Tigers shattered at Farah's loss
Ben Horne AAP Sun, Jun 17, 2012 - 7:08 PM

Wests Tigers players found out little more than an hour before kick-off against the Sydney Roosters on Sunday that the mother of their captain Robbie Farah had lost her battle with pancreatic cancer.

Coach Tim Sheens had to talk distressed players through the news of Sonia Farah's death before the match.

And with Farah grieving with his family, stand-in captain Benji Marshall led an emotional side out onto Leichhardt Oval and shed tears on the field during the minute's silence.

The Tigers lost 42-28 and had their seven-match winning streak ended, but the day's other events loomed larger.

Farah sent a text to Marshall, Sheens and other players an hour and a half before kick-off, and Sheens described it as one of the most difficult days of his coaching career.

"I think they're feeling it right now … more so now than before the game. I know the minute's silence really upset a few of them," said Sheens with players too upset to talk post-match.

"To talk about the game today seems a waste of time. It's something I'm not particularly interested in.

"It's a close club and the team will be there for Rob and his family.

"Beau (Ryan) spoke really well on behalf of the players ... that we were tight and would stick together and get Robbie through it.

"It's about Robbie this week."

Farah had played the game of his career last Wednesday night, making 63 tackles in a heroic performance for NSW in their win over Queensland.

He was only told after the match that his mother had been admitted to hospital and did not attend.

On Wednesday morning he will attend his mother's funeral after he was by her side in hospital when she passed away at the age of 63.

Sonia Farah's battle with cancer had been a source of inspiration for her son this season, ever since he was forced to fly back to Australia from England during last year's Four Nations tournament upon hearing of her diagnosis.

Wests Tigers chief executive Steve Humphreys said Farah and the rest of the team would be given all the time and support they need.

"He'll let us know how he wants to respond, we'll catch up with him over the next couple of days and let him determine when he's ready to come back," said Humphreys, who admitted the news could have an impact on the Tigers' season.

"It's certainly going to have a significant effect.

"With respect, we always knew Sonia's illness would have this impact this year but how that manifests itself we'll have to wait and see. I'm confident the boys and Robbie will respond in a positive way but at the end of the day they're human beings so we'll have to take it one day at a time."

I have no doubt Robbie will play next week and play great. I also have no doubt that the guy is going to be so mentally drained over the next month or 2 everything will just be a blur to him

Without seeming hard or selfish, personally Ive found these situations are best handled by getting back into your usual everyday routine as soon as practically possible…...but everyone is different and this must be respected.

Very sad day today. May Mrs Sonia Farah R.I.P <3

tell you what, as sad as it is to lose someone that close to you, i do see some positives in it. luckily for him, he was right by her side she passed away and that she didn't have to suffer that much (8 months?).

my grandpa died of mouth cancer and unfortunately no one was at his bedside when it happened. the moment he shared with his mum just before the event will always stay in his mind.

also, an hour before kick off.. wow! i would like to just apologise coz i did think that they knew of this beforehand and even though their discipline on field was excusable, some of it i thought wasnt.. however getting this shocking news an hour before kick off is extremely devastating.

Today's game is nothing ….. The team should not be criticized at all for the loss... For they suffered a bigger loss that we can't possibly comprehend...

Not to fussed by the game today. When I saw the boys during the minutes silence- I've never been prouder of this club. Football is just a game, or for some, a job- but life comes from family & friends. The Tigers showed today that they are more than just a place of work.

Doesn't matter when Robbie comes back. Whenever it is, that'll be the right time.

Definitley agree with that. I wondered before kick-off what affect the news would have had on the guys and pretty much discovered how much it had during the minute silence when Benji was in tears. I've never seen a player ever in tears before on the field (that wasn't injury related anyway). How are you suppose to have you're head in the game after that? even when Ryan scored there was zero emotion from him like there usually is. He just got up and walked back sheepishly. They were a lost football team out there today, and i'm actually proud of that (funny as that sounds) coz it means there is a strong bond there that they felt the pain of one of their brothers. We'll be back, and so will Robbie

You have summed it up perfectly

Robbie's said before that Football has been a way for him to escape lately, and he's put in some exceptional performances through all this. Maybe getting back into footy might help his spirits a little. Origin will be really tough for him.. I think the fact that it was the last game she saw him play will be a really raw memory for him.
