Tim Simona - Deregistered

It doesn't matter if the bets were $10 or whatever its still horrible look for Tim and the game that a player is allegedly betting on his direct opposite to score tries.

Regardless of who you think might be doing it or whether you feel Tim is being made an example of he got caught and he would have known deep down what a shameful action he was taking.

A 5 year penalty might be fair but he might even get life if proven. Integrity of the game is everything. As people have been saying the NRLs relationship with these betting agencies is a horrible and their inviting this sort of stuff. We used to laugh at over seas sports now its happening in our own back yard and will only get worse.

5 year ban would be a life ban Eddie in my opinion

I always liked him, but if proven true, I would expect nothing less than a life ban.

Text exchange centre of NRL probe into Wests Tigers' Tim Simona's alleged betting

A series of text messages provided to the NRL integrity unit is central to its investigation into the alleged betting activity that threatens to end the career of Wests Tigers centre Tim Simona.

Following Fairfax Media revelations that Simona had allegedly arranged bets on players he was marking to score tries against him last season, the NSW Police strike force probing claims of match fixing in the code met with the NRL integrity unit on Thursday morning.

**However it is understood the evidence gathered by the NRL against Simona may not convince police to deem it a criminal matter and launch their own investigation.**

Regardless of whether police take further interest into Simona's alleged betting movements, it doesn't change the severity of the allegations being thrown at the 25-year-old, who now faces a life ban from the sport.

Simona allegedly arranged bets on opposition players to score tries against Tigers
It is believed the claims against Simona were raised via a tip-off from a former friend with knowledge of his alleged misconduct rather than from a betting agency. The NRL is in possession of text messages and is understood to have other evidence in the brief that was shown to detectives from the Organised Crime Squad's Strike Force Nuralda, who met with integrity unit officers on Thursday.

At the game's season launch at Martin Place on Thursday, the NRL reiterated its zero tolerance policy surrounding players gambling on matches, with chief executive Todd Greenberg admitting anyone found guilty would face potential life bans from the sport.

"What I will say is that it's pretty clear – players are acutely aware of their responsibilities," Greenberg said. "They know they can't bet on rugby league. And if they do and they are found guilty, there will be significant ramifications, including career-defining decisions. Players put at great jeopardy their own careers if they consider it. It's well understood, it's contractual, there's enough education and it's pretty simple.

"It comes with a great privilege being and NRL player. There are massive penalties in place for players who do the wrong thing and taking the integrity of the game at the very core is exactly that. If and when we have to make hard decisions, we'll make them."

Despite the police taking an interest into the NRL's probe into Simona, the governing body will continue running its investigation into alleged misconduct from the off-contract Tigers back.

It is believed the bets didn't come out of Simona's account, rather the Tigers centre helped facilitate the bets through people he knew.

The news has rocked the game just a week out from the new season, with one of the sport's highest profile players warning there were no excuses for those found guilty of betting on NRL games.

"It's pretty much black and white," South Sydney captain Greg Inglis said. "You don't bet."

A sad situation.

Maybe the NRL will finally give in and stop supporting betting agencies…

Exactly, league has a history of promoting one bad addiction after another. Smokes then booze now gambling.

Time for a change.

You forgot cocaine addiction.

You cannot blame the NRL deals with sports betting agencies for this. If the NRL contracts say you can't bet or arrange bets on your behalf then you simply can't do it. If your contract says you can't wear blue hats on Fridays then you can't wear blue hats on Friday despite what everyone else is doing.
Hope this is all a bunch of bs as Simona has been a long time favourite of mine.

I'm not condoning it.
I'm just saying when you get mixed up with crims and scumbags doing scams like this there is no loyalty.

The scumbag had the presence of mind to keep the texts for this purpose. Shows you right there the kind of scum friends he must have been keeping.

… and is it pretty much black and blue when it comes to your missus?

That may be overstating it if there is only one case - was an open hand push onto a bed for which he avoided conviction. She was being into his face - my missus does worse to me than what Inglis did!

He'll probably let that one sail (or maotor boat) through to the keeper.

What are your thoughts on the Tim Simona situation paws..?

Wests Tigers centre Tim Simona was interviewed by the NRL late last season over allegations made by a former partner on social media but the game’s integrity unit dropped off the investigation when the person making the claims recanted their story.

In the latest development relating to the Tigers centre, The Australian can reveal the 25-year-old has been on the NRL’s radar for several months after allegations were first raised last year, including claims of gambling on matches.

Simona was subsequently interviewed by the integrity unit, where he denied the allegations. The person making the claims also reneged after they, too, were interviewed by the NRL, leaving the game’s governing body with little choice but to maintain a watching brief on the situation.

However, the allegations re-emerged in recent weeks and Simona now finds himself fighting to save his career amid claims he used an associate’s account to back opposition players to score tries against him in matches last season.

Simona is yet to speak publicly on the issue, although he may be in a better position to confront the allegations after receiving a full brief from the integrity unit yesterday. The Samoan international now has five business days to respond to the claims, meaning the deadline for his response will be only hours before the club open their season against South Sydney at ANZ Stadium on Friday night.

Simona is highly unlikely to play in that game even if he manages to clear his name, although taking to the football field is probably the last thing on his mind at the moment given the fight he is facing to save his career.

The club was in the throes of offloading him to alleviate salary cap pressure, but those talks have now been put on hold given he is facing a life ban from the sport if the latest allegations prove correct. The club has been forced to seek special dispensation from the NRL given the salary cap pressure they were facing threatened to stop them playing either Jamal Idris or Elijah Taylor against the Rabbitohs next week.

As it is, the NRL has given the club an exemption to make their entire squad available, although they have reserved the right to review the club’s cap position once the Simona situation has been resolved. The lead-up to that game was expected to be dominated by the appearance of former Tigers captain Robbie Farah against his former club. However, Simona has taken some of the heat out of the situation by dominating the news over the past week, allowing Farah and his Souths teammates to prepare in relative peace.

It is understood the integrity unit investigated other allegations raised against Simona but subsequently decided to focus on the claims of gambling on matches, prohibited under NRL rules.

NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg has been vocal in his stance on gambling, insisting the code will take a hardline stance against any players who transgress the rules.

His determination is strengthened by the fact players no longer have any excuses — the code has never done more to educate its players on the perils of gambling or warn them of the sanctions they face for violating the rules.

I feel for the team and the guys that try 100% every week.
I feel for the fans the cheer and travel to games every week.
It's a massive breach of trust. I'm honestly just disgusted.
The whole 2016 was thrown away for a few bets It's safe to say.
We had plenty of close games where his edge defence failed.
Only has to be one game affected and finals was done for us.

He should not be allowed to play again, anywhere.
Match fixers shouldn't prosper.

This. Unequivocally.

"amid claims he used an associate’s account to back opposition players to score tries against him in matches last season." They are very serious claims and if proved correct the club has no alternative but to say Sayonara Simona." Also if the club is still having cap problems then players such as Lovett must be on shaky ground.

So we were in a situation where we can't play Taylor or Idris - and no guarantee about our cap situation in the near future.
Great management by the club one week out from the start of the season.

This is truly scary, and can't be blamed on Mayer and the previous management. The current management knew the position when they were offering players contracts. If Simona is not deregistered, good luck offloading players at anywhere near market value. Other clubs will be circling knowing how much trouble we are in, and will be waiting to pick off the prime cuts for next to nothing. Worst case scenario is that this could cost us 2-3 players including a couple of highly rated youngsters.
