's most experienced coach spends a decade at the club.

Tigers chief executive Steve Humphreys confirmed he had held initial talks with Sheens and wanted to sit down again with the 60-year-old within a fortnight.

Sheens, who led the club to within one win of a grand final this year, is one of several coaches who will come off contract at the end of next season. Others include seven-time premiership winner Wayne Bennett, South Sydney's John Lang and Penrith's Matthew Elliott.

"Tim and I have already had some dialogue," Humphreys said.

"It was always our plan to take that dialogue to the next (level) once the Four Nations was complete and he had a short break.

"We're still on that timing. We will get together over the next fortnight. I think there is a desire from both of us to bring it to some result so we get some clarity on what's happening beyond 2011."

Sheens, who led the Tigers to the 2005 premiership, was under pressure entering last season but did more than enough to warrant an extension. His side was beaten by eventual premiers St George Illawarra in the preliminary final.

He will enter his ninth year as coach of the Tigers in 2011, meaning even a one-year extension would result in him notching a decade at the club. For some players, including Tigers captain Robbie Farah and superstar five-eighth Benji Marshall, Sheens is the only coach they have known.

The four-time premiership winner has coached more than 600 games in first grade, including grand final wins with Canberra and the Tigers. In recent years he has been consistently linked with South Sydney, whose owner Russell Crowe confirmed on American television this week that the club was on the look-out for a coach to replace Lang in 2012.

Seven-time premiership winner Wayne Bennett has been widely touted as that man, although Rabbitohs chief executive Shane Richardson insists no talks had taken place. Regardless, rumours persist that if a deal is not done, it is only a matter of time before a switch to Redfern is finalised.

Bennett is currently on holidays but will return early next month and is expected to inform Dragons officials of his plans during the off-season. He has also been linked with a return to Brisbane Broncos or a switch to North Queensland Cowboys.

Outside of Bennett, Sheens is easily the most successful coach coming on to the open market. Asked whether he was aware of rumours linking Sheens with Souths, Humphreys said: "That's not a motivating factor for us.

"It's more about what's right for the Tigers and what's right for Tim. Obviously I have heard (the rumours). There's lots of rumours in rugby league.

"That one has been around for quite a while."

Great..Another Sheens thread…woo

am a bit suprised this has not been merged into a Coach Tim Sheens mega thread.
so anything relating to him is in there.

there will come a day when he does move on from the club.
when that happens, thank him for his efforts and contribution in winning the 2005 comp, and helping mould the club to what it is today. :wahoo: .

The best thing about coaching is you can never be too old to coach. So for a coach, the phrase: "signed for life" would actually make sense. So I say sign him up for life.

There will probably be some people who think he should move on at the end of 2011 but unless the Tigers can snare Wayne Bennett then I'd be inclined to give Sheens another year, or potentially sound out Folkes interest in the top job.

I can see Folkesy stepping up to coach and I would be happy with that in the future. For now though Im very fond of Sheensy. Lets sign him up for 2 more. After getting the playing roster right this year - see what he has done. Few injuries and Moltz back at 7 next year we will be unstoppable

Why

Agreed. The first time the guy is on a one year contract, the team makes an impact since winning the comp.

Keep it that way.

i hope the tigers sign sheens up for another few years. i think that with the talent we already have and with the number of promising juniors coming through i can only see good things ahead for the tigers. sheens i think is a good influence on the the younger players in the their attitudes on and off the field. as long as the tigers keep improving and make the finals then i reckon sheens should stay on as coach. stability in the coaching staff is a great thing to have and something that most other clubs would envy.

He's finally got the mix right after 4 frustrating seasons, the acquisition of Folkes has been huge with us learning to win ugly, I wouldnt go overboard but on the back of this season I guess hes earnt some more time here, breathing space for maybe a couple of years to call his own shots.
Woulda happened had we missed again regardless, but at least it has now been earnt
Just a tip Tim, drop the digs at the ''so called fans''….it does you no favours.

My worry is how many players have get-out clauses in their contracts if Sheens is not the coach? If Sheens walks, he walks. But I'd be more concerned about key players deciding whether to go with him.

Anyone know more about this?

I am pretty sure Benji did have a clause in his contract re Sheens leaving but i beleive that clause was taken out when he signed his contract extension. not sure of any other players

100% correct - This has now been removed.

Always good to have the Australian coach on as club coach. While taking nothing away from the Tigers players that made the squad this year, Tim would have more influence on who makes the Aus squad and can get some more of the tigers players into that environment. Which can only help their development and bring that back to club level.

Masterstroke …... and really a "no-brainer".

This club owes so much to Tim considering where we were when he arrived to where we are now. As DD says above, having the national coach as our coach can only be advantageous. I doubt any of our players would have donned the green and gold had anyone else been coach.

Having Folkes in the fold has improved the mental toughness immeasurably ........ he is the "x-factor" that has been lacking in recent seasons.

It augurs well for a very bright decade ahead when we know those making the decisions at the top are fully professional and experienced in dealing with different situations. Its now over to the players to do what they do best.
