Tigers looking to buy back-up

Wests Tigers coach Mick Potter says the injury-riddled club may have to go to the market to scour for reinforcements amid fears Marika Koroibete's foot injury could be worse than first suspected.
Koroibete limped off Leichhardt Oval in Friday night's win over Parramatta and club medicos thought he may have suffered a similar injury to the one which sidelined Gareth Ellis for three months last year. The Fijian winger had scans on the injury on Saturday and is hoping for good news.
The Tigers already have a bulging casualty ward which includes props Keith Galloway, Matt Groat and James Gavet, while Mosese Fotuaika died in tragic circumstances just as a first-grade call-up appeared within reach. The joint-venture club is short of wingers with Lote Tuqiri, Matt Utai and, possibly, Koroibete all battling ailments.
Potter said he had never experienced the bizarre bad luck of having so many injuries confined to two key positions. The only positive injury news was the return of Curtis Sironen to the bench in the National Youth Competition.

''We need some front-rowers,'' he said. ''We've got some young blokes who are doing a good job for us in Ava [Seumanufagai] and Jack Buchanan. But eventually it's going to wear them down. We just need to bolster our [broader] squad up as well. We'll have to find something in the short term.''
Potter said none of his troops were expected back next week and he was sweating on the scan results for Koroibete. ''I'm hoping for the best but you never know with these foot injuries; they could be mild, they could be long term,'' he said.
''Just the way he limped off the field, he's a tough character and he wouldn't have come off if there wasn't something wrong with him.
''Maybe in three weeks we might have Matt Groat back on board, but he'll have to work his way back in. I'm hopeful with him, so we'll wait and see. He's coming back from a foot injury as well.''
The Tigers overcame a disappointing Eels side, the win all but sealed when Benji Marshall caught the defence napping with a quick tap. Replays suggested the Kiwi playmaker's foot may not have made contact with the ball in a play which changed the momentum of the game.
The victory was the second in succession for the Tigers, but Potter warned a repeat performance would not be good enough against in-form Manly on Thursday. ''We improved a little bit but geez, we've got some work to do,'' he said.
''With Manly and the Storm over the next couple of weeks, they are top class. They don't have dips.''

I'm liking Potter's honesty. I'm not liking all the bloody injuries to our big units and speedsters though :frowning:

crap just realised: 6 injuries and it's only round 3 O_O
potter's obviously shocked by his situation from what i can tell from the quotes… like his honesty though

I honestly believe we are cursed when it comes to injuries. This has been going on for so many years. How can Marika's injury, which simply looked like a sprained ankle, end up like this? Every team has injuries of course, but ours are almost always long term or even career ending ones - it's bloody ridiculous! When was the last time we had most of our squad available throughout a whole season? 2005? I simply can't remember, but I'm really over this crap.

We were blessed in 2005 mate. It would be nice to have good run without any major injuries for a change.

If there's anything positive to take out of this - Potter is well aware that our young props will eventually ware out and he's acknowledged that we need some experienced props to take off the workload. That decision will save a possible future burnout in our props.

We need someone ASAP as far as the props go

Wingers are a dime a dozen and we have heaps of options

Nofa ,Simona ,Meaney , Utai, even Tedesco if required

Potter telling it like it is. If Korro is out, he can be replaced with any of the above names. Its still the forwards we need. Potter should have some contacts in England, pick up out of favour players(Good Only) or homesick aussie players. Send out some feelers mick, that is if you haven't already.

the thing about english props is that any prop who is in the starting line up isnt likely to get a release from their clubs.. so the best we can get is a 5th choice prop of a english super league club.. not a good place to be at

Utai and Meaney should be last resorts,Meaney doesn't even look good in reserve grade.

I agree, the training team should be held some what responsible with years of the same trend

I think our best chance may be a struggling NRL club with cap issues looking to reinvent their roster and possibly may be happy to move a player or two along…..sometimes a change of scenery coach background can do wonders for a player

The good thing about this article is that Potter sees the problem. The smart thing about putting it out there is that it should have disgruntled players ringing their managers to suss out the opportunity

100 % smeg , players need to know we are serious about a prop , how many players not getting a start in other clubs would there be , fresh club , new coach and a chance to play with guys like Robbie has to be a few out their

he can say it as he had zero input into his team , and after what our club has done regarding buying players and letting players go the balls in his court , it will also remind players at our club to put in each week if you want a go in first grade
