Tigers surge into NRL title favouritism

David Beniuk AAP Fri, Sep 09, 2011 - 10:54 PM

The Wests Tigers surged into equal favouritism with Melbourne for the NRL premiership after Friday night's 21-12 win over 2010 champions St George Illawarra.

TAB Sportsbet reacted to the Tigers' impressive second half comeback by installing them at $3.75 for the title, equal with minor premiers the Storm.

Manly are $5.50, Brisbane $6.50 and the Dragons $7.50.

Tigers coach Tim Sheens was giving no credence to his fourth-placed side's rising stocks.

"Eight weeks ago no one tipped us and we won eight (in a row)," he said.

"Then we went back to no one tipping us tonight so I don't really give a damn about what the bookies are doing.

"We just need to concentrate on our own football to be quite honest."

The Tigers looked to have fallen over when they fell behind 12-6 after a clinical first half Dragons performance.

But they turned the game on its head in the second 40 minutes with aggressive defence and stunning ball movement that would have sent a shudder through the rest of the competition.

Captain Robbie Farah said the turnaround stemmed from the confidence that had been in the side all year.

"The belief's there, it's been there for a while, no one gave us a chance tonight," he said.

"We believed, we just kept plugging away."

Sheens may get injured centre Chris Lawrence (hamstring) and forward Todd Payten (calf) back if other results mean the Tigers play next weekend.

But the coach isn't looking that far ahead.

"We'll just lick our wounds over the weekend and let everyone else bash each other and see where it falls on Monday," Sheens said.

Means nothing really…if saints had wone they'd be the same, odds shorten as week/teams drop off thru the finals

The Tigers still have a bit to do yet, but did anyone get on when we blew out before this winning run? I got on at 19-1 on Betfair. Should have had more on, but at the time we were going really badly and it was just a bit of hopeful money.

We are back to 3rd favourite now at $5 on Sportstab. Storm and Manly are paying $3.50 and $4.25 respectively.

You could get anywhere between 26-1 to 34-1 11 weeks ago nothing compared to the 150 -1 in 2005
Actually about time I reminded Missus about that
She wouldn't let me put on $50 when they got to 150-1 after Broncos loss in 2005 :brick:

Makes sense. Those teams are going to get the week off. We're going to have to beat Melbourne in Melbourne in week three as well.

I'm sure you've mentioned this to her at least 150 times… this month

Piece-a-piss…no one can stop us when we get going.

Betting odds are an economy, not sports analysis. They probably jacked down the odds because they expected a lot of people to back the tigers after friday's win. They'll do it again when we beat the warriors, but come the semi final, when we'll play the Storm, I don't think the bookies will be so kind to us.

I dont get it.

We have a rookie fullback
An ageing injured winger
A fullback playing 1/2
Chronically injured hooker/captain
We lost our best percentage defender
And put our best tackler on the bench.
But we have 2 tv stars.
So how crap must the other teams be?
