9\. Tigers (11): Tigers management got into trouble a few years back when the players had too much say in the running of the club. The culling of several established first-graders was perceived as disrespectful by the team but honestly, is there an ex-Tigers player running around that the club desperately misses now that all these youngsters have been blooded and the results are starting to come like last Sunday's astonishing 46-18 flogging of Canterbury. Who should they have kept - Blake Ayshford, Bryce Gibbs, Benji Marshall, Chris Heighington. The only former Tiger you could say should have been retained would be Andrew Fifita. The club should make the right decisions, not the popular ones, so the re-signing of supercoach Potter should be done even if he's not as popular as the players' choice of someone who was a teammate or junior coach to many of them, Todd Payten.

I felt at the time he was let go that he wasn't living up to his potential and as such wasn't all that miffed that we let him go. He certainly did perform under a different mentor though and with hindsight always being 20/20 it would have been nice if we held onto him for him to play under our current structure.

We're doing pretty well though if there's only one player out of the batch that have been let go over the last three to four years that has gone on to better things. While it doesn't speak much for past recruitment, it does say alot for where we are headed.

I said it in another thread - putting Payten in as coach would bring back the boys club mentality which saw us struggle for nearly a decade. Maybe that unnamed player who gave the quote to RLW was part of the old clique and doesn't like the new culture.

It took Potter 12 months and a whole lotta balls to get us back on the right path.

Totally agree Alex…but given the Clubs reported financial position and Potter being the lowest paid coach in the comp ...if he's not extended i see no other option but to appoint from within meaning Payten or Kidwell steps in...

Seems like only one coach has been able to consistently get the best out of Fifita

I spose a lot will have to do with the contents of Brian Smith's review…I think Payten has the makings of a good coach but feel he needs more time as an assistant before taking a head coaching position...

I don't think Matt Parish is the answer either..

There is no debate. I wouldn't swap any of our current props for fafita as he doesn't run straight.

CEO seems to be making right calls and players seem to be responding to Potter. He hasn't had any easy task this year with injuries, some under performing senior players and key players out over origin. By we seem to have navigated this and could now string a few wins together with some luck with injuries.

I wouldn't be surprised if parts of Smiths report have been blown out of proportion by media to grab a headline.

When club starts going backwards and players are responding time for a new coach then. Better the devil you know. The club needs stability on and off the field for a few years.

I hope Matt Parish never step onto any Tigers field in any coaching capacity. I have heard from many player were he has been an assistant that he is a drop kick of the highest order (putting it very nicely). I doubt he will ever coach first grade at NRL level.

To answer the original poster, I can't think of a single player we let go that I would still want. Maybe Fafita but apart from one good year he has been pretty ordinary at the Sharks. I hear we decided to keep Woods over Fafita and I think we made the right choice.

i didnt at the time, and still dont have any issue with the club releasing fifita whatsoever. australian rep, whatever, he had a shocking attitude at the time. good on him for changing that and doing well, but his not being at the tigers doesnt upset me in the slightest - they have a great pack now anyway - and i think lodge will cover for him next season.

If Potter gets the arse, they will give it to Payten. Unless we pitch for another untested rookie who will accept minimum dollar, we won't be able to afford to put on a seasoned coach.

I must say I will have a laugh if Potter tests his value and ends up giving the club the shaft before they get the chance to do it to him. I reckon St. George, Newcastle & maybe even the Titans might have a bite at him.
