New Wests Tigers chief executive Grant Mayer has reassured supporters that NRL games will continue to be played at Leichhardt and Campbelltown.

As revealed by Fairfax Media on Thursday, Mayer has been handed the task of running the joint-venture club following the departure of Stephen Humphreys.

Just hours after signing his new contract, Mayer was bullish about the Tigers' chances of becoming an NRL powerhouse, setting the ambitious goals of a finals appearance in 2015 and a grand-final berth for the following year.

The franchise announced on Thursday that the team would be playing the round-24 clash with St George Illawarra at the SCG, marking 50 years since the 1963 decider between the St George Dragons and Western Suburbs Magpies. And Mayer promised to deliver more ''good news'' to fans next week. But perhaps the most positive message is the commitment to continue playing games at Leichhardt Oval and Campbelltown Sports Ground, traditional venues that appeared in the firing line following the game's strategy of stadiums consolidation.

''I can absolutely guarantee to our members and fans that Campbelltown and Leichhardt are absolutely crucial to this club,'' Mayer said. ''There is no doubt that Leichhardt needs and deserves daytime football and we'll be working very hard with the NRL to ensure that happens next year. Campbelltown also deserves some great football games. We've got to work hard with the community to get back on board. It's been a tough year but I'm sure they will be right behind us when we include them in our plans going forward.''

Those plans include a sharp turnaround in the team's fortunes. While the Tigers are languishing in 15th spot only above Parramatta, Mayer believes the club's talented juniors - coupled with the addition of some experienced players to the roster - could have them primed for a grand final appearance as soon as 2016.

''You have to have some lofty ambitions in this game and I'm quite prepared, as an administrator, to say that's what we should be focused on,'' Mayer said.

Let's hope all the matches at Leichhardt are daytime. Does anybody have any idea what is the "good news" Mayer has promised to fans next week?

That will do the members numbers a lot of good..congratulations management ..languishing in the past you got to love it. This saves me a lot of money as we want to be members again but not at these CRAP grounds! Mr Mayer if you want this club to flourish make the hard decisions.

I love following such a wealthy club that can afford to throw money away. Can you imagine following one of those teams that struggle for money?

Don't know why Mayer has to tell us our finishing position in seasons 2014-16.
Sounds a bit like Wayne Swans predictions for a budget surplus … Where's he now ?

Love what their doing but don't agree with keeping 4 games at the old grounds. At most we should have 2 games at Campbelltown and 2 at Leichhardt dropping down to 1 at each in the long term. In 5 yrs time I'd expect 1 at each, 1 at SCG and the rest at Homebush

The club has absolutely no reason whatsoever to abandon C-town. As long as teams like Parra and Penrith play 12 games a yr at their home ground, theres no reason Wests can't play 6 if and when LO is no longer viable.

Sick of hearing about this stadium plan the NRL is supposedly pushing. The only time i ever hear about it is on this forum.

Just because LO's days might be coming to an end does not mean C-town has to suffer as well.

too right. I love leichardt as much as anyone but if it has to go then it has to go. Let's preserve at least half of our heritage in Cambeltown.

Great to hear some positive lofty goals set for the future.

Its not hard to work out we can work on present problems by looking forward to the future

If Wests Tigers are to play at Leichhardt and Campbelltown next year. Something MUST be done to the "big screens".

Leichhardt is the big one. Besides the toilets, the biggest issue at the ground is the "big screen". A new screen needs to be installed on the Western side of the ground. It's next to impossible to see replays if you are on the hill.

In regards to heritage, Me thinks Homebush is closer to Ashfield, and is closer to Leichhardt..

BTW Homebush sux.. i hope we don't go the way of the AFL model.. we all play on the one ground, we might as well as merge everyone and make one team… at least we will be ultra competitive..

Oh well, if we cant justify it economically what else can we do? emotions doesnt put bread on the table, though they can contribute to that process?

Never quite understood why we never considered concord oval to be our home ground ???

From a NSW gov perspective, Maintaining Campbelltown is a lot more manageable and economical then maintaining LO.

What WT prefer is the big $$$ from ANZ/SFS

Thats the real motivation behind not playing at suburban grounds. There is nothing wrong with Campbelltown Stadium:

- parking
-leagues club next door
-train station out front
-m5 motorway
-plenty of seating
- good facilities

If western sydney can get 24 games at parra and penrith, surely Campbelltown can hold four and push for 6.

Old

No corp facilities

No transport nearby

No parking

Thats why

Looks like Todd Greenberg has a plan to axed suburban grounds in the next 2-4 years. I've said for a while that Wests Tigers won't be playing out of Leichhardt in 5 years. It will be like Souths with Redfern, just return for a pre-season match.

Campbelltown is a great stadium, even Balmain fans have to realise it's a great ground with good access. It would easily be made into a 40K stadium with Grand Stands added at North and South ends of the ground.
