Time for tears is over as Tedesco focuses on long road to recovery
April 5, 2012

TEARS staining his cheeks, James Tedesco did not want his parents to walk into the Leichhardt Oval change rooms because he knew they would be even more upset than him.

The rookie fullback's season had just ended after less than 30 minutes of his first NRL game. Like the Tigers' 2012 campaign, it had begun with so much promise and anticipation, but quickly fell apart.

A month has passed since that match against Cronulla and Tedesco, considered one of the hottest young prospects in the game, is looking on the bright side and towards next year. Yet that sauna of an afternoon in Sydney's inner west, in front of more than 19,000 spectators, will stay with the 19-year-old for a long time.

"It was a day of highs and lows," Tedesco told the Herald in his first interview since the injury. "The first 15 minutes I was feeling comfortable out there making my debut. I thought I was going well.

"I had a lot of family there watching me. I was very excited about it but it all came crashing down. I still enjoyed it and I've still got plenty of time for next year. How it ended was very disappointing but what can you do?"

How it ended was like this: Tedesco was told in the Tigers sheds beneath the "Latchem" Robinson stand that he had damaged the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee. The ACL: the most dreaded acronym in rugby league. It is, for a footballer, like an investment banker hearing the term GFC.

Prior to that, everything about Tedesco's long-awaited debut had been right: the excitement about his first senior appearance had been building all day and a bumper crowd of 19,762 turned up to watch the Tigers at their spiritual home.

"When I stepped off my foot, I heard something pop in my knee and I knew straight away it was something serious," he said. "As I was getting stretchered off, I felt like it wasn't too bad, but when the doctor felt it and worked on it a bit, he said 'Yeah, ACL, it's the season'. I was pretty upset hearing that. When all the boys came in and asked what was it, and how long, it was pretty hard telling them all. I got a bit emotional."

His parents, John and Rosemary, were seated in the grandstand above but he had reservations about seeing them immediately because he knew they would be in tears, too.

"My mum and dad were probably more upset than I was. I'm just trying to stay positive and not think about it too much," he said. "Of course I was upset at the time, but I'm trying to move on and get ready for next year.

"I didn't really want to see them and talk to them because I knew they'd be just as upset as me. Mum has been pretty upset but always trying to look after me. She's been home the last two weeks after my surgery looking after me."

Home is the acreage in Menangle where Tedesco grew up and where his father built a custom-made football oval, including goal posts made of PVC piping.

Tedesco is yet to begin the long road back to fitness under the instruction of Wests Tigers rehabilitation manager Andrew Leeds and is using the time away from football to increase his subject load at the Australian Catholic University at Strathfield, where he is studying to be a physical education teacher.

As is the case with all clubs, Tedesco is not alone in having had a serious injury and says the past pain of others has proved helpful.

"As soon as I did it, that night and the day after all the boys were messaging me and telling me to keep my head up and stay strong," he said. "Robbie Farah, he's been talking to me a bit. He did his knee when he was young like me, too, along with Tim Moltzen. He did his knee a few years ago. They've both come back bigger and stronger."

Tedesco is itching to get back to Concord Oval. By then, he hopes, the Tigers will also be back on track.

These things happen for a reason. Reason being he'll come back bigger and even better. Wish him all the best.

Really good story Great to see James has set himself up for life after a footy also with his PE studies Not that he will be needing those skills for a while He has another 12-15 years in Black,White and Gold where he will establish himself as a champion Tiger Keep your chin up James 2013 will be here before you know it

Good to see his parents are heavily involved in his recovery They sound like good parents

Good story the signs are there for a healthy return in 2013 with the senior players and the club not to mention his family looking after him after what would have been devastating for him.

Having had the exact same injury as james he has a long road ahead of him, getting over the injury mentally is nearly as hard as the physical rehab, but I have no doubt he'll come back bigger, better and even hungrier. Can't wait to see him back on the park in 2013

Robbie had the same thing happen at about the same age and it hasn't held Robbie back. Even Moltzen looks to have his pace back now. The worst injury there is. Anyone who has ever played sport can attest. Having done a few knees (snapped patellas and the like) the first thing you ask the doc is `is it ACL' in the hope you are told it is anything but an ACL. Can only imagine being told that at 19\. He was looking very very good as well.

No Tedesco and no Lui is a massive hole in the 2012 side from the one we would have expected to field in October 2011.

I watched this kid in both trial games this year and he really is going to be something very special. Little wonder he started the year in FG.

Can't wait to see him back in 2013.

….and hopefully if it takes him a while to get his rythm and confidence back he doesn't cop the same bagging as Moltzen.

Good to get a read of this today. A shame it happened in the first place but what's happened has happened and as everyone knows, it's how you respond to the set back which matters. If he works hard, stays determined and positive, he'll be sweet

Oh ck, please. Moltzen was timid even before his knee injury.

Each to their own opinion on Moltzen , hybrid ( didn't look too timid last week by the way  )
All I'm saying is that people should give Tedesco a little time to regain his confidence when he does come back - and not bag him if he doesn't set the world on fire immediately.

It was gut wrenching to see James go down the way he did,I was almost in tears myself when it happened.
He is still growing and getting stronger so on the positive side it is better this happened now than in later.
James showed great determination to get there, so I will bet anything he will show the same determination to fight his way back to become a better and stronger Tiger in 2013.

keep positive James.
we as fans are positive you will return with vengenance, and show all how good a player you are and will continue to be.

He should get a full pre season in, which will do a lot for confidence come 2013.

All the best to the young fella
