Tigers to play like Storm in 2014

Hoffman? He has reached Ben Creagh levels of overratedness. A good club player, occasional great games but nothing special at any high levels of the game.

How they keep making Origin is a mystery to me.

Wish we had second rower who can run his lines as effectively as he does LaT

It would be nice, but adding him to Bellamy's list of Slater/Cronk/Smith is a tad over board IMO.

Possibly , but do you think the Storm would be the same side with Fulton and BMM as their back rowers ??

You need the whole package to win premierships

No, but I'm strickly speaking about Hoffman as some sort of pillar for Bellamys success. Grouping him with arguably the best 3 players in the game was just plain odd.

He's just as big a part as Cronk, Smith and Slater, that's for sure. Like Happy said, he runs his lines extremely effectively, which finishes off a lot of plays for the Storm. If that was Fulton or Blair or Sue or virtually any of our pack it would be a completely different result. Is he in the same class individually? Probably not, but in that setting he thrives and is just as important to the game plan. (Also see 50 reasons not to buy an ex-Storm player, colloquially known as the Adam Blair effect).

And we see his effectiveness any time he doesn't get the chance to play next to Slater/Cronk/Smith. Solid but stock backrower made to look great with some stellar play makers. Hence my comparison to Creagh, especially during Dragons 2010-11 seasons. From commentators to some sections of fans, I just don't see the greatness people allude to. He does a job, but so do many others who don't get a chance to run off the QLD spine.

And Vanilla, the reason we pay Blair a crapload is because he used to do the same job as Hoffman on the edges at Storm, and was widely regarded by commentators, coaches etc as one of the premier forwards in the world….

I remember watching Hoffman as a tall skinny centre for Wests second grade team. We sure let one get away there didn't we.

Our halves running straight at the line. Isn't that what Benji did? Straight to the side line

They threw stacks of money at him knuckles, and we had plenty of other juniors to focus on at the time. Not dissimilar to the current situation with Santi. He is just a ball runner and does his job.

We didn't let him go, storm through the kitchen sink at him (most clubs were interested as well)

Storm threw plenty at him,
Prob outside of the cap like everyone else.

I still remover back to GI, when he was investigated, he had a brand new boat in his garage.

He does not have a boat license.

Sounds like we are definitely seeking a new direction and IMO we need it.You can't do the same thing all the time and expect a different result ( the definition of insanity according to Einstein) . We need new ideas, game planes and we will get different results.

Gonna play like the Storm? Do we have to? They really came back to the pack during the season last year, and were dead ducks by the time the play-offs began.

Slater is slowing down, Cronk is only the third best half in the NRL at best (behind JT and DCE and possibly Shaun Johnson as well) and Smith just makes a lot of tackles, full stop. Please don't tell me you want Robbie to play like Cameron Smith!!

Obviously, we need to maximise the effectiveness of Brooks' skill set, but even without Benji we have more attacking options than the Storm and should make use of them. IMO, if everyone is fit (!) we have a better set of 3/4s than the Storm.

What I would like to see is mistake free football with the pill and better defence. We do this, and we'll go a long way to winning more games than we lose.

getting bellamy's assistant is a good start. and potter seems to have a style that is not world's apart from bellamy's either.

Bellamy has four things that Potter doesn't

Cronk , Smith ,Slater and Hoffman

that's true. it's why we came 15th and they came in the top 4 yet again.

we have to form our own spine.

and a spine of tedesco, moses, brooks and farah (i think) would be killer! the club and coaches simply need to help them form their combinations, grow and develop properly and most importantly surround them with good players which we have quite a few of it seems.

I'm thinking our spine will be
1: Teddy
6: Austin
7: Brooks
9: Farah

Hopefully keep them fit it will be good to watch next season

To play like the Storm you need a coach like Bellamy. Is Potter in the same mold as Bellamy …. Well, not so far. Lets see what results he gets in 2014.

This is precisely what i have been calling for on this Forum for years.

In management one needs to define roles and responsibilities of his team and enforce.

It is no fluke that players deemed to be mediocre are transformed when they arrive at the Storm, this is simply getting the player to perform a function well repeatedly.

As for Potter - I think he is the closest thing out there to Bellamy.

2013 was not the year to judge Potter by.

This is an interesting debate… I remember watching a couple of Potters teams in the ESL and what I noticed most was his desire to play the big boys down the centre of the park, and let his halves work off that platform.

Melbourne are a lot more recognisable as a team that hits you at the line on the edge, but it is only achievable when the likes of there domestic forwards go down the park first. Lets hope we realise Melbourne do this very well before we simply start focusing on Brooks going to the line of taking big backrowers with him.

2014 will still rely on how good Woods, Galloway & Co eat meters down the middle!
